Any experienced photographer will know the difference between a professional still camera and a phone camera...nothing can beat a dedicated camera.

Only if you're comparing them in print or on a lage enough screen. If the primary purpose was for instagram pictures and social media then the difference is not really going to be noticed even by an experienced photographer by comparing an instagram photo shot from a professional still camera and an instagram photo shot from a smart phone.

@@RamaSivamani You kinda actually can easily tell the difference. Smartphones don't do too well in replicating wide open apertures. You can visibly see the computed blur vs a natural lens blur. If high aperture shot, then the difference becomes a bit more difficult.

    I'll require three things:
    External card, two slots.
Variable aperture with a shallow dof and lens choices.
    Better dynamic range.
The first one can be solved but phone manufacturers won't. The next two would require phones to break the laws of physics.
Smartphones will eat the entry level market, not the enthusiast to pro.

My photography is mainly used at bodybuilding competitions. In recent times the main workhorse has been the iPhone 12 Pro Max as I can quickly upload the photos to social media without editing.
However I can do this only at shows that I help organise so have access to the front of the stage. For shows I am just a spectator at the main tool is a Canon G3X and you can generally sneak it in without spooking security. If I brought in a dslr or mirrorless security with block it more times than not.

I would stay with a regular camera because I like the process, but also so I can customize settings for the best pictures. Phones are getting very good, but there will always be limitations due to the sensor size, the lack of controls for flashes, etc. so while they are very good now and are very convenient, I still think there will always be a need for dedicated cameras for serious photography in my opinion.

Very interesting presentation. The Samsung in manual mode allows you to make very many of the adjustments you mentioned. I think you will be quite surprised at the functionality, but like with conventional cameras the photographer must have the skillset to make these adjustments payoff. I believe that is another reason why cellphones are so popular - they automate by default the process. Try the manual mode and select Raw format for even more versatility.

So to answer some other points in the video. The iPhone camera button can also be activated using the either volume button although in the real world I hardly use it. For some reason I find it easier to press the white circle on the screen with less camera shake.
As for manual control in the native iPhone camera app I agree it is limited. But I was surprised you can get exposure compensation which I do use for stage photography.
I have to agree with you the AI bokeh is not great. It is also limited as you have to be close to a subject to make it work. The most common time I use portrait mode is casual taking food photos. If I was a food blogger I would be using a flagship phone to take the photos with perhaps a portable light like a lume cube or profoto c1 if I had more money than sense.

    1) Sensor size, controllable aperture. I think a smartphone can stand even an APSC sensor and a fixed focal length lens, something like a Ricoh GR in a smartphone body. A 1" or MFT sensor could be even easier. But with a big sensor you will need control over aperture, to have some depth of field when needed.
    2) Interchangeable lenses. Remember the Pentax 110 system and it's tiny lenses. Something like that, with minimum flange distance can be done. An open system for manual third party lenses and with small fee for autofocus lenses.
    3) EVF, with some kind of monocular glasses, not attached to the smartphone. Maybe some wifi or Bluetooth device to compose.

It works great for most situations and meets another criteria ... the best camera is the one that is with you. My Nikon Z7 with f/4 S lenses (14-30mm, 24-120mm, 100-400mm) is lighter, fits into a smaller bag, and excels when I need more controls for ... focus stacking, HDR multi-exposure shoots, and very controlled depth of field. Aren't we lucky. We can have both and ... hopefully we are more focused on composition that the technical aspects of our camera. BTW ... another great camera (special case applications) is the Insta360 X3.

I have seen on African safaris people taking pictures with phones and being worse with tablets of animals being a mile away and paying thousands of dollars for doing so. If they will put some bigger sensors in phones the quality could improve. Everyone has a smart phone, so everyone will think they can make images at least as good as any other smart phone shooter. Clients will not pay professional fees fore their events to be photographed with smart phones. There will always be the sinking feeling of paying for something that my buddies and I can do just as well, and for free. Clients equate professional photography with professional equipment, and there is a level of perceived expertise, glamor, and history that accompany professional cameras. So clients will put greater trust in professionals to capture special moments.

I remember when I started filmmaking. It was back when the Canon 5D Mark II was released and everyone was blown away by its ability to record video. Now, it's taken for granted that DSLRs (before their phasing out) have video functionality capable of pro level shooting. I see phones and their cameras at the stage DSLRs were during the 5D Mark II era; so I disagree with Sony that phones will overtake DSLRs by 2024. But they will, just more likely at the turn of this decade, or the beginning of the next decade.
I also think that eventually phones will go back to having one camera instead of several, with that camera possessing a larger sensor and multiple functions, like the separate wide angle and telephoto cameras. Plus, bokeh and zoom needs massive improvement. Sound also, but with better algorithms and potentially a quantum mobile chip in the future, who knows what photography will be like in 10 years from now?

The funny thing now(2022) they got nice high end sensor but not dedicated two steps physical shutter button for focus or keep exposure before shoot. Can't control shutter speed for fast moving scenarios. Noticeable noise on pictures taken under low light situations. Can't change the battery. The way you hold a smarthphone with both hands in order to take a picture will not let you focus on your photo composition. One aspect you didn’t cover is who are the people who are “able” to use the devices? In my case, I suffer from neuropathy with debilitating numbness in my hands; barely can hold a smart phone without dropping it. Many, many people do have conditions that make handling cameras, especially smart phones, difficult to handle. Could you send a message to manufacturers to address the “handicap” issues? My guess is that it would fall on deaf ears - market too small.
My last upgrade was to Canon R5 and RF lenses - quite expensive. But…
Smaller buttons, nearly invisible in the dark. Unless you are blind - no issue.
    Thank you, -P.

