Half Guard Sweep-Wrist Control (the Anti Darce)

  • This is one of my very best sweeps. I developed this when I was a purple belt and I've spent the last 5 years perfecting it. Hopefully this 6 minute video can pass on some of the finer points.
    The first thing that I like to point out is that my game is VERY underhook dependent. I understand that the Darce is a very common submission attempt and that is why I named this move The Anti Darce but in reality this move can be used any time your opponent takes an overhook.
    When your opponent starts to fish in that overhook to get the Darce you CAN NOT let them break down the neck. If you lose posture on your head you're probably going to get Darced. If you can get control of your opponents wrist before he/she locks their arms into the Darce Grip then you will most likely get the sweep. Please reference the video to see what I'm talking about.
    Once you have locked up that wrist grip (with your tricep on your opponents bicep) you have a VERY powerful grip, if not the most powerful grip (in my opinion) and it is time to abuse your opponent. Make sure you do not bridge your opponent over. I have seen this taught by a couple of different people and they always bridge their bodies. It may work doing it this way, especially against an opponent who's body size is similar to yours, but against a larger opponent you can run into some problems. Make sure that you complete this sweep by moving the hips. The hip motion is a 180 degree hip movement. It does not have to happen in one smooth movement, you can break it down into smaller pieces.
    Make sure to watch the video to hear about some of the dangers associated with this sweep.
    REMEMBER IT'S ABOUT THE HIPS!

    Can't thank you enough for these videos. I just found them yesterday, searching for backstep defenses, and found your video on that. I'm just at one year training, and my most comfortable position by far is half guard, but I really only do two things there -- go for a sweep by straightening out the trapped leg and pulling the other one in (this has worked very well for me against fellow white belts), or get the underhook then scramble for the back. Your suggestions are awesome -- many thanks!

    I've got to give you this update. This morning I did your back step defense sweep on a blue belt, used my head to pass his half guard like another of your videos showed, and almost pulled this darce defense sweep on another blue -- watching again I realize my back was flat so I couldn't hip in -- tomorrow! Thank you Jeremy!

    This is one of the best techniques ive ever seen Jeremy! the darce is always in the back of my mind playing half guard but with plenty of drilling, i shouldnt have that worry anymore! :)

    This is a GREAT sweep. Been doing it for years. Once you get good, you can even bait them into giving you that arm to hit this sweep.

    Deep Half Guard fits nicely into this situation. Or, you can take your free hand (while having your face smashed into the mat) and grab your opponents sleeve (of the wizzering arm). Next remove your Underhook and reach around and grab the belt on the outside of their arm. This facilitates back takes and sweeps. Make sure you never let go of that hand as it is your pathway to the back.

    I am actually wearing a hemp gi. This is the first one that I've ever owned and I must say that I really like it. I air dry all my kimonos and they can be rough feeling. This is the first kimono that I can air dry and have it still feel really nice. I cant imagine if I actually threw it in the dryer, I might actually want to sleep in it.
    The only thing with this particular kimono is the pants are typical training pants and not rip stop. In an ideal world I would have this top with ripstop

    Nice video Jeremy, what are your thoughts on putting a 1/2 butterfly hook in for the sweep so you end up in side control rather than top half guard?

  • @handsomegorilluh

    Hey Prof Jeremy,
    Do you have any tips on what to do when the guy in your half guard has a strong whizzer and isn't attempting to darce you, but rather he is smashing your face with his whizzer hand to further negate your underhook?

  • @bodyzone360
    @bodyzone360 12 років тому

    Very basic, effective technique. My instructor Jay Zeballos shows an awesome way to force the sweep even if your partner postures away, and even from closed guard against a posturing opponent.

    What if your not in the half guared and everything happens the same way?

  • @radishbak
    @radishbak 10 років тому +1

    Hi Jeremy- one issue I have while implementing this sweep is that they use their free hand (the non-overhooking hand) to post out over my head and stopping them from going over. I usually transition to deep-half if that happens (since the path to their leg is free), but do you have any suggestions to stop them from posting?
    (I hope my explanation is clear enough)

    • @GGBJJ
      @GGBJJ  10 років тому +1

      Deep Half can be a great transition in this event but if they post their hand then you're not scooping your hips far enough. You can work on the hip movement a little more.
      Once the opponent posts that hand they are committed to keeping it on the floor to stop from going over. The trick is to keep them on that hand. This means that when you do the sweep it can not be an explosive movement as they will momentarily post their hand and then take the weight back to their knees.
      If you do this as a scooping motion, slowly, they will keep their hand on the floor and continue moving the hips around the based hand. You can also use your other free hand to post and gently guide your opponent's hips. Keep in mind that this hand is used to guide and NOT to push them over.
      I hope this helps.

      @radishbak 10 років тому +1

      Great Grappling Great advice! I focused more on bringing my hips underneath and have managed to hit the sweep with a little more consistency- haven't yet run into the posted hand problem again, but I'll keep that thought in mind- I think I was too focused on exploding out rather than just simply tipping the opponent over.

  • @mattherzberg991

    Same concept if he goes for the collar choke? Does this grip nullify for the most part his ability to finish the collar choke as you sweep?

    • @GGBJJ
      @GGBJJ  7 років тому

      Only if you get your grip BEFORE they get theirs on the collar. If you get your grip after, you're basically going to choke yourself.
      I hope that helped.

      +gal lilos It can work if you catch them in the transition between Half Guard and Side Control but if they get to settle down you're going to have to force yourself to turtle and do a throw by. Beware the when you come to turtle as they will have full control of their hips!
