My father died in a car accident 50 years ago on the 21st of December (last night as im writing this). I was 3 and my brother was 1. My mother heard the sirens as he was on 2 blocks from home, she was just 21. To honor this momentous anniversary we all said what we had on our hearts, privately and separated by time zones, my candle will remain lit for many days as that's what my inner being is telling me to do. I have always felt his presence around me my whole life, but I have never missed him more than this last past year and this rainy morning. I was led to this beautiful song out of seemingly nowhere, but I know it my father who wanted me to hear it and write a comment which I rarely do. Have the best 2022!
I am moved by your story as this song reminds me of my sister, Joyce. She loved this song. We lost her in 1979 at the tender age of 29 years. She had complications in the 7th month of pregnancy and we lost them both suddenly one night. I will never forget answering the phone when my brother in law called from the hospital and asked for my dad I could tell something was wrong. I was 18 and we were very close for the age difference. She was the only one of my five sisters to get into Classic Rock the way me and my two brothers did. We were all younger by 2, 7 and 11 years and were all very close. My favourite song of all time. I was fortunate to hear Peter Gabriel perform Solsbury Hill live at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas in 2012. He was awesome and his performance of this wonderful song will stay with me forever.
Used to be able to see Solsbury Hill from my bedroom in my late parents' home. I didn't connect the song with the location for many years! A very significant record for me - its about taking a chance and leaving the old and familiar behind to get something better.
My dad passed on the 3rd December 2019, 57 years young, he always said he wanted this played at his funeral, it was played to him coming in, collected his ashes today, broke my heart all over again
kelly stewart I am so sorry about your dads passing. I’m a bit older than your dad and I too, absolutely love this song from the late 70s. I close my eyes and return to a happier time. I find myself wishing to rewind my life and return to the sweet innocence where in life was just starting and I had so many dreams. May God and your father always be there to watch over you. God bless you.
"My heart going BOOM BOOM BOOM!" has always made me feel so inspired and powerful but lately since my divorce it's made me cry somethin' fierce.. Conjures up buried emotion so that you may heal and manage your life's change as best you can. This is emotional magic here people.
This song is the most nostalgic song I've ever had. I remember my dad playing this song in the car when I was 6 years old on a beautiful late summer day in the country side. The wind was blowing the trees because it was windy. Good days...
I know you might never see this comment, but I lost mine when I was 3, and I feel the same way. They're watching us, always. I believe that with all my heart
I think this song sounds like Gabriel had a spiritual experience. It sounds so like the many near death experiences i've read about. Such a beautiful song with so much hidden meaning.
Some while back I was a Courier to the Music and Media business. One of our accounts was Peter Gabriels "Real World" studios in Box. I did a collection there one afternoon and was heading back to Bristol- as I approached Solsbury Hill near Bathampton this came on the radio. Great song- and yes "Liberty she did pirouette....."
I absolutely love this song. The 7/4 time signature and pedal point are amazing musical touches, especially in pop music; but it's the lyrics that really speak. It conveys the feelings on breaking from the norm and stepping out to be yourself, whatever the risks, better than anything else I can think of, and is thus for me one of the coolest and bravest songs ever written.
Once you say it, the |1 2 1 2 1 2 3 | 1 2 1 2 1 2 3 | highlighted by the bass drum (is it the bass? it's the lowest pitch hit in the pattern) is really clear.
In my teens 20s 30s 40s 50s this song is eternal. Family members wanted me to play it at their funerals. THE ONLY TIME I DIDN'T CRY was when playing this....I helped when taking them home.
Not only do I love this song because of the meaningful lyrics, but the theoretical structure. The 7/4 time signature is uncommon, but it fits perfectly for this song. The layered harmonies and chords from the guitars just add those special feelings of resolution to the song!
Everytime I watch/listen to the lyrics I know I'm on the better path. Thank you Mr Peter Gabriel! May your light shine GLOBALLY because we all need to feel your Spirit. ❤❤❤

A song for those reaching thresholds. You gaze out of a door to see a new future. Your mind is the projector. You see what you project. Opportunity for those things you left behind making the decisions that brings you to this door. Opportunities for those things you did not experience taking the path that led you here. Something snaps you out of your comfort zone, and you go. Godspeed pilgrim!
This song has become a classic ballad. One of my favorites that has been analyized for its meaning by many fans. Is it Gabriel writting about an actual meeting with Christ atop Solsbury hill in England? Is it a spiritual awakening he had atop Solsbury hill in which he was questioning life and man's existence. Is it Gabriel writting about how do I breakway from Genesis who are my mates. How will I be recieved? Regardless its an amazing song that always puts me at peace with myself and God.
Wish someone from my past, cared about me enough to “Come and take me home” This reminds me of the story of Jesus. And how when it is our time he will come to take me home.

