It's crazy. I was just listening to this and Let's Pretend just a few days before he passed. People my age know what I mean when I say the performers we loved growing up are leaving us and it lets us know about how precious time is.
But it's going to feel funny being 75 or 80 and listening to the Raspberries. My parents came up during the tail end of the Big Band era. That was the music that still held a special place in their hearts. But *we're* going to be some really weird, strange, freaky "old folk"!
I used to always have my eye on Eric Carmen, but Wally Bryson was quite spectacular in his own right. The way he does his guitar spot near the end and then stroll up to the mic to do his background vocals is magical.
Wally played a lot of really cool partial chords with his 12 string Rickenbacker guitar on this song which gave it its "magical" sound and Eric Carmen singing lead is awesome!
remember the good old day the 70 were the best wish I could go back. enjoy it goes by way to fast 70 now and the tunes can make you feel young again even just in your mind.
Great bands whose backup singers played while singing. And singers who can cover the work they did in the studio onstage night after night. Talent entirely underrated and seen less of these days.
I don't think it's underrated, this was the standard back in the day. Sadly, we're a couple generations away from 'bands'. What a golden era. No one thought the future would bring such a monumental torrent of shit down the "music" pipeline, where the "artists" spend most their time posing in front of their own camera, and attending countless awards shows.
AM radio fans loved Raspberries music in the 70's. I was at Charlotte High School in Rochester, NY in the 1970s when the Raspberries came out. I still remember buying their first self-titled "Vinyl" album with the "Scratch and Sniff" sticker on the front. Yes, if you scratched it, it smelled like Raspberries! They had a lot of great songs but my two favorites were, "I Can Remember," and "If You Change Your Mind." I had lost a high school sweet heart back then, and it seemed every one of Eric's words resonated with the feelings I was going through. After Eric left the band for his solo career in the late 1970s, I believe it was the Summer of 1975, I saw the remaining band with Wally Bryson on lead guitar, doing a show at the Hilton High School gymnasium in Hilton, NY. The Raspberries were Great with Eric and Eric had many hits alone and it was great they re-united in the later years to do great shows together again. Thanks for a Great "live" song, Thanks Eric, Thanks Raspberries for Great memories... ♥✝🙏
Raspberries had their own great sound, they didn't copy anybody, sensational music, gold standard of excellence, great music & memories of life, top of the line
Btw, if you appreciate the "McCartney-esque" sound in pop songwriting and vocal arranging, see "Somebody Made For Me" by the late Emitt Rhodes, from the same era (early 70s) as the Raspberries.
absolutely beautiful song, great music & memories of life, gold standard of excellence, legendary musicians, phenomenal sound, very special music, remarkable performance, one of the best bands of all time, fan for over 45 years
I've seen hundreds of concerts but #1 on the list was the Raspberries without question. And that was 30 years after their break-up!!!!!! @House of Blues Chicago
OMG..this is the INCREDIBLE Eric Carmen in his prime. You need to hear Eric in fine rock form in TONIGHT and may I suggest I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE YOU'RE MINE! Better yet, just watch anything Raspberries you can get your hands on; you will not be disappointed.
Thanks for posting this; great song and band! I remember going to see these guys at the Chesterland Hullabaloo back in Cleveland circa 1969!! great memories! :)
It blows me away..It seems that after the first 2 lines, there should be a 3rd and 4th line, like in mostly all songs... but Eric breaks into the chorus right away instead. It's fucking brilliant. Gives the song a ton more energy that the song might not have had if he didn't write it like that. And he does it again on the last verse also.. Am I crazy, or does anyone else out there see what I think I mean?
Absolutely. The point it is that he wants to be with the girl, and he can't even waste two extra lines of verse before he gets to her! The whole thing suggests an urgent and immediate desire to ... get down to business.
@@helengiallombardo4077 Yeah I guess it's Bridge, not Chorus..I don't know too much about song structure, but I do remember in the early early 70s in high school hearing this song, and Go All The Way, and thinking this is Killer, and how much it sucked when The Beatles broke up a few years earlier and maybe this is how they might have sounded if they stayed together into the 70s..Badfinger too..'Power Pop' I guess they call this stuff now.....I do remember I broke out of High School after my Junior year in like '75/''76 and I think The Raspberries broke up at about the same time too..That sucked too because I never did hear any new songs on the radio after that...
Great pop tune, I remember it when it was new! This group was one of the tightest, most under rated bands of their time. Excellent vocal harmonies, wonderfully together overall. Also, the Rickenbacker 360/12 played with some distortion sounds incredible. It amazes me that even with distortion, the characteristic jangley/chimey sound still cuts through (I think the toaster pickups have a lot to do with this).
Party 1978.....Let a pretty brunette know that I wanted to be with her. She let me know that she was there with someone else....we did eventually get together and dated for a while. I see her mom most often these days and she always gives me a kiss on the cheek. Glad I saw you at that party Denise! LOL
Context: this is performed in the studio, thankfully without backing (canned) tracks. I love that the backing vocals are well-captured and demonstrate that the entire band could deliver that rich, beautiful sound of the record. I've yet to see a really good live recording of them that captures the harmonies. It could be that they didn't do them this well in a real-world live environment for technical reasons. The Beatles often managed to do so by sharing microphones, ensuring a good mix and monitor environment.
" I Wanna Be With You."Bruce Springsteen praised the Raspberries at several stops during his Summer 2005 tour.[15] Springsteen's drummer Max Weinberg said that he based his drum style in that period off of Raspberries drummer Michael McBride (particularly on the Springsteen album Darkness on the Edge of Town).[16] Paul Stanley of Kiss, Tom Petty, and Axl Rose of Guns n' Roses, have all also cited the Raspberries as an influence in their songwriting.[4"] ua-cam.com/video/uSPs-MrGsAw/v-deo.html

