As a physical media guy I'm also pissed there was no 4K box set💀

Damn! I remember the 50th anniversary of Bond! It's spooky how time flies!
Another superb video Calvin. I am as old as Bond, so like you it’s a massive part of life. Absolutely love these videos. Have the best new year ever Calvin.
Thanks so much, Dale. You're very kind and I hope you have a wonderful new year ahead!
Geez settle down tiger
I think the Sound of 007 Concert was the stand out highlight for me. It has kind of always been a dream of mine to see the Bond themes performed by the original artists live in one event (it would be absolutely epic) and this is may be as close as we’ll ever get, seeing Dame Shirley Bassey, Lulu and Garbage on stage was amazing. David Arnold is an absolute legend, I thought it was a fantastic evening 👌
I wasn't there live because I live in the US but I saw it on UA-cam. And this concert made me a fan of Ella Eyre. She did a good job with her performance of "Licence To Kill". I was wondering why Gladys Knight couldn't perform that song. I found out later that she is in the middle of a world tour and Gladys had a concert in The Royal Albert Hall in June this same year.
Became a Bond fan this year, actually! Had only seen the first couple of Connery films as a kid (loved them), played Goldeneye 64 a little, and watched CR and QoS when they came out. Out of the blue I thought, "why don't I watch all the Bond films?" It was providence that Amazon put them all on Prime as I was starting the Moore films. After watching them all, I found your channel and became an ever bigger fan! Even the "bad Bonds" are at least entertaining; the music, stunts, camerawork, actors, so great.
I also love how because the EON films were sort of chasing trends in what was popular for filmgoers, the series acts as a sort of encapsulation of cultural and filmmaking tastes of the times. Dalton's probably my favorite Bond and OHMSS might be my no. 1 Bond film.
Thank you so much for the content and insight into the series, Calvin! Happy 60th Mr. Bond!
I really wish we had gotten literally any of those theatrical re-releases here in the US. Maybe Bond's popularity isn't big enough here these days to warrant every film being rereleased, but come on they could have done like the top 5 most popular ones (a great lineup would have been Dr. No, Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldeneye, Casino Royale)
They did a deal with Vue in the UK which isn't based in the USA. But as you say it's a shame they couldn't do some 'one off' USA screenings.
We did get the showing of Dr. No via Fathom Events. But given that the quality of Fathom's screenings has been mixed (just Google how badly they handled John Carpenter's The Thing earlier in 2022, to the point I believe Carpenter himself weighed in with criticism), a lot of Bond fan sites were telling people to avoid it. I will say, living in my states largest city, we didn't have a cinema here showing it AT ALL and I couldn't bring myself to drive the better of the film's running time and a hundred miles to go see it knowing the quality might not be that good.
Nice video. Happy New Year to you. Yeah, the 60th… what an utter letdown. I agree, a 25th anniversary release of Goldeneye 64, and a 4K boxset of the Bond films would have been enough. And the worst thing is they are both already ready for release! I saw a few of the 4K masters on the big screen, I even streamed Goldeneye on Apple TV and it was light and day compared to the BD. The sound of 007 was disappointing, the Sherwood novel is pointless and dull (thank heavens for Double or Nothing)
Thanks for confirming this about the 4K's, spaceodds and a happy New Year to you too! I wasn't sure if it was just experiencing the films in the cinema that was skewing my perception but when I sampled the 4K on Amazon of LTK it looked different to the transfer I saw on the big screen... The colours just weren't as vibrant and the audio mix I heard in the cinema for GoldenEye was different to what is on Amazon.
@@calvindyson Thanks Calvin. I forgot to add that I wish you all the very best and happiness for the up coming year. My word do we all need it. In regards to streaming the 4K’s, I could be wrong, but streaming it via Apple (through a separate streaming device that plays back 4K HDR) is the best way to take advantage of the 4K master. The colours are more vibrant and even the cuts are different. I am holding out for the 4K discs but I am tempted to check out LTK. I bought Goldeneye years ago on an expiring voucher, and the film was then upgraded when the 4K’s were released.