I think smartphones and mirrorless will have a place for the next several years at least. The majority of people will embrace their camera phones in our digital world and never look at their old camera collecting dust in a drawer. However, I can't imagine a sports or wildlife photographer switching to a smartphone any time soon as they are nearly useless in the telephoto range. You made a great point that most smartphone photos look the same (cookie cutter) and the processing doesn't really change that as that processing is also cookie cutter and very obvious. You didn't mention that the process of taking a photo not only includes the feel of the camera and its controls but also the variety of lenses, both new and old, that produce their own unique looks and tactile feels. I think that traditional cameras including a particular mirrorless brand retain that analog feel that inspires creativity. That analog feel will never completely fade away. Take the example of vinyl records making a strong comeback in the digital music world. Taking a photo or listening to music has a strong emotional element inherent in the activity for many people and the digital world can be too sterile and unemotional for them. I agree the difference is generally in the process, the emotional involvement, the control and the flexibility with mirrorless vs the speed, easy results and similarity of results that is the appeal of smartphones. I personally prefer the first vs the latter for as long as I can but am also happy to whip out my smartphone when it fits tthe situation or I feel lazy.

Maybe you are going in the wrong direction. How would the photo look if you light it got phone but take it with mirrorless. Fast turnaround with bokeh. The other question is will phones ever be available in professional versions. Most mobile pics are taken by mums and dads, boyfriends and girlfriends etc and they just want a nice record of a moment. And finally phones will become bulky if they increase the sensor size. So they become heavier and more difficult to carry. Strange I worked in advertising agencies and remember when commercial directors came to pre production meetings with a mobile phone bigger than a brick. Love your videos thanks.

Smartphones are real cameras, and ease of use is like a point-and-shoot.
I still prefer a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
All are computers, so they could use computational photography just like smartphones.
Hopefully, mirrorless cameras will get on board with the tech in smartphones or mirrorless could have a short life.

I definitely do not enjoy the process of taking photos with a smart phone. I don’t like the competitional stuff that’s going on eater. But if you shoot in raw and giving the photo some love in post editing, it will give you some result that that’s perfectly fine. in my opinion at least😂

I enjoy the process it takes to get a great photo.. but most people are willing to accept the smartphone as a professional camera.. for instance I went to a pet store recently and they had a Photographer there taking pet pictures.. 20 dollars get a pro photo was the offer... and sure enough she was using her phone and pictures would be ready to download in about a week.. I would never have dreamed of doing such an offer using a phone camera

Just my opinion, but if I hired a photographer to take photos of me in a professional manner (family, wedding, senior, etc) I would not be very happy if they whipped out their cellphone and started snapping pictures. Using an actual camera is more professional

Cell phone is the future it will only get better as years going by. Consider size and weight of mirrorless and dslr when you go hiking. I don't want to put up with that anymore. I am seventy and have no desire to load myself down with gears. There is just one major problem with cell phone
you just can't shoot birds or anything fast in flight. Its simply impossible. Hope someday cell phone can change that.

What I like in Digital Cameras especially DSLR is, it's more reliable than Smartphones. Modern mirrorless cameras has IBIS as well as the lenses. I cannot use smartphones to shoot sports, it is not fast enough and it is not telephoto.
I mainly shoot small events like parties or whatever and sometimes the lighting is not good so you will be needing an OCF which is more handy if attached on top of your camera.
It is hard to dial settings on smartphones than Digital Cameras with dedicated buttons.
Sometimes you need to change lenses from wide to telephoto, depends on situation.
The Bokeh looks fake on smartphones 😅
Lastly, the quality of the RAW file of smartphones are not that good. 😅 it is hard to edit.

Well I am hobbyist. I don't like smart phones for photography. The first issue I have is the lens. The photos are distorted by the lens. Stick a lens on a phone, add a bigger battery and an ergonomic grip. What do you have? The biggest floor of digital camera is the asian mind behind them. I say this after pursuing interests in motor bikes, cars, phones and cameras. Korean, Japanese, Chinese manufacturers just don't want to provide equipment that is requested by the users, and they also engineer in weaknesses into the design. Why? Why don't they listen? So many examples of this.

With a smartphone, u constantly upgrade and get a better photo with each generation. U can do the same with a stand alone camera. But…most people don’t. So unless u can constantly upgrade the camera , then a smartphone will always win with successive upgrades just by advances in technology. But… eventually there is no real difference anymore. The eye just can’t see the difference! And hipsters will go back to analog films like audiophiles with vinyl records. Lol.

Don't believe the hype. Smart Phones are great but not ready for prime time just yet. My iPhone 13 pro was trash when trying to get shots at an indoor graduation. I took much better pics using a Sony 6400 apsc with a 4.5 to 6.3 telephoto at distances of about 30-50 feet from stage. Also took better images using a Sony RX-100 Mark 5 outdoors.