RIP Eric, this song is a classic and will live on forever.
Raw talent on display right there. No mixing, auto tune or synthesizers. The way grandpaw used to do it. Love, love love it.
That was so well put. AND TRUE! No photoshop here.

💯 percent correct beautiful voice

The best raw live sound ever.
It is not possible to be better than this.
You said it. Yeah!!
That's just wonderful. Thank you! Rest in absolute peace, Mister Carmen. You left the world a better place because of your existence!
The Raspberries were a outstanding early 1970's rock band!.
I would have loved to go on all the way with this original Eric just once.
A lot us would have….what a handsome man and that beautiful incredible voice.

Oh to be that young again, I loved that band in the 70's
Weren't they more like mid 80s?
All their big hits charted in the early '70s. Eric Carmen was still scoring hits well into the '80s, though.
remember the good old day the 70 were the best wish I could go back. enjoy it goes by way to fast 70 now and the tunes can make you feel young again even just in your mind.
So much energy, such a pure sound, still holds up after decades.
50 years later and I still get the same chills that I did when I first heard this on the radio!

I really loved this band
Loved there power pop sound!! Between Eric Carmen's fantastic vocals and those driving guitars what a great band!!
So timeless! Brings back the best memories!
Raspberries 2 albums in 1972 was one of the highlights of the 70s! I'm very happy to have both originals LP. It's a blessing !
A true artist, and rock and roll icon!

The tone in this guy's voice is perfect for this tune -- bet he could sing the harder rock stuff with the best of 'em.

A classic jangling Ric 12-string riff, a McCartneys-esque lead singer and great harmonies. What more do you need?

That's the Rick (Rickenbacker) 360 twelve string sound, with the old style toaster pickups. Great playing and sounding guitar.

Unlike most of the top-40 bands of the time (and probably this time), these guys could PLAY.
They rock actually 😁
That is a very true statement!

Great live performance, shame that they couldn't get the sax section though, I think that's my favorite part of the studio track.