That moment at 7:38....the look of sullen acceptance that one is in too deep into a fandom...
What a great recap of the year!
You're more optimistic than I am, that's for sure. If the expected release of a new movie is 4+ years away as described, we will have had just 3 movies come out in a 15 year period which is insanely risky. Looks like we're heading towards another "will the franchise survive?" crossroads which is really putting pressure on the new actor to hit it out of the park.
Can’t wait to watch this, Calvin. Thank you for another superb year of hilarious, thoughtful and top-notch Bond content.
I envy you guys in the UK getting a chance to see all of the 007 films over there in the theater. Here in the states, Fathom events screened "Dr. No" for the 60th anniversary and I had a blast seeing it on the big screen for the first time. I'm hoping they keep doing that and "From Russia with Love gets it's 60th anniversary screening, etc.
I feel you. I live in the US and I too watched Dr. No 60th Anniversary screening as well. I wish I can contact with Fathom because I do want to watch both From Russia With Love and Octopussy in the big screen this year
Well I live in the UK and have never seen any 007 screenings (that isn't a brand new film) in any cinemas near me.
Maybe he sees a lot of them because he lives in London? I'm just a handful of hours away from London though.
I just emailed Fathom Events and asked them if they going to show both From Russia With Love and Octopussy here in the US. I hope I get a reply soon
@@greatwuta Let me know, please.
@@les4767 I sure will. Also too bad we don't live in Portland Oregon because on this month some movie theater there showed OHMSS, FRWL, Licence To Kill and Goldeneye.
Fab overview of the year, Calvin. This was the year I properly got into Bond as I’d say I was more of a casual fan in previous years. Attended a few screenings which I very much enjoyed. Here’s to 2023!
Aww, I'm sorry my wife and I didn't have a chance to treat you to martinis when you visited L.A.! We also loved the Petersen Automotive Museum exhibit.
Hopefully I'll be back again soon! Was only there for a couple of days and there's so much more I'd like to see :D
Just guest hosted on a James Bond podcast yesterday and your reviews really added to my contribution. I plugged your UA-cam channel for that very reason, great stuff! All the best for 2023.
I remember the 30th anniversary and I had the tape of the 30th anniversary of Bond music. Played it repeatedly on my "Walkman"
The personal highlight of this anniversary year was undoubtedly seeing the final Q the Music concert and meeting you and many other wonderful fellow fans. Absolutely brilliant.
And while we haven’t had any screening of a Bond film over here in Belgium, we do have a new Bond in Motion exhibition which is spectacular to see… Can’t complain much, really!
That's why I wanted to be James Bond for Halloween this year. I hope you enjoyed 2022, Calvin. It was definitely a better year than the past 2 years for me. Have a healthy 2023.
Here in the states there has been...nothing. And my friends think the series is over because James Bond is dead. I DID see Duran Duran perform AVTAK at Madison Square Garden though.
I'm quite jealous that the UK got all 25 Bond films rereleased in 2022, but I got my moments to celebrate the 60th anniversary: I got to watch Dr. No at a local cinema and my wife and I went to Piz Gloria while we were in Switzerland on our honeymoon.
007 concert was my highlight for sure! Got a ticket from a friend 2 days before and flew in from Germany just for one night. Don't regret it, as seeing Shirley Bassey live was unbelievable!
The biggest highlight of the year was this channel. Keep up the good work!
I spent my 60th rewatching the Bond films, discovering new love for films I used to not enjoy much, gaining an even bigger love for Bond as a whole, and getting my little brother into the movies as well. I fully played From Russia With Love for my first time and it quickly jumped to the top of my Bond game list, and I’m somewhat patiently awaiting Goldeneye as well… somewhat patient.
It was a neat year for me but I wish we had some cool Bond re-showings out here, would’ve loved to have seen From Russia with love or Thunderball on the big screen as they’re my top two. I definitely enjoyed the reviews and videos you put out this year especially the License to Kill and Goldeneye reviews, they we’re just great! Thanks Calvin
Happy 60 years everyone, let’s hope the next 60 are just as good.
