  • CLEVELAND - August 22, 2012 - One of the nation's top basketball recruits collapsed in the courtroom Tuesday after finding out he'd be heading to prison instead of back to the basketball court.
    FOX 8 cameras were rolling for the emotional pleas for mercy, including words offered by the victim.
    Tony Farmer was a standout at Garfield Heights and considered a superstar in the making, one of the country's top 100 recruits. Major colleges came knocking on his door when he was in the 10th grade.
    Farmer fell to the court floor when a Cuyahoga County judge sentenced him to three years in prison for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Andrea Lane.
    There is video of Farmer assaulting Lane, dragging her by the hair and striking her as she cowered in a corner at a Bedford Heights apartment building.
    Judge Pamela Barker said of the video: "Lane is literally cowering in a corner and she is trying to push him away from her. And ultimately, then, he, hits her in the head several times as she is cowered in that corner. That's what the court witnessed on those videotapes, and that does not incorporate, as far as I understand, is all that took place because this was within the confines of the apartment complex.
    Despite what she went through, Lane told the court that Farmer does not belong in prison. His coach, Sonny Johnson, spoke for Farmer, as well.
    "I don't know what type of help he needs. I don't know what was wrong with him that day. I know he was a good person. I hope he still is. I hope he learns from this," Lane said.
    "I'm here to say with my heart, that this young man, if you give him an opportunity, in five years from now, he's gonna make you proud. I know it. I know him," Johnson said.
    In addition to the prison sentence, Farmer also got probation. Judge Barker said he can apply for early release after serving 180 days.

      He got off easy because it was concurrent, which means that all sentences run at the same time. He will only serve the longest sentence for the one crime that he was convicted for. (3yrs) The idiot may have thought that he had to serve 10-15 years

      Kwabena Ekuban this is coming from me who I also is still under 20 years old… so a teenager, by the time you hit at least 13 when your morals are for the most part set, you should know right and wrong, all it takes it one mistake to fuck everything up. And one mistake or 100 mistakes, all should have consequences. I'm sorry, just the way I see things

      Ok. Im 19 but what you said about 13 and youre set is not true. Youre brain doesnt stop growing until about early 20s so decisions you make are not always going to be the wises and are very emotional dependent. But as far as beating a girl up that is just a sign of anger problems and jock mentality in this guy. Not condoning anything he did but i pity his situation

      +DDelilahM jail and prison are two very different things. Also if you actually researched comparative prison terms between genders and races you wouldn't make such a flippant comment about a high school student spending the first 3 years of his adult life in PRISON and subsequently tainting any chances at normal opportunity if he does grow into a different person as he gets older.
      I've never started a fight but I'm also a very different person now than I was at 18...

Last christmas the girl I was dating whipped the Christmas gift i got her at the side of my head causing me to get 5 stitches and all the doctors had to say was jokingly ask me "so what did you do to piss her off so much." But if roles were reversed and I did that to her those same doctors and nurses would have had a concerned worried look for the girl, they'd be looking at me in fear, the police and an investigator would have been there immediately and I would have gotten 1 year in jail

    he collapsed because all he heard was 3 years, then 2 years, 2 years, 9 months, then 5 years, 3 years, and 3 years, IN THAT ORDER. He was adding it all up instead of just listening to the fact that the judge said he's sentenced to three years. He misunderstood completely and was under the impression that it was 18 years and 9 months.

