- Pia Cramling was the highest rated woman year 1984. In this video, Pia Cramling (rated then 2250) played GM Viktor Korchnoi (2645) in 1982, she was just 19 years old then. Korchnoi has always been considered to be one of the world's strongest chess players who did not get the world title. This is the first part of a series of my mother's best games throughout her years. Hope you enjoy the analysis! :)

We always want to see more games of your mom! She's amazing! Do let her know that YT loves her and we hope to see more of her on the channel (especially with her insights as she's a great mentor!)
yea i like this idea too, it would be really good to be able to ask her about key moments in the game. if she doesnt want to be on camera (understandable as Im shy, or if she doesnt have time) just cut in small audio bites, what was going through her mind at that moment? what moves would she play differently today? i think it would help to lay/set the narrative of the game out a little better, focus on pivotol moments. chess can be exciting, its just that most people dont know when the important moments are if you dont highlight them.
i remember when i used to play a lot that my adrenaline would go through the roof and my heart would race when i was up against a good opponent and i make the realiziation that i could win in a few moves. From the outside though its very hard to tell. i feel there is a hude advantage to having a good poker face in chess, you never want the opponent to know you have them on the ropes in case they try to look harder and find a way out of it. I honestly wonder how many great chess players are also good at poker.
This should be a series, reviewing your moms games that led to her GM title
YESSSS! Breh, top comment for new series for Annas GM Mom! What. a fun game to watch.
Whoa. Just... whoa. What a game!
Thanks for showing us one of Pia's greatest games with your analysis.
im just getting into chess and seeing women like yourself and your mom are really inspirational! its always great to see people who have a passion like you guys!
you are lucky ,whin i wanted to play chess all the time it was only grey librarians who played
TYVM, Victor was my first Chess Hero, and I was in the UK at that time, I remember playing through your mom's games in the British Chess Magazine; She truly was one of my Favorite players to follow back in those days. Great Analysis, but also great memories. Very cool.
I would enjoy seeing more of your mom's and dad's games. Thank you for adding so much variety to your streams. It's like watching a television series.
Thank you Anna for this great analysis, I spent more than an hour watching, pauzing, guessing, rewinding and just smiling at this brilliant game. One move away from victory, still an amazing performance by your mother. 😮🙂
Every GM I heard talking about your mom said: „The legendary Pia Cramlimg“. 🙌🏻 Please keep on producing content about her and with her. 💯
I love your energy and enthusiasm so much
that whenever I feel bored or low I just like to watch you and gain instant recharging
Kudos to you and your Mom Anna!
Definitely would love to see more of your mom’s games. She is quite an inspiration.
Love to see more with/about both your parents. Huge fan. Great job breaking down the game for us too!!!
Thank you for the game. Besides the great commentary, I like how your love and respect for your mother came through loud and clear. Great to see.
Hey Anna, I love your videos - thanks for sharing! This one is also great - what a lovely game by your mum! all the best from Austria!
Nice idea to honor your incredible mother like this. Plz make them chronological and tell the history of the tournament also. So we can see the history of her chees 🙂
Maybe 1-2 games from the major tournaments she has played ? (like agadmator has done with "Murphy saga")
This is a great idea.
I really enjoy when you take the time to show all of the strategy and thought processes. It is very enlightening.
Must be amazing having a mother that good at chess. I played david bronstien in a simal about 25 years ha ha ago showing my age. We got down to the last table my ended up loosing . Nerves play such a big roll in chess in time trouble. Love your zeal. Shame it was a clear win for your mum. Keep up the videos
Love all your recaps, so Well explained and with your amazing vibes 💪👏🏻👏🏻💪❤
I want to see more mum, too, please. I try to learn from her games, so these insights are precious. Her chess is a thing of great beauty.
Love watching Pia play. She sees so much on the board. Brilliant really
The ending to this video was absolutely beautiful! I really wish that you become amazing as you keep playing!
always love more videos with Pia, such a lovely person and strong player.
I really like when you do videos about your mom. So wholesome. Makes me happy
thank you for the why commentary for we who need to up our game, it helps immensely...
Inspirational. More Pia, please! Nice video :)
More of Pia’s games please!
Would be happy to see more content of parents best or interesting games they are great players and people. 😀
love your channel! thanks!
I liked the analysis. Would be cool to get some commentary or memories of the time from your mom, as well.
Great video, Anna. Love it!
Thanx for the video Anna. You're a gem. 💖
When she said "Ruy López", she left me speechless. Amazing 🤗
Why? She was raised in Spain. She’s fluent in Spanish
@@trainerred6582 Yeah, also her dad is Spanish. not a thing to be surprised about
@@deqwek99 It's not a given that children with parents from different countries become bilingual, although I do think that has more to do with the parents. My children are bilingual, but their mother has always been 100% consistent with speaking her native language with them, which also helps since her part of the family does not speak my language.