The 60th anniversary of the Bond film series was interesting for me because... it was actually the year I got into James Bond and watched all 25 EON movies, starting in late September and going all the way to December, since I waited until my friends were ready to watch the last 5 movies with them (the Daniel Craig ones).
Thank you Nintendo for that GoldenEye 007 announcement, because that was the thing that finally made me check out this series, and while I'm still pretty new, I'm looking forward to other Bond things that will happen in the future, and patiently waiting for GoldenEye 007 to get to NSO, haha.
I’m pretty sure I lost 20 years of my life as I listened to Calvin describe how incredible the anniversary screenings were 😂. So jealous. Did not have that here in the US!
2022 and the 60th anniversary of James Bond wouldn't have been possible without you and the weekly James Bond Content which I have enjoyed every single minute of it and here's to even more in 2023 Calvin 💛💙💛💙,Lord Colton Of Gallifrey
Happy New Year, Calvin! I am worried that they have not started the search for the new James Bond yet. That means a new James Bond film is years away.
For me, two major 007 highlights this year was the DR. NO special event screening we got in the US (had lots of fun, an older gentleman showed up to the screening in Connery-esque tux and I thought to myself “that guy is living the dream”) and LEGO releasing another Aston Martin DB5, but this time it was more affordable ($2O USD) and it had a little LEGO Daniel Craig Bond.
Just for those, I can say I had a good year in Bond.
You've had your Six Decades. Happy Anniversary. Im from Australia. That Albert hall concert sounded amazing. Particularly seeing Dame Shirley Bassey belt out a few Bond standards. As always keep up the good work.
Well the 4K masters were done back in 2002 which the later dvd and blu rays were mastered from that’s 20 years old technology like you said maybe they redoing the 4K masters so you get the best possible quality
They have done a major rework. Goldeneye on BD and the 4K I saw on the big screen and streamed is night and day.
Great video Calvin! Really hoped we would see the release of remastered and expanded 'The Man With The Golden Gun' and 'Moonraker' Barry scores this year.
Happy 2023 Calvin ! This year will also mark the tenth anniversary of me bumping into your review of Die Another Day and thinking, within a mere few seconds and you shouting "Christ!" while dodging the gunbarrel's CGI bullet, that you were the most hilarious reviewer I had seen in a while :) ten years later and it's been fantastic seeing you evolve from a Timothy Dalton-hating Northerner to the very articulate, always positive beacon of Bond fandom that you are today! Cheers mate, and on to ten more years of quality content! (Surely a new Bond film will actually be released by then... right?)
Thanks for all your videos this year, Calvin, it's been a blast and looking forward to more in 2023.
Try being a young fan during the 30th anniversary! Double CD and an ITV special was your lot. A new film on an anniversary year isn’t the be all and end all but some 4K discs and some more expanded soundtracks is a good shout. They’ve dropped the ball there
Great video. As an Xbox owner my big celebration moment was definitely finding out that Goldeneye r s coming to Xbox next year so I'm looking forward to playing it for the first time. Have a good new year Calvin
Happy New Year Calvin! I’ve gone to see a fair few of the Bond films at the cinema and was capped off by going to see Skyfall at the Royal Albert Hall in front of the Royal Philharmonic orchestra, all great. Just really wish like you said the 4K box set had been released.
Happy New Years Calvin, you made the 60th anniversary a lot of fun with some cool videos, it was cool to see you review my favorite James Bond movie (Goldeneye). Can’t wait to see what you do next year.
Great video as always Calvin and happy new year. Started watching you during the 50th anniversary. I was 13 and in middle school! Now in university. Time flies
The 60th anniversary year was abysmal here in Canada. We got absolutely no theatrical screenings of any of the films nor any kind of physical event celebrating the series.
Damn. And I thought no one cared here in the US haha.
@@spencerkindra8822 It was depressing. Save for my very early in the year viewing of NTTD, I didn't out any of the films on. I was really dejected about seeing so many people watch these on a big screen while I couldn't.
