      Reliability doesn't sell motorcycles. Excitement does. The average motorcycle owner will never even put 10k miles on their bike before they sell it or trade it for something new. Suzuki's job was to retain the reliability from their 25 year old dinosaur and IMPROVE performance. They failed at the most important half of that equation.

Exhaust is more interesting, i think they said it has split cats, one in the header one in front of the muffler, so full exhaust may be necessary for 'big' power. It being very similar geo, the aftermarket might be ahead of the bike by twenty years 😅

    I'm just amazed at how ignorant people are about horsepower numbers. The current production drz400s is rated at 39 horsepower at the crank. And this is by Suzuki. Dirt Rider magazine has put several drzs on the dyno and they always come in around 31-32 rear wheel horsepower. This new bike is rated at 38 horsepower at the crank so it's actually slightly less than the outgoing model. It's also slightly lower in compression.

  • @Jarvis60
    @Jarvis60 18 днів тому +3

    Just picked up a used DRz SM and will be building it out as a light ADV and a commuter bike.
    My big interest in the used one is the carb, lack of electronics, and the ability to use lower grade fuel.
    I am use to working on carbs and the DRz is well documented when it comes to jetting and tuning. I may opt for putting in a Smart Carb once I get the suspension set up.
    I know many complain about the 5 speed transmission and carb but for the riding I do the 5 speed trans works great (borrowed a DRz for a couple of weeks to get a feel of the bike).
    Carb versus FI is a big debate. FI definitely can provide better mixture control which is why it is used to meet Emission regs. But when FI fails, or a component of FI fails (such as that little hidden fuel filter on the KTM’s that most don’t know about) it generally will strand your ass.
    A carb does require more service (mainly don’t leave fuel in it for a long period of time) but seldom will fail in a manner that will strand you.

    First off, for those crying about the weight gain, do we know if that is accurate? Because in the past they were always very optimistic about how light their bikes were, and the trend seems to be to publish much more accurate ready to ride weights. For years everyone said the DR650 was 325 pounds, and now they say 366. I really don't se how 3 gallons of gas adds 41 pounds if the old weight was "dry weight", so really we need to see how they really turn out next to an old model on a scale. As for the 6 speed, to do that would have required an entirely new engine and gearbox. We don't know if they changed the gear ratios and raised 4th and 5th, but being that they did substantial clutch upgrades and had to know about the complaints, I bet they did. The DR650 has a 5 speed and cruised 75-80 easily and hits 100mph. The 400 has about the same horsepower and could easily pull a tall 5th gear. Being that the old engine was very reliable and had low maintenance intervals I am fine with the upgrades of EFI and 2 spark plugs which I suspect is going to increase MPG substantially. It seems to me that they kept a lot of the good of the DRZZ400 and added a lot of nice refinements with the EFI, more mpg, better starting, better display, fuel gage, LED lights and turn signals, Kayaba suspension, new frame, upgraded clutch and hopefully gear ratios. I wouldn't freak out until we see the sum of the whole. Personally I don't want a 450 with huge power and high maintenance. 40ish horsepower and reliable is a sweet spot IMO.

      I can already tell you these bikes are a disappointment. The +19 lbs for the supermoto and +16 lbs for the dual sport makes these bikes tanks no matter how you look at it. Weight is everything for a dual sport, especially if you ever go off-road. My 24' KTM 690 SMC R is only 10 lbs heavier than the new DR-Z4SM but has double the hp and torque!

    • @twowheelsdown2002
      @twowheelsdown2002 19 днів тому +1

      @@CycleCruza Do we really know if they got heavier? Because I have seen that in the past they often advertised the weights as being lower than they actually are, and are now seeming to be more honest about the actual ready to ride weights. I'm sure they gained a few pounds, but until we can actually weight an old and new bike side by side, we really don't know.

