As far as the original Let it Be film, I think that a 4K restoration of it would be right at home with The Criterion Collection. Their release of A Hard Day’s Night is superb, and back in the LaserDisc days they had a release of HELP! as well (which my dad owns). CC releasing new 4Ks of HELP!, Yellow Submarine, Let it Be (and ok fine Magical Mystery Tour) would be perfect for those of us who prefer nice restorations and an abundance of Special Features.

I saw "Let It Be" in a theater in May 1970. It was, without a doubt, the MOST BORING movie that I had ever seen! It was merely the Beatles sitting around, rehearsing. B-O-R-I-N-G!!! There was no action. Nothing except the rooftop mini-concert at the end. For me, it was a wasted Sunday afternoon.

Yes, I'm glad you picked up on the matt inner packaging, rather than glossy version that US reviewers have been raving over and rightly so, it does seem that they have received a better product.
As for physical releases, there's a belief in some areas, that only older fans want physical copies, with younger people just wanting to stream. This is, of course, rubbish, when you come to collectors of any age, who want to own an actual item. The steel book editions of some movies and TV series are a good example of this. Beatles fans young and old often invest heavily in physical product. Disney need to do their homework.

As someone who didn't have the Disney+ channel and therefore had to wait until the public release I am absolutely delighted to own a copy of this amazing documentary. I've been waiting for 40+ years for something like this.
Just be thankful that this even exists at all.
What a great experience it is watching the Beatles for almost 8 hour's.
The Beatles had so many songs during this period, like most of Abbey Road and Another Day, Back Seat of My Car, Gimme Some Truth, All Things Must Pass. If only they had spent more time getting their songs completed and into shape, they could have made probably their finest album ever.
I am so happy with this release.

Hi Andrew - thank you for your comprehensive review! Not sure if this means much to anyone, but I've been quite shocked by how many people feel cheated because of the lack of any extra audio/visual features! No doubt that the more, the better - but I'm still shocked that we even got *eight* full, jam-packed hours to begin with...! I've been Beatles-obsessed since I was four and grew up with just the 1987 CDs and some of the extras like Past Masters, BBC, YS Songtrack, etc; - and anything new such as Love, the second BBC set, the restored MMT and YS films was a superb treat for me, no matter how much or how little. This continued unabated through 2016 with the great Ron Howard documentary, and even then I never could have expected something as extensive as the Sgt Pepper super deluxe, nor that it would continue for another three albums! Having eight hours of these sessions adds a whole new context to what people have thought, assumed or merely bought into for years, and it's such a joy watching our lads in their element in an unexpectedly immersive fashion. If a further expanded edition comes out, that is superb, but in our modern consumer culture of 'more, more and more,' we ought to just be grateful for this much! Many have said they're boycotting this edition because they have no doubt a future edition will come - but how will a further version come out if not enough people show support for this one? As you rightly pointed out, Disney needed convincing to even release this one - we need to show our interest if anything further comes along! I'm sure if Disney wasn't the distributor that Apple would gladly have included extra material (and stuck the Rooftop audio in the LIB super deluxe, as was planned). $34.99 (or its equivalent elsewhere) for eight hours of filmed Beatles sessions is a unbelievable deal to me, and I can't fathom how any serious fan who can afford it would deliberately choose not to. I received the accidental 'recalled' February verison of the DVD in April and also got the new Blu-Ray and cherish them both. Thank you for another fun and well-done video, Andrew!

I couldn’t disagree more. We the consumers have been keeping Apple rich for over 50 years since the Beatles split up, the least we deserve is to have the historically important artefact fully available to those that are willing to pay for it

Thanks for the great review Andrew. This set does look and sound great. I would still love to see the original Let It Be come to Blu-ray as it’s the only official Beatles film not yet released. I would also love the audio of the rooftop in some physical form aside from streaming . I am hoping Peter Jackson will convince Apple to invest in cleaning up the Star Club tapes . He mentioned doing this in an interview sometime ago. Take care.

We must remember that this version of "Get Back" IS the director's cut...Disney had originally planned on only putting out a 2 hour theatrical film before Jackson (and the pandemic) convinced them otherwise. Yeah, of course I'd watch 18 or 40 hours or whatever, but I'm more than satisfied with this version.

An updated version of Anthology is badly needed. Restore the footage, present it in 16:9, update the titles and release it with a deluxe box set of the Anthology albums. Given the reception of Get Back I’d think Disney would be on board.

in order to present it in 16:9, the video would have to be cropped the same way it was done on the McCartney Years DVD. A lot of visual information was discarded on that. In some scenes you can no longer see Paul's bass or the top of his head. Another option would be to stretch the picture, which distorts everything. But your TV can already to that to 4:3 content so even if someone prefers, there's no point.
So no, I wouldn't want it in 16:9.