@@thezachmarsh Bummer. At least they did screenings of the films in major US cities. The Bond franchise sadly doesn't get as much love in North America as did does in the UK. Plus unlike the US, Bond has never even been to Canada so TRULY no one cared about the 60th anniversary up there.
I feel like after Cubby died the franchise has survived in spite of Barbara & Michael. The series could really be so much more.
As a 90s kid I loved seeing all the Brosnan films in the cinema last year 😍🍿
Ireland had all of them. I was delighted to see GoldenEye, Skyfall, Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me and The World Is Not Enough on the big screen for the very first time.
Happy New Year Calvin! Thanks for all your great videos in 2022.
From Russia With Love (my favorite) came out in 1963, I was born that year so I am turning 60. I would love to see it on the big screen as an anniversary release.
All the best Mr Dyson, thanks for keeping us all entertained with your videos, hope you have a fantastic new year!!
What's that for Calvin
I thought if it was not for the bond community there was not much celebration for the 60th anniversary
I must say, I have found solace in a lot of Bond community content and events. The Q the Music show was another highlight of my Bond year.
Completely agree
Happy new year, Calvin! I hope you have a fantastic holiday and a great year. Unfortunately in America nothing happened to celebrate it. I'm jealous, my first big screen experience was TSWLM. I would have loved to see the first 9, especially DAF, my all time favorite, in the theatre. So basically I experienced nothing to celebrate the anniversary. I hope they cast the new Bond soon. NTTD left such a horrible taste in my mouth I'm anxious to get on with it and see what 26 will bring.
I suspect the reason why they didn’t release an anniversary DVD collection is because (a) the marketing is focused more on streaming packages and (b) they may be running out of ideas for new supplementary materials - commentaries, documentary specials and (c) prices to charge for the new releases. There’s also the question of whether the older releases would benefit from 4K resolution, given the age and current condition of the original masters.
I still remember the 20th and 25th anniversaries of 007...I must be old! I was just happy to get the expanded Tomorrow Never Dies soundtrack this year, which helped to wash out some of the bad taste of the diabolical mess that was No Time To Die.
I am still gutted for the 50th they didn't get all the Bond actors on stage together (or at least the ones who would have been up for it )
Connery didn't want to get involved [and it's likely his health was in decline by then] but the rest seemed up for it so I don't know why it didn't happen [as it did happen without Sean for the 40th anniversary].
A film every five or six years. A dead Bond and some no body taking the 007. Can we have some real kick ass James Bond fun again and more often.
Happy New Year calvin. Thanks for the laughs this year.
Yes I was expecting a 4k HD Box set I guess the cinema releases were a good alternative. Also surprised that they haven't announced anything to re the next Bond I guess we will get that next year. Happy New Year Calvin.
The Highs, while Goldeneye is hanging in limbo, there has been a lot of work done in the modding community. I big patch came out for Tomorrow Never Dies 64, and for the 55th Anniversary of The Spy Who Loved Me, the mod of the same name was able to showcase the Liparus. Crazy how well it all runs on consoles.
The Lows: I would always say "Goldeneye HD will be released the same day as Half Life 3" as such I didn't keep my hopes high. However the announcement did get me excited with no pay off. Oh well, still amazing the franchise is still going after all this time.
Rereleasing all the films in theaters is such a cool idea.
4K disc versions of the films are coming in 2023. The problems with the Blu-Ray releases are being corrected for the new 4K versions and will come out next year.
We should have got a 4K Blu-ray set… that is what I was look forward to the most. Also really sucks for us in the US we couldn’t see the films in theaters.
For comparison, to celebrate the show's 60th Anniversary next year us Doctor Who fans are getting THREE FEATURE LENGTH SPECIALS.
Was happy that No Time To Die came out in 2021 rather than 2022. Am also glad they haven’t announced a new James Bond in a rush. But I also really want and was hoping for a 4K Blu-ray set with all 25 films this year.