One of my all-time favorite songs. Classic. I've always believed it to be about his departure from Genesis. The feeling of freedom and liberation mixed with trepidation and uncertainty for what the future could bring. Like all great art, it's open for individual interpretation. For me, I equate it to my life experiences. I've lived in four states, once leaving a job of 11 years and the only place I'd ever lived to take a chance on something exciting, new and potentially better. I've been through a divorce, the loss of loved ones, etc. Each experience has been scary and exciting at the same time.
My brother passed on 3 years ago. I loved that foo 😆😆. He's gone home. The good Lord come for him at work. I'm very happy for him, broke my heart. He loved Peter Gabriel, so do I. Thanks for the video.
I lost my son, my only son, my beloved one. he was a part of me. he was my teacher. now I know that he is happy and when I leave he will be waiting for me.
Song isnt about being sad, but finding that there are more importance in life than what he knew. Song saying it shall be well and that it was time to move on. There is hope in future, if you allow it.
@@StacieMMeier Yes it is, promising new beginnings. The words are that of a positive, upbeat song. But, somehow, it also heavily implies significant 'endings'. This song always brings tears for some reason; even knowing the lyrics, I still can't help it. ;)
I totally agree listening to this song gives you lift makes you think of the past but always makes me smile... truly a master class in lyrical arrangement.. we salute you Mr Gabriel... and thank you.
this song is close to home to me for some reason. Brings me back to a simpler happier time. Reminds me of being surrounded by people I love and the good times we had

I don't know why but this song is very nostalgic to me. Brings me back to a time of childhood innocence surrounded by the people I love and all the good times we had.
Profound and proficient songwriting! Probably heard it before, but just got done with HCF finale and it really struck me this time. That line about illusion is especially powerful. Makes me sad thinking of how much joy we have all probably screwed ourselves out of because of our our neuroses and artificial divisions
This is truly a brilliant song, both lyrically and melodically. Although I'm aware that this is Gabriel's first solo single and that it is at least partially a way to express his feelings about his departure from Genesis, there are lines that are still a mystery and that's absolutely fine with me. Sometimes it's nice to have a little mystery about a song's lyrics, as you soak up the wonderful melody and instrumentation and simply enjoy the poetry of its words and get lost in the interesting images that those words conjure up in your mind's eye.
I apply this song to myself spiritually.True enough I hope I'll be calling upon the Lord and praising him for the life he's given me but I wanna go home with him and all the holy ones to celebrate forever. This song kinda leads me in that direction.
i lost my dad when i was 8 yrs old. this song makes me think of the day he comes and takes me home. This song means way more to me than i care to admit in a public forum. thank you
This song and also "In Your Eyes" to me speak of a relationship with Jesus. I know Solsbury Hill was about leaving Genesis and, In Your Eyes, his girlfriend at the time, but there was obvious intent to connect to one's spiritual side in these songs as well. Such an amazing artist!
i woke up this morning with this song on my mind and remembered how I was totally mesmerized the first time I heard this song over 40 years ago .to this day every time I hear it I get to feeling ... something I just can't explain...
I was born very prematurely 12 1/2 years ago and I was put in intensive care in Salisbury my dad living a fair distance away would listen to this song nonstop all the way to the hospital every day when he came to see me I didnt know it meant so much to him until today when he told me this story when it came on the radio
The lyrics in the last verse are so much fun to sing! I don't ever contemplate the meaning of a song if it's too difficult and I don't care what this one's about. It's just a beautiful work of art.
I always thought that it was about Jesus. However, now I know we all have a ephininy to do what we are meant to. We have to be ourselves and find our own path in life.

Super song
Oh gosh. I'm crying so much from reading this. I know he is waiting to take you home one day.
I lost my boyo, 3 months premi, 20 years back. He shall guide me Home.