As for English.... Scandinavians typically do that quite well, especially the younger generations. My main theory for that is that we don't dub our movies so if you want to enjoy Hollywood block busters you see them in English, unless they are targeted at people who are not expected to be literate yet (like small children).
Me encanta la forma que pronuncias Lopez. Bravo Anna, ojala un dia te vea en NY jugando en los parques. Saludos
It's funny how I found Anna Cramling by searching for Pia Cramling. My favorite of your videos all seem to involve your parents. What a great family. You're quite fortunate.
Sometimes all it takes is missing one move...still an awesome game! Way to go! You are very blessed to have such great chess players for parents.
The more I watch this brilliant person Anna C. the more I like her,I'm half Swedish and I'd really like to visit Sweden one day, they're great people 😺
Wow ! Thank you Anna ! That looks good on a chess resume, " I had a winning position against Victor Korchnoi" ...and your Father beating Michael Tal ! ..Great stuff - you have big shoes to fill !
Awesome game. Thanks for posting
Anna, you bring chess to life. You are an inspiration to all of your fans.
korchnoi wrote very readable books one of my favorites
I wonder if Anna's parents are the highest rated married couple ever, based on adding their ratings together.
I think Sopiko and Anish will take that title
@@I_Echion Kateryna Lagno ; Alexander Grischuk might be stronger.
@@Ammyai very well could be! Didnt know they were married
until magnus marry hikaru
@@ferretdash I guess in today's world that is possible.
You can make a series of videos on your parents' games against players and review them. It'd make for good content
As a novice chess player, this was an awesome match. I learned a lot. Thank you Anna!
It is really beautiful to see how you absolutely admire and adore your mum ❤
The Chess World is so Lucky to have your Mum and You and incredibly Lucky to have had Victor Korchnoi..my Dad idolised him.
14:55 she was probably low on time. also yes pls more Pia games 😌 EDIT found the pgn, fxe3 was move 39 so... time trouble and close to time control? 🤔
In the second Video Anna mentions at the end, her mom says that Viktor Korchnoi probably saw the winning move during the game, but she was in time trouble.
Imagine world of chess if Pia didn't miss Qxf7.
Anna, your content became much more interesting!
Keep em going, also curious in your dad games (I know you covered some already)
Chess is about not missing
no one asked@@Austregalo
@tumokonnin wow you waited a whole year to tell him you weren’t interested?
@@jaybee4288 wow you waited 2 weeks to tell me this?
Thank you for the great inspirational message - a message more girls and women should take to heart. (I know I tried to give that message to my daughters)
I watched this game live and couldn't believe my eyes; the LBM tournaments were so great. If I remember Korchnoi had the worst tournament of his life, making something like 4.5/9 including losing to a very young Dibyendu Barua to a vicious trick in a knight endgame.
How did you guys see the board back then?
@@AfricanLionBat
I was in the room; I was playing in the same event.
@@octavia2 were you able to stand over their shoulders? I always wondered that. Do they have screens now?
Those were the days of chess in the newspapers. New In Chess was just starting out and it was really just a magazine at that point. I have replayed games by your mom from the newspaper and your dad as well. In some ways it was better to be a teenager back in those days than now.
At 14:50 Anna points out that if Korchnoi were to take ...NxR+, then Pia could take back with QxR+ . But that's not a legal move. Pia would have to get out of check first with gxN. (Besides, Qf8# would still be better than QxR+😁)
very good pronunciantion of intermezzo... (italian)... there is a german word however which is more used... great job Anna I love you
Zwischenzug, literally 'in between move'
Beautiful game, indeed!
Hi Anna. Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed the story about how your mother inspired you. On another note, what is the electronic chess board that you use for your videos? Is this a web interface or a software download? Can you give me the name of it or provide a link where I can access it. Thanks. bob
Pia is everyone's favorite.
The line the game didn't go into was the Riga variation - discredited after Capablanca routed Edward Lasker, although he got his won back in a game against young Sammy Reshevsky. White follows ...Bxh2+ with Kh1 Qh4; Rxe4+ xe4; Qd8+ Qxd8; Nxd8+ Kxd8; Kxh2 Be6, at which point White has bishop and knight for rook and two pawns. The ley is to follow with Be3 and not Nc3, after which c5 threatens to trap the light-squared bishop. The line originated in a correspondence game between teams from Berlin and Riga, Riga winning as Black after White didn't take a draw by repetition later in the game.
Yes, please, more of your mom’s games! She is an absolute chess rock star!
