JT-65 is AWESOME for a Dad with 2 year olds! I can be with my kids, and still work DX! I get the rig and PC up and running. Then I periodically visit to see if there are any interesting DX calling CQ... then, when I find a gem, I begin the absent-minded-stalking! I can see from across the room if someone calls back to me after I try to respond to their CQ... sometime it takes a while to break a pileup, due to the 1 minute cycles. Meanwhile, I'm building box towers or preparing milk cups or toe tapping a soccer ball around. Totally not what JT intended, I'm sure... but DEFINITELY a positive note! 73 de K9SPY
This is a great tutorial, Dave. I wish I had had this to refer to when I first started using JT-64/JT-9. It would have made things much easier! I certainly agree that the most trying part of getting everything set up was the Radio Setup page.
My goodness I truly enjoy your videos Dave. I am on the west coast as well just north of you about 400 miles or so in Independence, Oregon. Looking forward to our first QSO together. Thanks for all your hard work on these. You can tell that you have great preparation and practice. You do a great job. Dave I love the FTDX 3000… What an amazing rig. Just beautiful. I was between that and the one that I purchased which was in ICOM 7300. I sure kind of drug my feet out of the store because I really wanted to leave with the Yeasu.
Thanks for another great video. I just got into WSPR because of your previous video on it. Hopefully you can do a video on how to interpret Sunspot numbers, the solar flare index ect. for HF propagation.
Great video Dave, getting all the software set up now. So this will help me break the ice for my first JT65 qso. Using a compromise antenna, an end fed. Have done Psk31 and WSPR a few years ago but I got a bit rusty after sometime away from the radio. Regards Steve mm0sgq 73
Thanks Dave, love the videos and I'm subscribed. However, I don't understand the point of this mode of "communication". All you can do is get a call sign, grid square, and signal report? What's the point? What am I missing here?
Thank you for this video. I haven't used JT65 in about 3 years and never used WSJT but having only a Linux box have to because JT65HF will not run under Linux. I'm going to book mark this to watch a few more times. 73
Hello Dave, I frequently see stations calling CQ at 3,000 Hz and higher. When I try to respond I do not have any audio out since I assume this is beyond the audio range (USB driver into IC9100). Are they using an SDR radio? I bumped up the dial to 14.077 and it didn't help. It's only the DX Stations I need of course. Thank you for your hard work on these videos!
Dave!!!! How!!!!!!!!! do you connect your transceiver to your computer to do the JT65! Have same problem with Ham Radio Deluxe, what kind of tether or interface, can I purchase?
Sounds like an RFI problem in the shack. Try rearranging cables a bit. You can also get ferrite snap-on beads for the router from Radio Shack and many other places, that might help. Good luck! 73, Dave
I installed it and played a little. But still need to read a bit more. What mode do I set my radio for, fsk? From the videos I've seen I need to turn down the rf gain. Thanks for the video.
Great video, but the Radio Settings page is a critical step that turned into a showstopper for me. Trying to get my Icom 7100 and Rigblaster Advantage to play together is turning out to be very frustrating. I keep getting the "Hamlib error" message, even tried downloading V 1.8 and still no luck. Receive works fine.
I'm not sure what software you're using. Getting these things set up for the first time can be very frustrating. You might ask around in your local club. Make sure you have the right soundcards selected. And make sure that the push to talk is connected between the Rig Blaster is connected properly to the rigs push to talk. Good luck!
I like the videos you do but find the drawing you do all over the page very distracting. Sometimes you even draw over what you are trying to emphasize. Thanks for all the work... but jeeeze!
I understand, however, what should be is just not the case with far too many amateurs, I was not advoating using high power in the digital modes. My point is that it does happen to often with no way to police it
If I understand this JT65, it seems just like a glorified and boring contest style, I assume no direct keyboard to keyboard exchange, all pre-scripted macros, no real time keyboard to keyboard, I would think PSK31 would be better for a general QSO, and key operated CW another good one, not keyboard to keyboard CW. that's like cheating, I'm not under estimating how clever and complex JT65 is, I just see it as I said, like a contest day, which I Find very boring.
Yes, I prefer the conversational style of PSK-31 also. However, of late, many of my conversations seem to end when the other station has exhausted its prefilled macros. One would think with all the youth out there, keyboarding wouldn't be a problem. Alas.
I'm glad David that you didn't take my criticism personal in any way, as I said it seems boring, and generally SSB can be boring also, but when you have to work at the morse key and use the brain a lot more, or direct keyboard to keyboard, not as in macro scripted sentences, it is more fulfilling, just my opinion. I hope one day if conditions improve I might catch up with you on PSK of CW maybe.
Many thanks for uncovering the mysteries of JT65 in your usual clear and precise style.
Clear and lighty. The best video I saw

