I like when Jason locks the door at the end. It's like one of the few ways he can still protect his family, knowing that his kids are growing up and he can't protect them forever.
That's a great observation. I also thought that it was the show's way of slipping in a symbolic commentary that this era was the beginning of the end of innocence. Man, if they only knew what was in store in 2022.
@@fantinuum1040 it was definitely that as well. He's realised the innocence his family once held, his world once held, has finally slipped away. Also, there's no such thing as weekends, holidays, teacher inservices, or scheduled breaks that would ever have school closed to students. You got me.
My Dad was the same, never went to bed until I walked or stumbled in the door. He would often just shake his head at his drunk son, but deep down he was happy I was home, safe and sound...
I remember this when it originally aired. I cried then, I cried now. Growing Pains had some really amazing topical episodes. They did those episodes so well. They didn't cram it down your throat. They made it human, with feelings and wonderful acting. (Today's date is February 14, 2015. Happy Valentine's Day!)
At the end of this episode, Kirk Cameron gave a short talk, in which he expressed how he felt about drugs. I remember after this, my respect for Kirk Cameron grew. Sure, I was a fan of Growing Pains, and thought Mike Seaver was a likeable character. I began to see him as more than just another teen pin up boy.
Watching a sitcom is all it took to make up your mind? How on Earth did you ever stand up to real people to affirm your choice? Unless... you've never actually BEEN in that position.
I never ever did cocaine and that's the honest to God truth. When Mike went to the party and left that was smart. This episode always stuck out with me. I remember being called all kinds of names because I would not do drugs. Them kind of people can go take a hike. I was always impressed on how Kirk Cameron stepped out of character to speak out on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Kirk and Candace Cameron were definitely raised right by mom and dad
In memory of Alan Thicke's passing, I wrote a fan fiction story in his memory from this scene. An extended version of this, plus making it from Jason's point of view.....
What was really frightening about this episode, was when the girl told Mike how mad her parents would be if they found out she was having this party. And Mike understandably said: "I bet." And then she replied: "Well, it's their cocaine." Whatever Mike's faults were in the past, he really took an admirable stand in this episode. It's especially interesting if you watch the pilot episode and then watch this one.
It's crazy watching this now having kids and a son who just started college hoping he would make the same choice if ever he would have to.Loved this show.Miss you Allen RIP.
Gave me the chills at the end when Alan thicke says what a world. Cause it’s been about 5 years already since he’s passed and what a world we are in right now with COVID and other crazy things happening
Loved watching this back in the day it was as close to real life situations ( family) as a television show could get the role playing off each other was terrific and as I’ve gotten older in life and watch all the old episodes I think wow they were all really spot on !!! The writers did a great job with the storyline for each episode also it was like watching an actual family living through life as it happened I learned a lot just by watching them growing up I mean it wasn’t like most shows out there where you can tell it’s acting and their just going through their scripts it was true acting that you could tell they gave so much to their characters you couldn’t tell it was script reading and it’s rare to find such wonderful talented people like them it’s heartbreaking that Alan thicke left this life far too soon he was such a great actor with wonderful talent
The casting and writing for this episode was remarkable; everyone was believable and the peer pressure felt very true to life. Sad that this very weekend kids will make bad choices to fit in.
Growing Pains is the greatest family sitcom and greatest show ever! It's funny and acting is great the pacing is great it has fun storylines and it has a fourth wall and Twilight zone episode called Meet the Seavers that's very creative and all well done my favorite part in the episode is when the set guy carries Ben over his shoulder.
I am amazed. Was television ever really liked this? I was in college in the '80s and I just took it for granted. So wholesome compared to what we have on today. Yet we thought we were so above the cutting edge back then. I guess that's why I just watch retro shows now
This always makes me laugh because in real life, if you say no to coke, the person offering will be like "OK, MORE FOR ME." pfft. But it was the Just Say No 80s.
Just finished listening to Robin Thicke's "That's what Love Can do" and stopped by to see pops Alan Thicke! Glad I did. Great Episode and Happy Ending. :)
I have before .. Many Many times.. One time Alex and Mallory Keaton (Family Ties) showed up with this shit from Puerto Rico and Mallory was letting us do rails off her chest.. Good times good times. Then there was the night the Olsen twins (Full House) came out and we had to kick Kimmy Gibbler out because she was a real buzzkill, and we all wanted to sleep with the Olsen twins that night ... Luckily Webster had a stash of Valiums to put Kimmy to sleep and to calm us dow once we ran out of everything... Turned out the whole time we were buying our drugs from Danny Tanner.. Thats why he was always cleaning. All coked up and needed to do something.... These were great times. Fuck do I miss the late 80's early 90's
I'm looking for a clip from another episode. I think it was from the 1988 season. In the episode, Mike and Boner had planned to go to the local pizza shop to gaze at a girl they both liked tossing pizza bases. Mike had a book report to finish. He was made to stay home and complete his homework. There was a sequence in which Mike has a personal stereo. He listens to the song, Could've Been, by Tiffany. Next, Mike imagines how the night would have been if I had gone out instead. Mike and Boner were looking through the pizza shop window at this girl. She dropped a pizza base. Mike and Boner went inside to help her clean it up. This made me laugh out loud when I first saw it.
Alan was the greatest 80's tv dads to watch very often, and i'm not kidding. Rip Alan Thicke.
RIP to ABC's comedy triumvirate: Alan Thicke, Bob Saget, and most of all, John Ritter.

They don't make them like this because these shows aren't as profitable as they were in the sitcom boom.