Thanks for the review! I bought the Blu-Ray version a few weeks ago, and have made it only through disc 1 so far. I’m looking forward to watching the rooftop concert finale (my favourite part of the “Let it Be” original film). I agree, it’s too bad the original film couldn’t be included. It would be great to compare. In the future, I would love to see a complete restored official release of the Shea Stadium concert, and even better, an official release of the old Beatles cartoon TV series.

I have collected a few bootlegs over the past 2 years and have found an interesting copy of the “Then there were two” conversation between Paul, Linda, Ringo, Aspinal and Hogg. Its pretty clear Peter Jackson edited out where there were talks about yoko just so she would sign off on it. I also noticed the hidden microphone conversation between john and paul heavily edited yoko and ringo out of it. I would love to watch the directors cut to see more unedited material.

6:25 If you look at the Get Back music video on 1+, it looks fantastic and should have been what this new series looked like. In some promo material they had about the restoration of 1+, they mentioned they rescanned the film negative, so presumably they'd also have all the film from the Get Back sessions like that too. Hopefully for Let It Be since it won't be as general an audience, they'll restore it better than they did here.

I personally don’t think it has much to do with the broad target audience. Jackson comes across as a bit obsessed with removing any trace of the film medium and creating the feeling of “being there in the room” - with John’s eyesight, I guess.
I’m not too familiar with his early films, but I’ve heard they have similar degraining issues in recent remasters.

I feel like the Let It Be Super Deluxe set was a missed opportunity to include the original Let It Be film, as well as the book that came with the original LP. Apple has always gone out of their way to replicate the packaging with Sgt. Pepper and the White album with the cutouts, poster, etc., so that would’ve been nice to have.
With this, I don’t know how much of a booklet we need after the Get Back book and book in the Let It Be Super deluxe, but I had hoped we could at least get the straight rooftop concert as well as a CD with the concert album that is streaming only. At this point I’d settle for an option to purchase that on iTunes; I prefer to own a copy of my music than pay $10/month to rent it, so I’ve not been able to listen to it since my Apple Music trial ended.

Thanks Andrew for the heads up on the picture quality compared to the disney+ streaming version. I definitely will not be buying this. Why didn't they release a 4k version? Disney has no clue on what Beatles fans want. If fans are willing to sit through an 8 hour version how would 18 hours worth be any different? In regards to the 8 hour version, I was disappointed Peter Jackson glossed over footage of the final day following the rooftop.

The DVD has only been released in the NTSC countries, and in opposite to the region-free BluRay, it's Region 1-coded. Other than that:
    - The BluRay does differ from the Disney+ version by fixing some factual mistakes in the intro;
    - The recalled February BluRay didn't have the burnt-in subtitles that sometimes came up on Disney+ (when anyone was speaking from the off or wasn't too clear to understand) and transcribed those dialogs in regular English subs instead. The final BluRay has the burnt-in subs like on Disney+.

Hi Andrew thanks for the review. I got this from Amazon pre-order in mid July. I have not seen the Disney streaming version so it was all new to me and I really enjoyed it. The visual and sound quality didn't bother me as I thought they were fine - as you say I had nothing to compare it to. The real reason I loved this is that at 20 years old in 1969 I picked up the Daily Mirror and found they were splitting up - it was a really sad day. After that all I heard over the years was how bitter and acrimonious the sessions were before the split and that upset me as since the early 60's the Beatles made us all happy with their music. I know there were arguments over Klein and who left first etc but it was great to see the four of them in Apple working on songs, having a laugh etc. etc. The joy on their faces performing on the roof was magic. This boxset is my ending of the Beatles - a more happy one. I even played the Let It Be Naked LP after watching it and felt a little tear in my eye :o)

I work in a shop similar to the 1 you visited (only in Australia). We only got it on BluRay too which was a huge mistake as a lot of the people who wanted to see it but didn't have access to Disney Plus also don't own BluRay players. With that said though, we received 14 copies (not counting pre orders) with no fanfare. It was listed as a pre order on our website but there was no hype, no posters or other instore decorations, we didn't even know when it was being released until it arrived. Within a week, all 14 copies were sold. When you consider other major releases received plenty of promotion, were available on multiple formats as well as in deluxe box sets and limited edition steel books, shipped in far higher quantities and were hyped to the moon, that would suggest that there's more interest in The Beatles than they thought. It did take a few days before it was flying off the shelf, but that was purely down to the lack of a DVD release. If it were available on both formats, it would have still sold out within a week with the DVDs probably not even lasting that long. Had there also been a 4k release, then that would also have gone pretty quickly. Had it been given the same treatment as other major releases, it'd probably be topping the charts, or at least giving the likes of Doctor Strange 2, Downton Abbey 2 and Morbius a run for their money (and could have easily outsold Fantastic Beasts 3 which only topped the chart for a week because the producers paid for that position).

