      Luke, this is legit and on all the legit sites ... Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime Video, Tubi TV ... I just watched the subbed version recently on Crunchy and it was okay but the dubbed is sooooooooo much better. Talk about no holds barred.
      The show was licensed to Funimation before it aired , the subbed version tanked soon after in Japan (it wasn't bad just mid). The studio behind it cut their losses and told Funimation to just do what they want for the dub. They let the voicers dub it as they saw fit ... we got this. Oh, and just so you know, you got realllllllly lucky . This is one of the mildest of the compilation videos. That said, the show is a must see dubbed ...
      If you wanna have some fun there are a few Ghost Stories subbed vs. dubbed compilations here on UA-cam. This is the best of them IMHO (sub vs. dub parts 1-3) ...

      This isn't too far from some French dub of the 90's. Fist of the North Star and city hunter French dub have extremely goofy moments that don't match at all the seriousness of the original scenes.
      Like in fist of the North Star the MC use hokuto martial arts and hokuto sounds like "haut couteau" which in French means high knife so his attacks would become things like (hokuto de cuisine) high kitchen knife technique or something dumb like that😂

    • @soasertsus
      @soasertsus День тому +2

      I mean it sounds like the had the rights to the series already and thought (correctly) that it wouldn't be popular or make any money in the west if it was translated faithfully, so they used it as a canvas to make something that would be successful. Actually really smart imo, no one would still be talking about this series if it was played straight (Ghost Hunt is a much better anime from the same era with a similar premise, no one has ever heard of it now) but also no company will have funded 6 hours of animation for these guys to make an original comedy series, so they just combined a funny script with pre-existing animation, to make something iconic people are still watching 20 years later.

    To answer some of your questions: yes, you can watch it and the entire show is like this. There is a sub, the original Japanese version was just a kids paranormal anime called Gakkou no Kaidan (School Ghost Stories), and not like this at all. It was made in like 2001 or something. The English version is like this because the distributor who had the rights to release it in the west thought it wouldn't be successful in the Western market at the time (aside from Pokemon, kids anime weren't really popular and the audience was mostly older, since you had to go out of your way to watch it. Anime was mostly aired on Adult Swim and stuff if at all). They figured it wouldn't make money if they released it as is and basically just threw out the original script and turned it into an adult comedy. It's iconic because there's basically nothing else like it that's ever been made and is actually hilarious, like regardless if totally rewriting the source material on their own is pretty egregious for a translator to do, whoever did write it was funny as hell and made a really unique piece of anime history that is probably only still talked about today at all because of their insane dub script.

    There's actually a decent amount of controversy about Localization in the anime community. Some bad actors were in fact changing dialogue / the tone of characters to get their own view points and agendas injected into the series, and unless you speak Japanese you're just blindly trusting that the translations are good and accurate. Sometimes localization is needed, like to replace a joke only japanese people would get with a similar joke that'd land for western audiences, but it's hard to know where to draw that line.
    Another example would be RE:zero. 'Little Girl User' is a literal translation, while some unofficial ones were translating it as 'lolimancer' or 'kiddymancer'. Same meaning, but the change shifts how you react to the term / how you view the subs. Honestly once your wife gains more fluency in Japanese it'd be interesting to have her watch something subbed with you to see if / where the subs diverge from the japanese.

    • @JamesP7
      @JamesP7 День тому +7

      This is true, but this is not “localization” but rather “intentional parody”. It’s not like localizers “fixing” otokonoko characters by making them trans, or adding skewed political rhetoric not relevant to the original scene. Ghost Stories was full on “we will say whatever we find funniest at the moment”, rather than some sort of entitlement.

    13:27 What you are referring to are called "fan-dubs", people have been doing it as they had access to microphones and recording devices. I used to have several old fan-dubbed anime from the 90's, they would just use their own voices and fuck around with the script often making ZERO sense at all. Some would try to tell a cohesive story while trying to be funny, but most just didn't make sense and just threw jokes around like crazy. People still do it, and yes its pretty much like the Abridged stuff. And you'll see people do it for like IG or TikTok clips too today.
    There's an old one that I have that is still up on UA-cam, in bad quality but it can be found, called "Fast Food Freedom Fighters." a fan-dub of an old anime that was called "Project A-Ko". Absolutely hilarious!

  • @werefrogofassyria6609

    This is real. The story is as follows. Ghost Stories was licensed to one company to be localized into English. They were faithful to the original plot and accurately translated it. However, it didn't sell that well in America despite being reasonably popular in Japan. That is, it wasn't total hit, but it wasn't hated and unpopular, either. It was then part of another bundle to be localized into English. The way it worked was the localization companies would license many anime at once and then do them and release in America. The second company noticed that it had already been translated into English, so they went back a bit unhappy. There was a bit of back and forth, and finally, they were given 3 rules: 1. Don't change a character's actual name, 2. Don't change how a ghost is defeated, 3. Do whatever else you want. The actors watched it and they basically went without script to create this. It is an actual English translation, but the second one. It's actually harder to find the first translation because it was relatively unpopular when competing with other great anime such as Evangelion, Dragon Ball, Slayers, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Project A-Ko, and that list can go on.