You're mom is a rockstar!! I wonder who taught her? Back in those days it was very difficult
This was a very beautiful game!
I'm please to see more classical games on your channel, much better then blitz/bullet... Olympiad was great for you, personally... and Pia far as I saw...1 win in like 10 moves was it?...hope the team done well, as well... Everything to know about this game is well explained, for us intermediate types... (myself one of those who still plays pawn d4, as a small sacrifice for development)... Oh, I did bacame quite a fan of Pia too, thanks to your videos. Regards ;)
Great game enjoyed that. She did have a win but how strong she was at 19 is really cool.
I love the vids about your mom and dad!
double that!
She already was a beast (in chess) looking like an "angel" I'm just surprised she did not use the cow opening but this was nice to look thank you
Anna! Please! Please! Please! ..keep on speaking with this awesome Spanish Accent! ;) I love it
Great game, fun recap.
used to live near kortschnoj when i was a kid. my dad told me fancy stories how he migrated to switzerland, back in the day when chessplayers used sunglasses while playing at championships. when i grew older i knew his health declinded, but he was still around town. then i moved away from chess and forgot about him a bit. next thing was the article in the local newspaper, that he passed. makes me sad until today.
Very cool game by Pia!!
Your as beautiful as your openings, middle game and your end game. Love your channel. Have learned a lot from you.🎉
thx for the game
i would love to see more games from your mom
Great game review! Pia was making insanely good moves considering that they didn't have computers to tell the best moves while practicing for the tournaments.
Computer can't be that much help you still have to understand why that is the best move and you can't come up with that the way AI brute forces it. After seeing how AI solves math problems it very clear it brute forcing it way more steps than any human would do the problem.
@@RedRocket4000 We don't yet know how AI actually evaluates the board states but it cannot definitely brute force the whole game. However, it's already clear that high quality AI can estimate the game state better than traditional chess software that simply tries to brute force the game.
And correctly evaluating the board is the only thing you need for creating superhuman chess software because then you can simply try every legal move once (without any additional moves considered) and evaluate the board state after every move. The legal move resulting in best evaluation is the optimal move.
rest in piece GM Viktor Korchnoi
wow! que buen juego el de tu madre! gracias por compartir!
I adore Pia Cramling. I love your mom's playstyle.
me imagining anna's daughter is making a youtube video at her 21 on the game of carlsen vs anna xD
Amazing!
Viktor K. challenged Karpov twice for the WC title and in 1982 was still ranking 12th.
At 6:47 White is not a piece down, it's 2 pawns 😄
Great achievement of Pia ! Kortchnoi was a fighting player ,not easy to play him .
Dear Anna, here is some personal feedback from my side . I noticed you are sometimes rushing through some crucial situation ( tactical and positional wise) in which I don’t get the picture .
I’m a big fan of you and your parents. I hope you understand my feedback. Kind regards Rut
Anna, alguna vez jugó tu papá contra tu mamá? en un torneo. Buen video!
More Mom, please ❤💛❤
I must not know enough about chess to watch this channel, what was mom's last move that wins her the game. I will admit that I don't play chess but I can usually see a check mate or a winning position. I see how she could have won but what move did she make after she took the Knight?
Wow she was a very dangerous player! 💪
*is 😉
I played against Kortsnoj too, I lost, while he was playing in the same time against 99 other chess players, he won all.
Great fight!
Mrs Pia Cramling doing the best for Father Cramling.
Gbu-Anna.
She was very strong player
She is such a strong player!
Korchnoi had not liked to lose to girls. See the game Korchnoi X Judit Polgar.
Tu madre es una leyenda Anna una jugadora fuertísima y es tan dulce como tú, no me la imagino retándote jajaja quizás da miedo 😅
I love ❤️ how proud she talks about her mother 😇 it gives me hope for our future
Go Pia!
Drawing a 2600 as a 2200, as a 19 year old is completely insane. Props to pia!
I Definitely want to see your mom's games. Your dad's too. Great channel.
Very interesting game :)
I had a hard time following some of the moves, confusing description like the black rook capture by bishop. Maybe change board color from actual game and planned moves.
Wow! What a position! Fantastic to get a draw, probably it was nerves on that stage! Checkmate would have been a sensation in 1988, that said your mum defintiely doesn't have anything to prove :-)!
Not for this or that..but in my generation (born 1963) Pia Cramling is a Legend of chess !
14:55? what u mean? if knight takes, white is checkmated pretty much
What a game!!!!you mom put Korchnoi into the backfoot from move1.A game which korchnoi perhaps saved!!!!
@14:51 when she said that if knight takes g4 and then Queen g6, how is that possible because of knight just gave check? am i missing something?
She *would* have to take the knight with the pawn first, yes.
