Valigarmanda uses fire, lightning and ice magic and stands very still for a lot of the fight. This bird is pretty much a Black Mage main.

Naw, more like a minor problem like having a killer bear on the loose. 80 years ago might have been a serious issue, but it went down like a wimp in the MSQ barely doing anything despite its heinous reputation.
The combo of being aether deprived + facing One Punch Lamak was too much for it. Having the WoL& the rest as well was a minor bonus added to that lethal combo
I love how straightforward the premise for Valigarmanda Extreme is. In the story it's established that your party was able to take down Valigarmanda with relative ease because it was aether-starved just after waking up, and you killed it before it had the chance to fully restore its power. So the Wandering Minstrel simply has to ask the obvious question: what would it be like to fight Valigarmanda at full strength?
And it still gets trounced.
@@elodiealaya The minstrel's ballads may exaggerate how strong the Warrior of Light's foes were, but the tales still have to end in our victory. We're still around, after all.

She had something that she couldn't even use at the end of the day and the people involved got a whopping 30 minutes of screen time. Wuk Lamat meanwhile gets half a dozen taco and peace speech scenes. You could have taken Krile out and let the WoL carry around the item in question and the Echo would have still pointed us to the people in question. She did NOTHING.
Listening to this it really gives the vibe that you are fighting against a legend. This isn't a primal born of faith, this is an ancient creature that wrote it's story on the history of the world.

Welcome back grand orchestral boss music. I've missed you. Dont get me wrong, i adore the songs, i love the more upbeat but sometimes you crave that classic boss style theme and holy shit did they hit it out the part with this
The one thing the normal trial lacks compared to the Extreme is the mountain fire tankbuster. It is by FAR the coolest tankbuster we've had in years. It's like the E5S charge buster repeated again and again. The normal trial should have had it at least for a single hit.
I know it's not a hard mechanic to take but swapping off as the tank to take those damn cones is why I tank. Lots of tank busters are just an swing of a weapon with extra windup, or a big rock or laser but when they have that extra-heavy impact it's the bees knees. Plus mechanics that actually require us to stand in the front like the line stacks in the add phase.
I love it as you said it reminds me of E5S or a more dynamic Susano's sword moment, you actually feel like you are defending your party.

It’s also fun for the healer, in my experience.
As a scholar, I’ve actually taken to heal/shielding the tank who will take the next hit, in preparation. It’s a flow that feels really nice to me.

This theme is so majestic and fits the grand, imposing essence that is Valigarmanda. It makes doing the normal and EX trials that much more enjoyable too.
One thing I’ve noticed in Dawntrail with trust is that they are a lot more dynamic with how they play.
For example, in this fight, Alisae no matter what, will get hit by one of the aoe mechanics and complain that there was no way she could’ve seen it coming, then when it happens again, she mentions that she’s ready for it and won’t get tricked again.
Even when you take her as a trust, she seems a lot more prone to taking a hit or messing up a mechanic, pretty cool trust are being fleshed out more
I really love this in the second trial, Wuk gets hit by a lot of mechanics and says something like "I have no idea what I'm doing okay?!"
Similarly to Hydaelyn, Estinien will help Alphinaud evade attacks. And Y'stola is blind.
All in all, I love that they aren't perfect. It really gives us healers HEALING to do in trusts. :D
I noticed this too, and it's a great feature.
It means you can no longer just follow around the Duty Support/Trust NPCs and blindly trust them. You still have to pay attention to the mechanics.

I expected y'know. A big snake. Pretty big. Sizable. Magitek-armor-sized. I have preconceptions about the giant block of ice I had to look at each time I started a new game of FFVI.

Honestly true. When you play FF6 that 16 bit sprite work does not do Valimarganda any justice, even the perspectives given of the Ice Prison in FF14 makes it look smaller than it is. I thought Valimarganda was just gonna be Alte Roit Large Edition, I wasn't actually expecting giant snake god of death.

I loved how this played right before entering the final dungeon of MSQ. So much determination and so heroic it was perfect.

I have a feeling this is Saya Yasaki. She has kinda surprised me with Voidcast Savior for Golbez so I won't be surprised if this is her. Also sounds a little bit like something from Myths of the Realm.

This theme is absolute brilliance, my mind keeps coming back to figure out how this song is literally perfect from start to finish.
This was the first current-content EX i cleared on patch. We tried Zeromus in 6.5, but kept wiping to the meteors. This is genuinely an awesome time.
Trust me when I say it's a much better EX1 than Zodiark was last expac, on launch or otherwise

Not quite. Valigarmanda is more implied to be a mishmash of three different beasts, given the nature of tri/tuli-disaster. The common mix I've seen posited is Vritra, Garuda, and Salamander.

It's also an Esper originally introduced in Final Fantasy VI in a very different context (excavated by a steam punk mining town)

Valigarmanda was my favorite subplot from Dawntrail - god what a cool creature. And thinking about how it's in a weakened state and could still body most of the other Primals and Primal-esque entites we've faced so far. Gaaaaah so cool.
My suspicion is that the Extreme version of its trial will be more akin to its full-power state.