    • @AmericanFartBully
      @AmericanFartBully 9 років тому +2

      Stephen P Meh. I can appreciate how HE might have believed that. Or still does. But, really, there's no guarantee.
      At the high school level, one can be a star & dominate on mostly talent. As an individual. In just about any program.
      However, once you make that jump, it's a whole other thing. In college, EVERYBODY is that much more talented. Focused. Driven.
      Guys who're aren't even quite as talented will surpass a guy who's not quite 100% committed. Because the turnover is so high, there's so many new players coming in, coming on. If you're not a coaches' player, a coachable player; or at least able to figure out how to masquerade yourself as some semblance thereof, then you will NOT be sucessful in college. A good program, the type of program you want to be in order to get drafted highly, will just eat you up and spit you out.
      Now, once you actually get drafted; okay, then, it's a little different. Then you are already a millionaire. And, unlike the NFL, your contract is guaranteed, so a team has a little more invested in you at that point. You then have a certain degree of latitude.
      Which is why a lot of those guys, for whatever reason you might infer, try to act like they don't really try too, too, hard. That it's all talent. That it all just comes naturally.
      But it's really not like that.

      The Stanford case doesn't really compare to the Farmer case. Brock Turner's rape conviction will effect his future the same regardless of how much time is served. The criminal justice system determined Turner's defense of drunkenness and not being completely aware of what he was doing was legitimate. Binge drinking at major Universities *is a problem*, even the woman who was raped said they were both very drunk. The Judge determined Turner has no propensity for rape and violent crime, and there was no risk of him being a habitual criminal. Turner lost his Scholarship and admittance to Stanford, he's now a registered sex offender, Turner is really kind of fucked. It's a high price to pay for getting drunk and having sex with a woman who is passed out drunk...of course the woman gets a free pass and isn't at all responsible for her actions, did she drunkenly indicate to Turner that she was game for sex at any point in the evening? Who knows. This was not an assault and battery rape.
      Tony Farmer savagely beat his ex-girlfriend, kicked her in the head repeatedly, drug her around by her hair, then continued to terrorize her *after* he was out on bond which violated the trust of the courts. Three years is a good sentence for Tony Farmer who was clearly an out of control animal and has also committed statutory rape in a separate incident. As a young black woman says in the comments here, three years wasn't long enough for Farmer. The fact Farmer was clearly remorseless is *disturbing*, you can bet the criminal justice system took that into account.
      Locking Farmer up for three years was a matter of public safety.

    • @rohan4526
      @rohan4526 10 років тому +2

      Because there was a video of this dude beating his girlfriend. There wasn't a video in Chris Browns case, only pictures of Rihanna, which isn't as compelling. When a court reaches a verdict and sentencing, they have to think of the precedent set by the case. If Chris Brown received the same sentence as this dude, then that's saying that any girl (or guy) could possibly take pictures of themselves beaten up and use that to lock their boyfriend/girlfriend up for a long time

    • @rohan4526
      @rohan4526 10 років тому

      You have to do it by a case by case basis and check all the evidence and make sure it is good enough. Sure, we can all assume that Chris Brown did it, but we cannot rely on hunches in the court. That's saying that future judges can rule however they please and use their "hunch" as justification. It may seem messed up and imperfect, but our court system in the US does a lot more good than people would think.

      The judge did feel some pity-- the comment "I haven't finished yet..." was leading to the fact these multiple charges were all to served "CONCURRENTLY" she was hopeful the rest of the family and him would find a little solace in the fact these years weren't compounded... I apologize but I agree with the sentencing... that boy had no accountability ever up until this point and it caught up to him in the worse of ways... the judge didn't fail him-- his environment got him caught up!

    Tony Farmer (born March 24, 1994) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Halcones de Ciudad Obregón of the Circuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico (CIBACOPA). A highly touted high school prospect, Farmer's career was brought to a halt when he was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping charges in 2012.[1] After his release in 2015, he played college basketball at Lee College and participated in the 2017 NBA draft, where he went undrafted.
    In September 2020, police in Kenner, Louisiana, issued a warrant for Farmer's arrest on felony domestic abuse battery.

    Job well done Judge. Pathetic to see this guy collapsing to the floor as if the sentence should have come as some sort of surprise. He thought he would just get off after seriously assaulting another person, why because he is a fucking basketball player. What message would a slap on the wrist sentence here send to promising athletes in the USA? Rape and beat women without any consequences.
    No reason to even hear the victims plea for no jail time since she has allready been threatened by the accuser after he was charged.
    Again, good job from judge.