I am so sorry about your dads passing.
Memory eternal.
I understand.
I understand this so damned well...
"My heart going BOOM BOOM BOOM!" has always made me feel so inspired and powerful but lately since my divorce it's made me cry somethin' fierce..
Conjures up buried emotion so that you may heal and manage your life's change as best you can.
This is emotional magic here people.
I went through the same thing 3 years ago. And it hurts. Its gonna hurt for a long time. But you will heal. It just takes time.
This song is the most nostalgic song I've ever had. I remember my dad playing this song in the car when I was 6 years old on a beautiful late summer day in the country side. The wind was blowing the trees because it was windy. Good days...
i lost my dad when i was 8 yrs old. this song makes me think of the day he comes and takes me home.
I know you might never see this comment, but I lost mine when I was 3, and I feel the same way. They're watching us, always. I believe that with all my heart
I understand so well. My Dad passed away from cancer last year. I hope when it's my time, my Daddy will take me home.
I think its impossible NOT to be in a better mood after listening to this song
I agree wholeheartedly. For a good double shot of positivity through song, follow this up with The Call’s “Let The Day Begin.”

Thanks for identifying the beat time, 7/4. I'm not musically inclined but know I adore the 7/4 ...ha, I rhymed.
@NiagaraEmergency I had to do some research on the 7/4 time. Amazing how it works for this song. And, like you, the layering adds so much to the song.
This is the kind of song you cannot listen to for years and yet still have the title on the top of your head. Those lyrics are absolutely outstanding.
This song always makes me feel so good and optimistic - and I love my Lord Jesus Christ !!! ❤
I hope you are Orthodox Christian, not protestant or other heretical domination.
I ❤ this song. It reminds me that eternally I will be with Jesus - my precious Savior.
Everytime I watch/listen to the lyrics I know I'm on the better path. Thank you Mr Peter Gabriel! May your light shine GLOBALLY because we all need to feel your Spirit. ❤❤❤
Finally my 3 year search for this song comes to an end!!! I heard first on the radio and couldn't find this song anywhere. I then heard a few days ago and finally was able to find it, I can sleep peacefully now!!

What a Song
Wish someone from my past, cared about me enough to “Come and take me home”
This reminds me of the story of Jesus. And how when it is our time he will come to take me home.
In a world of 7 or 8 billion people, so many of us are alone. It hurts deeply to think about, but alas we trudge on
The film BIG FiSH,really put this song in perspective for me and i treat this song like few others, To me it is art.And has to be 1 of the top 100 songs ever written...In my opinion
this song has such special memories for me. brought me to tears:(

I lost my son, my only son, my beloved one. he was a part of me. he was my teacher. now I know that he is happy and when I leave he will be waiting for me.
The song isn't really sad but it makes me cry and I'm surprised to learn others react that way as well.
Song isnt about being sad, but finding that there are more importance in life than what he knew. Song saying it shall be well and that it was time to move on. There is hope in future, if you allow it.
Sitting here with tears, and then I read about yours. We can all connect to this, we have all lost things that were dear.
@@StacieMMeier Yes it is, promising new beginnings. The words are that of a positive, upbeat song. But, somehow, it also heavily implies significant 'endings'. This song always brings tears for some reason; even knowing the lyrics, I still can't help it. ;)

One of the greatest songs of all time
This makes me think of the Joplin Lyrics "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"
Profound and proficient songwriting! Probably heard it before, but just got done with HCF finale and it really struck me this time. That line about illusion is especially powerful. Makes me sad thinking of how much joy we have all probably screwed ourselves out of because of our our neuroses and artificial divisions
How insightful....how sad.
Beautiful song. Peter Gabriel does some of the most awesome and diverse of songs. Very talented man.
I apply this song to myself spiritually.True enough I hope I'll be calling upon the Lord and praising him for the life he's given me but I wanna go home with him and all the holy ones to celebrate forever. This song kinda leads me in that direction.

to me this song is spiritual in nature
BILL sez indeed it is, and up to ones own interpretation..... that being said most of the lyrics are derived from the Bible.
Randy H I think he's talking about his spiritual awakening.
Definitely spiritual. "Turning water into wine". In my heart the eagle is Jesus.
Maybe you just think Jesus has sexy eyes and want him to give you the D?
i woke up this morning with this song on my mind and remembered how I was totally mesmerized the first time I heard this song over 40 years ago .to this day every time I hear it I get to feeling ... something I just can't explain...
We have to be ourselves and find our own path in life.
a time when it was difficult to tell Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins apart vocally ..love this classic song and the musical arrangement I will never tire of this song..