Yeah… America kinda got shafted in this. We got Dr. No in theaters in August, but that was really it. Unless you count really expensive merchandise; I feel the brand is trying to just be a clothing brand 😂
In Australia the British Film Festival screened 14 of the 25 (Dr No to OHMSS, Live & Let Die, Golden Gun, both the Dalton's, Goldeneye, TWINE, Casino Royale and Skyfall. Wish there'd been more, but the much later NTTD release here did allow for a 2022 screening at least.
Both the novels are worth a read. Anthony Horowitz's is another quality outing with a rather ambiguous ending. It was a great read but I still prefer Forever and a Day.
We also had the WA Symphony Orchestra play the score accompanying Casino Royale (they do Skyfall this Feb) and they also did a show called Music of James Bond with special guest George Lazenby. It was a magnificent show and George was his usual self but sadly George being George offended some in attendance and it left a bit of a sour taste post concert, that said the performances were outstanding.
Overall in Australia the 60th probably had a bit more going on than the 40th or 50th anniversaries.
Pure speculation here on the lack of a 4K set BUT I can't help wondering if that lawsuit about the '67 Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again not being in the "Complete" Blu-Ray set might have something to do with it. After all, Eon have held them at arm's length to a large extent, seeing to it that they got separate releases in physical media and not being seen as part of the "official" list of films. (To the point, I hasten to add, that if you go to the James Bond listing on a Roku streaming device, those two films are nowhere in sight.) Now that they're perhaps legally obligated to do so in any form of complete physical set in future, I wonder if they're looking at declining physical media sales and Amazon pushing for things to be streaming only, and going "You know what? This isn't a fight worth having anymore."
Mind you, I JUST bought the Blu-Ray set due to the lack of a 4K release and getting tired of the films inconsistently being streaming, plus my DVD sets from 2002-3 have been well-loved and are showing their age from multiple viewings and on modern screens.
Calvin at the Bond museum display in his shorts looking like Dennis the Menace. 😆
I wanted to see more but couldn't due to work but finally seeing my favourite Bind film, Live and Let Die, in the cinema was great! I also rewatched Casino Royale there too
There are two things I really love - the James Bond films and the Doctor Who TV series. Bond movies started in 1962, the Doctor Who series in 1963. James Bond changed actors five times (so far) and Doctor Who changed actors 13 times and soon to be 14 times. Both had times where there were no movies or TV shows at all, and both came back. I know this is a James Bond site and I loved Bond ever since I was a little kid, I just find these comparisons very interesting. Anyway, long live Bond! (and The Doctor). And Happy New Year!
I had all on dvd in metal briefcase, gave them my son and bought the 50th box set on blu ray, I WANT ALL IN 4K TOO
Until the last month or so, I have been out of the loop on Bond this year. Did not know GoldenEye was coming back and now I'm really excited.
there is a pc version of the golden eye called 1964 gepd. its mouse control plays like a shooter and its honestly the best way to play it.
Thanks for the James Bond videos this year, happy New Year.
In the same boat with the 4K boxset...I can't quite comprehend why it didn't get released? Every film is ready, was shown on cinemas in 4K, released digitally in 4K and even The Sound of 007 Doc showed clips from the films in 4K!
My worry now is they'll do a boxset before the next film with a space for that to be added, which then makes the OCD go off the chain whereas a 60th Anniversary one could have been locked in contextually with all the films from all six Bonds!
The Celebratory Thing for me was seeing No Time To Die at the BFI IMAX, in 3D. Although I know the format has decreased in popularity (although maybe that's changing with Avatar 2), I'm a fan of it, and it was really special to see the film but with added solidness. It honestly was like a Bond movie world was there for real!
What made it extra special was that this was the first (and so far only) time it's being screened in the UK. And no sign of a 3D Blu Ray release. I'd heard that America and other markets had had the 3D cinema release back in Sept 2021, and it made me very jealous. So I was over the moon when I heard that the BFI would be playing it as part of the 60th Anniversary Celebrations.
The cinema was also seated to full capacity and that made it wonderful too, experiencing with an amphitheater of Bond fans.