I ADORE The Beatles and have collected a disgusting amount of bootlegs and I’ve even learned how to play guitar and piano thanks to them, and I know I’m in the minority, but I feel the 8 hour Peter Jackson cut is probably the best bits of all those 18 hours. Releasing an 18 hour cut might just ruin the flow and pacing of the 8 hour masterpiece that feels like a 3 Act structure. Sure, I’d still watch an 18 hour version, but as a whole, I think most people might find it overly long and boring. What’s the difference between the 20th take of Get Back and the 30th take of Get Back? As Beatles fans who have been starved of this Let It Be footage, 8 hours is an embarrassment of riches. Especially when it was originally supposed to be only a 2 hour movie. What we NEED is the 4K release of Shea Stadium, or a Peter Jackson treatment of “The Beatles First US Visit”.

The fact Apple even gave them a physical release in the first place that isn't just a straight dub of the streaming version is already remarkable in this day and age, and like Andrew mentioned, good enough for the normal people in the world.

Hey Andrew - greetings from Australia. I liked the Get Back Blu-Ray very much. As you said, the idea of getting to watch hours of the Beatles just being themselves while working towards creating the songs we like so much is very interesting. As for the future, I would pay very good money for a Blu-ray Anthology set. Like many people, I can't play my VHS version anymore and it would be great to have an updated version.

I was hoping it would at least include a "clean" version of the entire rooftop gig (i.e without cutting away to the street interviews etc.) and the full run-through of the following day's recording in the studio downstairs - Let It Be, Two Of Us and Long And Winding Road etc - which for some reason Jackson didn't include.

Great stuff, as usual. Brutal truth and honesty. Thank you!
What happened to the concept of "just turn it on and watch?" By the time I'd adjust the audio and picture, on the Blu-ray DVD, I'd probably only watch it twice! I didn't see the LET IT BE film until 1981 and it looked dark and drab, no "color" to make anything jump out. To me, this documentary would be best served in "highlight" form, with narration from Paul McCartney or Peter Jackson. Even then, I'd still probably pass.
I'm kind of on board with John Lennon's comments that the album came out only half way decent, seeing that the others that worked on it afterwards (Glynn Johns, George Martin, Phil Spector) didn't really have much ("good") to work with. That was John's opinion, and ever since the days of first hearing the SWEET APPLE TRACKS bootleg over 45 years ago, I'm inclined to agree.

They only went to Disney because of the pandemic. They had a popular streaming service, so they aired the film there. It was originally only supposed to be a theatrical film. Probably two and a half hours. I'm glad they went to Disney. It was even then, only supposed to be six hours. But, Disney being so set against an extended cut, made Peter Jackson add another one hour and 48 minutes. The fact that they chose Disney, is the only reason why we now have this 7 hour, 48 min. Blu-Ray/ DVD set. It would have been much shorter, otherwise.

Hi Andrew great Video as usual.
I received my sealed Blue-Ray Executive Errr collector’s edition (originally ordered in February)last week cost in Australian dollars 83.98. The good thing about the outer card on the box was that it was not glued and was easily removed. The inner box photos are all Matt and the Get Back font is flat no embossing here.
The main gripe I had was when I played DVD one I started getting some flashing and dropouts.
On closer inspection I saw fingerprints on the DVD surface interesting 🤔 a careful clean seemed to correct this issue but I will check all the discs to make sure. The quality of the picture and sound seem very good but I agree with you that the original Disney version was probably better. Also my TV and Blue -Ray surround sound system are not the newest so I’m sure it would look and sound better on a newer system. Re the sound I was surprised there was no 5.1 option (probably too old hat these days).
Still I’m glad to have it and look forward to anything else Mr Jackson decides to put out🙂.
By the way I’ve finally been able to locate and buy an apparently “near mint” Vol. 1 and 2 of the 2004 Capitol CD’s ($129.30 AU) fingers crossed 🤞

I would have loved to have an extended interview with Peter Jackson and a behind the scenes documentary about his work on the documentary. I would also have liked fresh interviews with those people involved in the project back in 1969 who are still with us; Paul, Ringo, Glyn Johns and Michael Lindsey Hogg.