    I'm seeing a lot of negative crap from people saying it isn't better because it's not lighter and more powerful. Well if they put a fire breathing 450 motor in, those same people would be whining about 600 mile oil changes and 1500 mile valve adjustments. it has a LOT of changes! I think the frame and suspension changes might be a lot bigger than people realize. Kayaba makes good suspension and the ergos look a lot better, so I'm interested to see how it handles now. The engine might not be more powerful, but it should start easily, run at any altitude, and get better fuel mileage helping extend range. The clutch design sounds nice, and I'm betting that they did update the gear ratios. Not a 6 speed, but I bet it is improved a bit. It has LED lighting and turn signals. A better display with fuel gage. Ok, maybe we don't need ABS, but that allows it to be sold in more markets, which might help keep the cost down. And it's not a bad thing to have on wet roads on a bike that will get used to commute on a lot. And they made it easy to turn off. It's not meant to be a KTM350 killer. We have plenty of high maintenance barely legal dual sports from Beta and KTM as well as Honda's 450L. That wasn't what they aimed for. They went for the rider that wants to jump on day after day after day, ride to work, explore dirt roads on the way home, and take off on long exploratory adventures. I'm personally excited to see how it rides and handles now, and think it could hit a sweet spot of power, handling and reliability for a lot of riders.

      you dont need a fire breathing motor but 38hp and not on wheel its a joke they can make 450-550cc engine with 45-50hp easy and be reliable. If you cant get power without not passing regulations and affect reliability you just increase the engine size to get more power and torque. Also about suspension at least the sm model should not be soft like butter like it used to be my scooter got stiffer suspension than the old sm

    • @twowheelsdown2002
      @twowheelsdown2002 17 днів тому +1

      @@tougeattack123 Well if you look at actual dyno numbers even the old DRZ400 only came out at 31.8 at the rear wheel. And the DRZ isn't a 450-550, it's a 400. A new pipe and ECU tune should bring it up into the 40's pretty easily. For a large portion of riders, a 400 around 40hp is a pretty good sweet spot, and can always be hopped up. I'm sure the aftermarket response is going to be massive. The change to KYB suspension should be a good change, as they should be highly adjustable, and suspension tuners are very familiar with how to tune them. So tell me where are all these reliable 450-550 engines out there that have 3,000 mile oil changes and 15,000 mile valve adjustments?

    If DR-Z4S was available when I was looking for a motorcycle back in June 2023, I would have taken the DRZ more seriously. It was disqualified mainly because of the carb, but also the lack of the 6th gear. I like the dual sparkplug setup, which should make sparkplug access much easier; handy if there's potential that the bike might ever drown. If I ever had to drain water from my CRF300L Rally, it would be quite a process just to access the sparkplug. I think people are making too big a deal about it missing a couple horsepower. I'm interested to see what owners say about maintenance, fuel economy, and the gearing of the current 5-speed transmission over the next few years. Until then, I'll be sticking with my CRF.

It's always been a great selling bike, the people that ride this type of bike aren't going to care too much about another 15 or 20 lb. Imo

However, the need to re-jet isn't there anymore, but now flash tuning will be available and yield great power increases with some light mods. That said, unless it's cheaper than the new KTM 390SMC-R, this may fall short in the sales.

      That would have required an entirely new engine/transmission. It may be fine if they widened 4th and 5th gears. The DR650 has a 5 speed and cruises at 75-80 easily and has no trouble hitting 100mph, and the 400 has similar hp. It's probably going to get much better mpg as well. And really, until people ride it we don't know how the whole package feels under power.

    Cyclecruza I agree with your evaluation of these bikes. While I'm sure that they are fun to ride they could be much better. Kawasaki did the exact same thing with the new KLR650 a year or two ago, fuel injected it and the weight went way up with no other improvements. And that's after decades of ignoring the model. Meanwhile most Japanese sportbike models get complete redesigns every 3 or 4 years. Personally I feel insulted by the Japanese manufacturers cavalier treatment of dualsport and mid sized adventure bikes. If I buy any more bikes they will almost certainly be Chinese. Currently I have 2 Yamaha WR250Rs that I adventurized and that I love, like countless other fans I always hoped for a larger WR dualsport.