What hurts is that fans of the Bond franchise outside the UK can't experience much of the franchise :( but I guess in countries like mine (México) Bond is not very popular these days...
Well, idk about that, but this was my personal best year with what might be my favorite film series. Why? Because this was the year I finished my first Bondathon! I managed to watch many of the Bond films for the first time (I had gotten the complete blu-ray set last Christmas). I also finally went back and bought Blood Stone, and now it’s probably my favorite ‘go to’ game. Finally, my 31st b-day this year was Bond themed; me and my friends played casino games, pool, I made drinks from the Bond drink book, and I made (well, forced) my friends to watch You Only Live Twice… because that movie is WACKY! But yes, my best Bond year lol.
Happy new year Calvin. I was surprised the Bonds didn't get a 4k release well. Particularly when watching the Bond remastered documentary Lowry said that it has already been scanned to 4k level and that was back in 2008!
Like you I saw a few of the Bonds in the cinema and enjoyed it.
I hoped we would hear more on the game being developed too.
Speaking of games, you may not have an xbox, but if you have a relatively decent specc'd laptop or PC, you can get XBox game pass to play the remastered Goldeneye game when it eventually releases to compliment the Switch release.
does anyone know the exact time when Calvin abandoned his clip on bow tie and opted for the open neck shirt? It seems to be something which has happened without any fanfare. Or did Calvin ever have one on? Is Calvin's bow tie simply a false memory, residing in my memory banks along with Dolly and her braces?
I loved the Sound of 007 doc, but sadly my local cinema did one weekend of screenings at the beginning but they didn't make money to have it around. I know games take a lifetime to make, but would've thought we might've heard more news about Project 007 like maybe a cast announcement
I got to see OHMSS, LTK and TND at the PCC.
"...60th anniversary..." This year would in fact be the (true) SEVENTIETH anniversary of Bond, James Bond 📖
It is such a shame that the 007/Bond series had not been re-released in the cinemas outside of the UK (I for one would have gone to see "Spy" and Moonraker, even though I own the DVD of both and even have a medium-to-large tv monitor) 📀
I'm pretty sure they films were mastered in 4K for the bluray set...so they just need to put that on disc. I feel your frustration.
Companies are trying to avoid releasing physical media. If they keep it all on streaming they have the ability to edit and remove any scenes they wish. Anything that might be “problematic”.
Happy New Years Calvin. Maybe you can celebrate by re-watching OK Connery and chugging a bottle of vodka!
Gonna say it for the sake of worldliness, but I think 2022 was the best year for the Predator franchise. Prey came out, as well as the Predator literary collection ‘Eyes of the Demon’, and the Predator starred in a Death Battle against Boba Fett. Good on ‘ya!… you scary, scary space monster. 😧
Happy New Year to you & thanks for all the content in 2022 👍👍👍
I actually bought that new jigsaw set for my mom since her and I are big bond fans, got her the poster version last year
Nothing beats physical media.
I agree with some of the comments here. The series overall is in bad shape. The Daniel Craig era I believe will be looked back on as a failure. Think about it. 2 of his 5 movies not well received by critics or audiences. And his final one very divisive. None of them were classic Bond in the sense he receives his mission, his gadgets, and then goes. You just didn’t get a sense he enjoyed being Bond.
The producers need to take notes from Mission Impossible to see how to make modern day spy action movies that are fun and exciting
They actually tried to get Christopher MacQuarrie, director of all from Rogue Nation onwards to direct No Time To Die.
Calvin talking about a Nintendo Direct is NOT something I expected to ever see but is a fun way to end 2022
Was really hoping for rereleases in the US. Missed opportunity as there are many many classic films being shown all the time.
4:57
I think even after the apocalypse has happened, ITV will still be showing those movies lol
I really found your views very facinating, Calvin. There is just something about having physical media, especially in a complete (As can be) set of a film series. The steelbooks were really nice at the time but I agree, I don't like double dipping on existing releases unless they are in a sale, etc. I do feel the 4K opportunity was very missed by the marketers. It is strange that there is no current complete set of the films by now.