The fact that this was Tritoch from FFVI (later renamed Valigarmanda) is what had me so incredibly hype. The fight was a lot of fun.
@@SlamDancinMoogle and the extreme version really holds up to that. He has so many tri-elemental attacks and mechanics. Makes me wish you could fight Valigarmanda in FFVI, instead of just the magical ice prison.
Fresh off this guy with Duty Support, absolutely good stuff...this expansion is delivering no matter what some might say!
The story was mid, at best. Every single boss fight though has been consistently 8/10 at worst. Absolute blast to play; this extreme in particular straight up has the coolest tankbuster in the whole game
I _was_ going to do this fight with my FC members, but I decided to do it with the NPCs for that truly epic feel. Combined with this music, it was the right call.
Seeing a War as dps and RDM as healer was pretty sus. 😂

I uh, I went back to play it again leading up to Dawntrail and that was kind of a mistake LOL
Naoshi Mizuta hasn't been involved in anything FFXIV related since ARR so I highly doubt it, a lot of the FFXIV style just happens to be pretty similar. That being said I do expect them to possibly bring him on board for the alliance raids (if they don't just reuse the original tracks like with Ivalice lol...)
The percussion on this one goes undeniably hard.
this right here at 3:03 - 3:35 , is so god damn good, I wish it was expanded upon more in terms of capturing that extremely horrifying dread with a choir that sounds afraid to even raise higher above Valigarmanda's might, the chimes in the back too adding a melody in the dark of that feeling
Once again the sound team made great tracks expansion-wide.

Did youth and symphony orchestra for nearly 20 years, as a violinist the best part was hearing strings silhouetted against some blasting brass - trumpets, trombones, tuba, or my favorite - French horn.

My favourite trial out of the three, I like this theme the most, Soken cooked so hard this expansion.
This song is growing on me as i keep wiping to the ex trial. Its not the most epic but damn is it good.

I’ve killed this chicken 60 times now going for the mount, I can hear this song in my sleep.
From about 3:26 to 3:32 you can hear the leitmotif of Torn From the Heavens in the background. Brilliant.
Similar to how Golbez fight felt when it came to the theme music, this is one of the few fights where I miss the sound effects along with the theme! It's so good, but just not the same without the incredible sound design of the different elemental attacks.
4:30 - Perfectly timed Rising Phoenix from the MNK to sync up with the song!

I find it funny how much the plot tried to hype up Valigarmanda as being this unbeatable beast of ultimate power which couldn't be killed and merely contained while hoping never to get free and once it is freed everyone goes "Oh no we are all dead."
Meanwhile my WoL just looks at them like "Bitch i killed Nihilism itself. You think i'm afraid of a overgorwn chicken?
To be fair, it was freed in a considerably weakened state (so we had a fighting chance against it).
It's EX version, on the other hand, is the usual "what if" scenario in which it'd be at full strength.

Valigarmanda wasn't a primal, though.
It was a "tural vidraal" (and likely one of the strongest there), which is a beast that's lived _way_ beyond its life expectancy thus, gained unnatural powers.

People are saying that Valigarmanda was just an easy fight for the WoL, but I really disagree. Out of the entire party who fights with you on Duty Support, Zoraal Ja is the only one who actively acts like this was easy.
All the Scions with you are pretty visibly winded or at least are glad we managed to overcome the beast. Tural legit lucked out that we happened to be there with a stacked party of some of the most powerful heroes and warriors on the entire star.
We've already seen that Gulool Ja Ja is strong enough to fight the WoL one on one and actually make us work for it. Zenos and possibly current Estinien are the only other people who could boast that. And considering the spoilers regarding the Dawnservant's health? That's pretty damn impressive.
So considering that even Gulool Ja Ja had to have help when he faced Valigarmanda down? And that he couldn't defeat it outright and had to seal it away?
I really don't think we're giving Valigarmanda enough credit there. It might not be Zodiark or Endsinger, but that serpent is clearly stronger than the majority of primals and upper tier beings we've met.

Not playing DT yet due to IRL and spoiled myself (but idc at this point), anyone hear some of Valkyrie Profile 2 OST from Motoi Sakuraba? Mostly the cellos. Also some DA Inquisition, from what the others said. Excellent boss theme otherwise, Ex version looks interesting also

Reached the boss after work and I love the mechanics, but I think the music should have been an homage to FFVI
Nah, base game MSQ should always have original music for trials. Leave the references for patch quest stuff. This theme having motifs from Urqopacha and the DT main theme fits way more than if it was FF6 stuff, in the context of the DT story.
So this is the new eikon introduce in Dawntrail?
Valigarmanda isn't an Eikon, but a Turaal Vidraal-more or less a very powerful, very long lived monster that specific people hunt down in order to prevent them from causing issues. Vali is one of the strongest of them, if not the strongest.

Valigarmanda is referred to as the Skyruin and its fury could very much end the lives of thousand due to its mastery of Fire, Lightning and Ice related magics. It was tricked into freezing itself 80 years prior to MSQ by Turaal's Dawnservant and his allies after a fierce battle and, after it gets free in story, the Warrior of Light, Wuk Lamat, two other candidates for the Dawnservant position and some members of the Scions slay it before it can regain its full power.

@@Solusiradikal Fair. Based on story beats and the like, I don't think we're going to see worshipped Eikons for a long while compared to Auracite related matters or legendary monsters in the world. Still have a lot to explore and see though and DT's patch content, so I could be wrong.
It is the same exact thing as the four lords in Stormblood. Beings that lived long enough to become something else

My policy regarding spoilers on titles/thumbnails is that anything shown in trailers or patch notes is fair game to show (i.e. SE wanted to spoil people on those specific elements)
Anything that was not shown in per-release material (such as the final boss) will be getting anti-spoiler titles and thumbnails at least until 7.1 launch.
It was shown not only in the Live Letter multiple times but also in the Launch Trailer...
Was not really a spoiler, the only spoiler would be when we fight it. But the title does not spoil that.