    If I'm not mistaken, the dub was released in 2005 with the original anime that flopped in japan being run from 2000 to 2001, so they basically said to the dub crew "fuck it, do whatever you want with it"

    As I understand it, what happened was this series was included as part of a bundled licencing deal (i.e if you want anime A, you need to also licence anime B) but the licenser didn't provide much in the way of rules as to how the localization should be handled. The dubbing studio really didn't care about it, so they just quickly banged this one out.

    It's real, it was approved, it was released.
    It flopped so hard in Japan, they sent it overseas to hopefully make some money back. But they cared so little, they let the English dubbers do whatever. Whoever was first in the booth that day set the vibe for the jokes for the rest of the day.
    And yes, you can watch it. The whole thing is on UA-cam in a playlist. I don't know anywhere else you can watch it. I'm sure there's a subbed version, and I'm sure it's NOTHING like the dub.

    Reading comments, I guess there's a bunch of different versions of the story of how this anime got like this. The story I heard was that the anime was a fairly typical "Kids hunt ghosts" kind of anime, made for Japan, and expected to be popular, so they licensed it to be translated for American release before it even aired. But, then it bombed in Japan. It was already licensed, so they couldn't get out of the translation, but they no longer cared because it wasn't successful in Japan, so they told the translators/voice actors to just do whatever they wanted. Contractually, they had to keep the basic story intact, but otherwise, they basically had free reign to do whatever they wanted. So they did this. The series never even aired in America, because the makers stopped caring so much. But it was released on DVD, since they had it. So, why not?

      I think it still holds up to be honest, like in the way Always Sunny works. Because the joke is more so that the characters are all awful people and what they're saying is supposed to be outrageous. I don't find it particularly offensive or cringeworthy compared to a lot of other media from that era which say a lot of that same shit completely uncritically and without the self-awareness this one has.

    The series actually has some major industry voice actors in it, and it follows the same basic plot between sub and dub. The common story is it flopped in Japan but that's mostly a marketing spin. It did well in Japan, but not so well in the west so it was handed off with the stipulation that names had to stay the same and the monsters had to be handled in the same way, but creative direction was left open. Rumors say it was basically ad libbed by the voice actors where they'd just add on to the script as they came in to work, but who's to say really.
    All I know is it exists as a piece of history. It doesn't discriminate in who it's offensive to, and it's kind of perfect to show the humor of the time it came out at. I unironically love this series and it's actually on Prime Video. There are some *wild* scenes that didn't make this comp so I'd suggest giving it a watch, I would definitely check out some videos if you decided to post em.

    Very real. There was a time in Anime when subtitled tapes were made by amateurs who translated them for the sake of their own interests and would distribute them out of garages and con-stalls. Western audiences still thought of animated works as being kid-oriented so the transition of more mature works fell to hobbyists rather than production companies. Even when a series or film did make the transition to Western media they were often a shell of their originals being butchered and Westernized either to meet censorship standards or simply because producers felt audiences outside of Japan wouldn't understand the content. It led to an era of poorly written and badly acted dubs that sort of left a stigma on the medium for years. Shows the likes of Cowboy BeBop and some others were among the first to get a very serious treatment for Western audiences sticking true to the tone of the content and treating it with respect. Shows like that proved the genre had more appeal than it was given credit for and started to turn perceptions in regard to its potential as a serious form of media.
    A few companies would emerge specializing in dubs of Anime and re-sale, often using the same voice actors for several series. Ghost Stories is one that fell into a very strange set of circumstances. In Japan it was received with mediocre reviews even before it was licensed for international release. Given its poor performance when it was given to ADV Films for the dub they were given some creative liberty to work with. The conditions were that the story elements and major plot points had to remain the same for the sake of a coherent story, but beyond that they could do whatever they wanted with the script. And I mean, talk about a golden opportunity for catharsis as a voice actor. These clips are from the actual dub produced, and people got paid to do this. You could say that this was the precursor to the abridged series that we have now, made in a time when UA-cam was still just finding its legs.

    Just putting this out there, but there is alot of misinformation about this series and how it was made.
    - it was NOT a flop in Japan. The series has been extremely popular in JP and the weekly TV ratings of some episodes were ahead of even Dragon Ball, as they were airing at the same time.
    - The Japanese studio did NOT tell them to do whatever they wanted with it. What happened is the Director of the dub, Ste7en Foster (and yes that is how he spells his name now), went rogue (as he is known to do) and decided to throw out the script letting his voice cast adlib their scenes, as long as they generally followed the overall theme. The VAs and Ste7en himself have confirmed this for over a decade now.