Hi Andrew 👋 Thanks as always, for your video, very enjoyable 😉
You may not want to hear this, but I think us Aussies actually have the best packaging of all! We have a cardboard slipcase around our version! The box slips out of the card showing the top and bottom sections. No glueing here, but if people aren't careful I could see this being damaged quite easily. We also have the glossy interior. All 3 backs, EU, USA, & Australia are different also.
My thoughts on the new Beatles project. Immediately I thought of what Peter Jackson did for Paul in his recent concerts ie. playing with John again. Could they possibly be thinking of having Paul & Ringo interacting with John AND George in different scenes or even songs!? It's possible I guess! Do they need more technology to perfect it?
Can't wait to see what eventuates!
    Cheers,
    Jase

In the USA, Columbus Ohio, I was pretty sure I'd have to order this BD from Amazon, as our local stores carry very little physical media. But, Amazon had it for $100, which prevented my order. To my shock, a local Wal-Mart had just ONE unit, on a shelf. Just one...priced at $34.99. I felt very lucky.
I hadn't seen any of this project, I didn't even look at previews. I didn't want to spoil the excitement. And so, the past weekend has been passed by watching discs 1 and 2, in increments ranging from 30m to an hour. I was spellbound, each moment. For the price, I am pleased with the content and physical presentation.
If I were to suggest differences, I'd rather have had a booklet instead of cards. And I really am never going to like discs sliding against paper, in package design.
I can understand why the original film was not included. I am ready to buy it, but in a separate project. This project was the Peter Jackson one. But, next, let's have the original version, and related material.
I'm sure The Beatles continue to win new fans. But I am keenly aware that the core audience is getting older. The time to release more product is right now. It's already too late for so many. In a few more years, our concerns may be very different than spending money on Beatles media. So please get it on the market now, before the moment is gone.
I'm watching disc three today, and it will conclude a great 3-day Beatles weekend in my little household.
Also, by coincidence this weekend, a local elderly man was selling his CD collection for $30 on FaceBook Marketplace to downsize. I bought them, and now I have a duplicate set of all the original 1987 CDs, plus all the 3 Anthology sets, the first BBC, and assorted McCartney titles, there were over 30 Beatles related CDs in with several hundred by other classic artists. It was strange to remember buying those 1987 discs as they were released and now buying duplicates for almost nothing. How long til someone younger than me is buying my collection...?

Great video, Andrew. By the way, and this is just a wild stab in the dark, do you live in Germany ? I watched quite a few of the Pete Jackson interviews and he said he originally did an 18 hour version as a starting place for the final edit. He also stated that, once he had finished a 6 hour cut, he spoke to Disney about an extended cut as, if they were to release one, he would need to start work on that shortly; that’s when Disney told him that they didn’t do “extended” cuts as they said there was no money in them !! Jackson then made a plea to all Beatle fans to write/email Disney to ask them for an extended cut and, if there was enough interest, it might change Disney’s mind. (Another UA-camr did provide an email address so we fans could email Disney and which I duly did !!) However, Jackson then did his own extended cut by including more footage in the docuseries and that’s why it increased to nearly 9 hours ! Interestingly, in one of the Jackson interviews which appeared on UA-cam, he showed his ipad to the screen and explained he had all the visual and audio footage on it, which was pretty amazing to see. And that’s the version I would like to see !!

A+ review! I agree, the film had a more vivid picture on the Disney+ stream -- thank you for mentioning that it was streamed in 4K. I watched it on my 2021 HP Laptop on full screen. I do not have 4K but it was certainly sharper than the Blu-Ray, in 1080p. -- I was considering returning this Box Set but being this is the only one available, and the fact I found it at a great price of $34.99 from Walmart, I believe it is worth keeping. -- There are a few spots that made my jaw drop, as the image is so poor. The photo used for the hidden mike chat in the early part of Chapter Two looked sharp on the Disney+ stream -- yet, on the Blu-ray, for some reason, this photo has a "white-powder" look over it -- and it looks like it's snowing! It's simply a photograph of the table John and Paul sat at -- it isn't any old, damaged 16mm negative (that's been restored). -- This sequence, to me, should look sharp. Even in 1080. -- Yes, the audio quality is indeed superb. I do not think there's a plan to release a 4K version, Therefore... it's a keeper. -- Neil K

Although I would have preferred 4K discs be released, my aging eyes are ok with the 1080p.
I thought I was going to have to make an online order, as the Beatles store's price was 45 USD while another dealer had it discounted at 40 USD. I wasn't keeping track of the release date, and I hadn't pre-ordered it, but I happened to be in a store on the release day and luckily walked past their entertainment section and saw they had their last copy, which of course I bought, priced at 35 USD.
If you buy from a store that uses those security devices like in that German store, inspect the product carefully. Sometimes they put them on tightly so that those cables leave indentations in the box.