Thanks for helping take some of the mystery out of digital modes! Looking forward to more videos. 73, KE8EAS
JT65 is on my list to try. Since we have the same receiver I expect your video will be a big help. Thanks for all you do for the hobby. Bruce W5BCA
Good stuff, Dave! Thanks for sharing!
Another good one. Thanks, Dave. 73, KD2MCH
I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for the video!

Thanks to you Dave, I setup JT65 on my Mac and had 10 QSOs that night!
Cool! It's great when things work like they're supposed to. Keep it up! 73, Dave
Very nicely produced video, great info! Thanks!
well done Dave great film very interesting....

thanks for this video Dave.
the exchanges have always been confusing on JT65.

I have been thinking about doing a JT video. Your video is very good. I'll find something else to do!
Randy, thanks for the kind words! Maybe we can collaborate on something. 73, Dave, KEØOG
I use this and it helps me make contacts through the noise with 2 watts from my Flex 1500.

Hi Jim. The JT65 from physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/k1jt/wsjtx.html runs on Linux. 73
Another great video!

You're on the right track. Keep bumping up the dial until these signals are in the middle of your audio passband.
Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks, Dave..KW4PW
Thx for a great Video Dave. I am going to use it for a presentation of JT Modes at the radio club I run. Happy New year 2017 and keep up the good work
Informative, well presented and a pleasure to watch. Hope to run into you at one of the local area hamfests. TNX, de WB7GR
Thanks! Likewise!
Good video.
Dave!!!! How!!!!!!!!!
do you connect your transceiver to your computer to do the JT65! Have same problem with Ham Radio Deluxe, what kind of tether or interface, can I purchase?
See my video on just that subject: ua-cam.com/video/COmSkT06_CY/v-deo.html
Hi Dave thanks for this great video.
Have you ever heard that during JT transmissions the internet modem crashes?
If so why?
Sounds like an RFI problem in the shack. Try rearranging cables a bit. You can also get ferrite snap-on beads for the router from Radio Shack and many other places, that might help. Good luck! 73, Dave
I installed it and played a little. But still need to read a bit more. What mode do I set my radio for, fsk? From the videos I've seen I need to turn down the rf gain. Thanks for the video.
Usually FSK on an HF radio refers just to RTTY. If your radio doesn't have a "data" mode, then use USB. 73, Dave
Awesome. Thanks and cudos to great videos.

Hi Andrew. Check out Ask Dave #25 at ua-cam.com/video/COmSkT06_CY/v-deo.html which may answer your question. 73, Dave
Excellent! w0xs
Hi David! Have you tried this on Linux?
No, just windows.
Very nice and informative tutorials. Thanks Paul GW4AMZ
I like the analogy you said about a band with to few instraments. I'd add, and morons playing them.
I like the videos you do but find the drawing you do all over the page very distracting. Sometimes you even draw over what you are trying to emphasize. Thanks for all the work... but jeeeze!
QRP? LMAO...Not what I've seen. People with linears are running 500- 1000 watts!
I wouldn't recommend this. Best practice is QRP in this case.
I understand, however, what should be is just not the case with far too many amateurs, I was not advoating using high power in the digital modes. My point is that it does happen to often with no way to police it