Give it a few years and maybe the 65th Anniversary will hold some answers. 😋
One Great thing we did get this year from the 60th anniversary was your Goldeneye review man :)
By the way I was at the Bradford (I called the place Leeds in my teens :( ) Muesum too in 2002. Such Magical memories !!! We're you aware that Pierce Brosnan actually opened up that Muesum back in 1999 after his final day on 'The world is not enough' ?? check out the article when you can.
Please check out youtuber 'the libary ladder' videos on Ian Fleming Books as its the best review on YT about them. Plus theres youtubers 'Secret Galaxy' review on the james bond jr cartoon. And finaly a guy called 'Lampoonery' has been making really funny Bond videos of all the actors in one room and going through various comedy scenrio's and so on, you'll love them :) sorry if you already knew of all these videos!!!
Have a great new year celebration man, only less than 12 hours to go and thanks for all your hard work and passion :)
Proud to say I still have a working PS2 console where I can play my favourite Bond game Everything or Nothing. None of this subscription shit or waiting for hours for games to upload or upgrade.
Isn't it James Bond 0070th anniversary starting April 13th 2023? For the character originally created from the books I mean.
Happy New Year Calvin! It turns out you can get a virus on a Mac then. i thought they were like the computers in GoldenEye, impenetrable. P.S. my pick for the next Bond is Thomas Doherty. he is only 27 and is from, Scotland.
Still angry they did not release all movies on 4k UHD
Still hope for 2023
Great vid Calvin.👍 For me, it feels a bit like 'tail between the legs' time, as the producers hide away after the shameful (in my opinion) Daniel Craig films, especially that final outing - what were they thinking?!😵💫 Cheers, Simon.😏
I am not as much in touch with the James Bond franchise as you, Calvin, and I honestly didn't realize this was an anniversary year till last week or so, when I remembered that Dr. No was published in 1962. Nonetheless, this year I treated myself to the On Her Majesty's Secret Service novel. Great read, in parts better than the movie, especially the ending. I wish everbody a great 2023!
Not a fan of the book, never liked Tracy's characterization in the book (she's constantly crying, hysterical, neurotic, heavy burden, she's a bit too much for my liking), one of my least favorite Fleming/literary Bond Girl, but in the film, she's easily my favorite.
It's just a boring read (it's full of expositions), a letdown after Thunderball, which is great.
You Only Live Twice was even better than it because of Kissy Suzuki being a breathe of fresh air after the Weepy almost depressing Tracy of the previous novel, Kissy Suzuki was a normal Bond Girl who had a lot of agency, and Blofeld was threatening and scary in YOLT again, in OHMSS, he's boring, there's nothing menacing about him, and his plan was also laughable it's ridiculous.
It's a shame, OHMSS (the book) I know could have been much more better, but it's sandwiched between two good Bond novels (TB & YOLT), especially Tracy, she's sandwiched between two great Bond Girls, it's a shame, heck even Mary Goodnight and Vivienne had a lot more agency and personality than Tracy, she's just easily one of Fleming's weakest heroine.
@@jammontgomery2320 You make me interested in reading Thunderball and You Only Live Twice. Thank you! :-)
I enjoy Bond but I don't think I'd be called a "fan" and I didn't even notice that it was the 60th anniversary, which tells you how little effort they actually put into it.
I'm afraid the new reality is that we have to wait 4-6 years for every Bond movie. The good old days are gone forever. I mean, when a new movie was released every 2 years. And what a great year 1983 was! "Octopussy" & "NSNA"! Thanks to Connery, NSNA was a pretty good movie! But now... I feel a lack of ideas on the part of the producers, boredom, hopelessness... They led James Bond to a dead end: they killed him! My God, Michael Wilson looked so old and tired. He must be really fed up. But maybe it is time to end the whole story? My last wish: PLEASE RELEASE FINALLY A 4K JAMES BOND(#1-#25) MOVIE COLLECTION!!!