    I like what Suzuki has done with the drz. Yes, it’s heavier, because of the need for EFI, emissions, abs, and mandatory stuff to sell in different markets. Should be able to shed most of that added weight though, if you desire. The drz is a freakin durable workhorse, and though not powerful, has loooong service intervals. It’s a proven, time tested formula and I’m glad Suzuki updated it instead of canceling it altogether. I don’t mind the 5 speed, and think it works for the bike. The 5 vs 6 speed debate is overdone in my opinion, and if anything would just need a wider spread of the 5 gears to make people happy, but whatever. I’d rather hoon around and ride more with less hp than have to service it all the time.

    • @trevor2830

      People that complain about 5 speed transmissions are ridiculous. I got a 5 speed wide ratio gearbox on my YZ450FX supermoto and it is great on the street and highway.
      I am most disappointed with the increase in weight with the new bikes. They could have at least kept it the same weight, the DRZ400 was already heavy but now they are tanks. They should have did all aluminum for the frame and put tubelss wheels on the supermoto, tubes increase the weight and make dealing flats an irritation.

    • @auntjanet2346
      @auntjanet2346 19 днів тому +3

      How do you figure you're going to shed the extra 20lbs??? If you swap the exhaust and go to a lithium battery, you'd be lucky to save 8-10lbs. The DRZ400SM was a pig, this is a pig + 20lbs. Even if you could shed the 20lbs, you're still back where you started with the DRZ400SM, a pig!

    • @patrickthornton2121
      @patrickthornton2121 19 днів тому +3

      @ I said shed most of the weight (18lbs gained, actually). The new exhaust has two cats, so full exhaust and battery should come close! It’s inherently heavier with a beefier frame and subframe, and mandated electronic bells and whistles. And like you said, it’s a pig, and was a pig, so same piggy drz formula, which is a tried and true tank of a hooligan machine that you can beat up on and commute with. Sounds like you didn’t like the drz in the first place, so get something different perhaps? But as an off the shelf reliable supermoto with enough power to hoon, it has its place in the market and doesn’t really have any direct competition. The drz gets a lot of haters from paper racers, but it’s also got a cult following of people who love it. I also think a lot of criticism comes from people who want a different kind of supermoto, a lightweight factory sm with lots of power, long service intervals, and reliability for drz price, which unfortunately doesn’t exist so their frustration gets taken out on the drz, which can take it cause it’s a freakin tank and eats abuse! Now with EFI!

      @jimperry4420 18 днів тому +3

    Like it or not, it is a move in the right direction for Suzuki and the weight is negligible. One thing to consider is that 19 pounds can probably get eliminated via new full system and some evapo garbage getting removed. Weight is everything when it comes to riding off-road, the heavier the bike the more fatigued you will become. There is a big difference in riding a 333 lb bike off-road vs a 265 lbs bike. I'm slim but lean and can bench 300 lbs, don't get it twisted. I can ride a big azz 500 lb ADV bike off-road but you won't make it very far before you are gassed out for wrangling a tank on trough terrain for a long ride. It took extra $3000 to fix it, as honda ships out bubble gum toy. A "rally" version of the DRZ would be the ticket. For that the bike should be 6 speed or at least short 1st gear and tall 5th gear. Most likely, this new one will not have such gearing, seems the engine is based on the old one. Larger tank, bit wider seat, some wind protection. No electronics, please, cable driven throttle, no rider modes, the led screen is fine. DRZ Rally at current weight would be fine. All these manufacturers are smoking electronics, rider modes, slipper clutch, bla bla bla. This DRZ most likely will be a bulletproof bike that could have been the unicorn..........I went with the new CFMOTO mt450 (Ibex) and could not be happier. Too bad.

      If only KTM's were as reliable as the Japanese bikes and their parts as available. However, KTM/Husqvarna are always improving their bikes and usually have the best performance.

    Sorry but a "review" when you don't have any riding pov riding footage or even actual riding footage of yourself gets an instant dislike. Wish people would stop throwing the word review around with all they've done is read a spec sheet like all of us have done..
