Thanks for this, it is so helpful! Now, I might be getting overly ambitious, but is it possible to put more than one stopwatch in a sheet by basically duplicating this code in with a different A1? Also, I would love to change the color of the "button" in addition to the start/stop as another visual reminder. I hope I can figure out how to do that without messing up the lovely creation you helped me make so far! You've inspired me.
Thank you for creating this video!! My dad has asked me to help him with his small business and I needed a free way to conveniently and accurately keep track of my hours. I've never used Apps Script, but it was so easy to follow along your instructions. I also like how you included your thinking process (and even mistakes!) in your final edit for this video -- it's very relatable and gives me hope that I can improve at my Google Sheets skills! This is one of the most helpful videos out there!
Glad it helped!
Where can we find written instructions for this? You go so fact I can't even tell what you clicked and can't possibly keep up to try and follow the video! Thanks!
Transcripts available here and on better sheets. Also the sheets are available for download for Better Sheets members.
@@BetterSheets thank you
Nice! Also, is it possible to have the stopwatch run as a stopwatch on a phone (with decimals)?
Not in a live update kind of way. Maybe each minute can. With iterative calculations
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed.
Fantastic!
Does this only work with Workspace account?
as long as you have google sheets... you can do it. in Apps Script. Every sheet has Apps Script. go to the menu: Extensions > Apps Script
It won’t save and gives me an error message sayin var is an unexpected token on line 14.
where are you running the script from?
sorry can you help me
When chescbox is enabled, the formula should stop working
Try going through the whole video
that's really awesome
You are awesome!
Man, please slow down when you do your videos, how can anyone learn if you are speeding through the features in the video :(
can't slow down the speed of the video? or pause?
Usually, you'd be correct, however, I noticed at least one instance in your video above where I couldn't figure out what you'd done and that was because you didn't slow down and address it. Where you changed e.range.row to e.range.getRow. You made this change and then said it worked, however when you flashed back to the screen briefly I noticed you'd actually then added () at the end as well as adding .getColumn() and fixing the editColum var. For newbies, that can make it incredibly hard to follow your steps, especially if you're not providing the code in a document for them to access and you're expecting them to follow along. You might find for future videos that if you split your screen and keep your code on screen the whole time you're talking people following step by step can then slow down if required but can always view it. I really appreciate your efforts and this has been really handy however I did find following this extremely frustrating at times due to your speed and you editing out some of the changes you'd made. That said, keep up the great work mate.@@BetterSheets
This is literally impossible to follow. Why not just show the code from top to bottom? You back track and refill old rows over and over
Did you watch whole video?
Uh yeah. And then I asked AI. And it got it done in a fraction of the time with no back and forth.
I agree without a doubt
That's almost what I want to do, but so sad, that you didn't explain those functions and classes better. It's really hard for me to understand...
Same thought. Just provided an idea but not how to really do it. So thumbs down for this video.
Why didn't you do that step by step? First one with the usual check box, without changing any start/stop labeles? After you've mixed different tasks in one code, it's almost impossible to follow your way of thinking and coding... for non professional, like me😢 I'm rewatching this video again and again and can't find the solve of my problem. I just need to add time without additing any new rows, labels and checking logs...
So you want to add time... based on a click?
I just love when tutorial videos move at lightning speed. Might be good to know your audience. Just sayin.
Appreciate the feedback!
What if there's nothing in my "executions?"
It may take a moment to show up or no executions even happened.
After carefully reviewing your video, one thing I realized. You intend to mess up things because your intention is clearly not to teach at all but more on views so as others will rewatch your videos many times, and not really to be educational at all. Bad tactic. You deserve my thumbs down button.
Thanks for the review.
Just did this in a fraction of the time with GPT.⌛
Create a button shape with Insert > Drawing.
Click on the three dots by rolling over your new image and select assign script.
Add this code (below)🔽🔽 and save.
Job done!
function startStopTimer() {
const sheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSheet();
const now = new Date();
const formattedDateTime = Utilities.formatDate(now, Session.getScriptTimeZone(), "MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss");
const buttonCell = sheet.getRange("A1");
const buttonState = buttonCell.getValue();
if (buttonState === "Start Timer" || buttonState === "") {
// Start the timer
buttonCell.setValue("Stop Timer");
const nextRow = sheet.getLastRow() + 1; // Get the next empty row
sheet.getRange("B" + nextRow).setValue(formattedDateTime);
} else {
// Stop the timer
buttonCell.setValue("Start Timer");
const lastStartTimeRow = sheet.getLastRow();
sheet.getRange("C" + lastStartTimeRow).setValue(formattedDateTime);
}
}
Not sure that is going to work for everyone.