      +LookForThetruth11 if he was white this guy would have gotten a less punishment. Brock turner. the cops might have brought him a burger if he was hungry too.😑 -_-. Brock turner raped not one but he had 3 charges with witnesses. but got less than half of his sentence. because he went to Stanford the fuck. and it would impact his life badly. wow that is what jail or prison is suppose to do. that is why he should go to get taught a lesson. he should get at least 6 years both of them

    If you do something stupid, it's going to haunt you for the rest of your life. Tony Farmer has complained about this video negatively impacting his life. But he's the one who beat up his ex-girlfriend really bad. And they also told him not to contact the girl but he sent her threatening text messages which they used against him in court. Now he's in trouble again for domestically abusing another girl he dated and will more than likely go back to prison, all because this guy is incapable of stopping himself from hitting women.

      I'm not saying there shouldn't be judgements made, but 'mandatory' sentencing is simply the opposite of passing judgement or sentence.
      The concept should not be a standard, even if the results at the same.

    I want everyone who rabbit-holed their way to this video to read the description, especially the part at the end where people come to his defense. Another person commented below that this guy probably transformed his multi-million dollar career into a $60k career playing ball for rubbish countries. That happened. Now, returning to the topic of his coach saying people should "give him an opportunity" and that he will "make you proud"... In 2020 he was served a new warrant for domestic battery. There's your opportunity.

Did he really think his actions were appropriate?! And why is he so shocked, how did he not see this coming?!

    • @tombproduct
      @tombproduct 10 років тому

      Lovely S.amsoon If you read my post, when I said "middle class" I was referring to myself. What I mean is that I have had a very average life, I live in a urban environment with crime here and there, but the difference between right and wrong have been drilled into me every which way, so my perspective is limited in that I have a difficult time understanding how an individual of his decent stature (pun intended) could not see his punishment coming for the actions committed.

He learned that the hard way.

    Good for him, I have no remorse I see this entitled attitude in my line of work all the time. You get these HS sport standouts who think they can do what they please just because they are local stars. Man we just had a kid who shouldve been locked up for years but they let him go because of being a local standout now hes being investigated for a connection concerning a shooting with a man he just finished having an altercation with. He didnt care about his future when he was punching that girl to the ground why should anyone else.? Someone said hes not a bad guy he was just having a bad day, please the girl he was beating had a very bad day. He looked like he was having the time of his life.

    • @danieltorres1832
      @danieltorres1832 10 років тому +1

      The girl he beat was the one saying he had a bad day. I think probation was enough example they should be punished for the amount of harm they do not the principle of the harm i mean she never started to bleed no open wounds none of that so a couple of bruises im sure thats not worth 3 years in jail but the judge was a woman and if i was his lawyer i wouldve gotten that judge of the case because of her being a woman it would be normal for her to fall linient towards the girl as a man wouldve been mad but wouldve made the proper call abd make him serve probation only.

      Well the fact that you're enough of a dumbass to think you could get a judge taken off a case for conflict of interest because she was a woman is why you're not a lawyer.

    • @GodB4Games
      @GodB4Games 10 років тому +1

      Daniel Torres yeah uh sorry not happening. It wasnt just the fact he repeatedly punched and dragged her across the floor, but the fact that he disobeyed a direct court order to keep away from the witness instead of him doing that he threatens her and beats her. Shows 0 remorse ,entitlement issues, narcissism ,voilent nature, does not adhere to authority. Recipe for a ruined life and an orange peel outfit. As far as a judge what if he had a male judge who happens to have a daughter the same age as the victim? Conflict of interest as well? Please these judges arent going to throw away years of law school and working their way up to be appointed judge just to jeopardize it for a domestic violence hearing. Not happening.
