    *Inspector Calls Quotes + Power and Conflict Quotes + Basic info*
    *Inspector Calls:*
    "A man has to make his own way- has to look after himself and his family" - Mr Birling. This quotes establishes Mr Birlings beliefs and opinions, showing him to be a capitalist and someone who only cares about himself- then his family, but none else. This tells us, the audience that Mr Birling is a binary opposite to the Inspector (who acts as Priestley's mouthpiece) who promotes the idea that we have responsibility to look after each other. He says "We are members of one body", "Public men, mr Birling have responsibilities as well as privileges".
    "You not only knew her, but you knew her well"- Sheila. This is interesting, as we the audience realise the similarities between Eric and Gerald, they both go to the palace bar in order to exploit women, but while Eric, who is completely unflattering and lazy, is frowed upon, while Gerald, a charismatic, upper class man, manages to come across as respectable. While Eric says "A state where a chap turns nasty", Gerald is respectable. However, due to his class he avoids responsibility, Priestley is criticising how the upper classes are able to get away with manipulating and using the lower classes due to their power and authority.
    "Unsinkable, absolutely Unsinkable"- Mr Birling. Dramatic irony, a post war audience will be aware of the titanic and what happened. The titanic acts as a metaphor for capitalism, and how everyone sees it as being "Unsinkable", but it inevitability fails. Mr Birling stating his pride and absolute belief that the titanic will not sink, is him reinforcing his belief in capitalism, and how he believes it will sail, and will be successful, despite that not being true.
    "I did nothing I'm ashamed of"- Mrs Birling. Mrs Birling is reinforcing her belief that she, an upper class women, was not in the wrong when rejecting a suffering, lower class women who carried her grandchild. It's made clear that Mrs Birling is not working at the charity in order to help people, but for the status it brings, it makes her SEEM respectable. She only feels slightly sorry when she learns it was her grandchild who died...
    "We don't live alone, we are all members of one body"- The Inspector. He is pushing forward the idea of socialism, he is essentially saying that we are all responsible for each other, and that socialism is the way to go in order to improve society. This is backed up in the same speach when he says "Fire, blood and anguish" which shows us that if we dont change, we will only repeat history with WW1 and 2, and it will only lead to death and destruction.
    "Hard Headed man of business"- Mr Birling. Establishes his nature as a selfish, self centered businessman that Priestley aims to criticise.
    "Nobody wants war"-Mr Birling. More dramatic irony, it shows his lack of social understanding and how he doesn't truly understand what is going on. Mr Birling doesn't care enough, as he is too stubborn and arrogant to consider the possibility that his belief in capitalism will fail.
    "Girls of that class"- Mrs Birling, shows her disregard for the lower classes, believing herself to be above them. She shows us how she doesn't really care about the lower classes, which is evident with the derogatory language. She also assumes that all the working class care about is money, which while it is something they need, she is surprised that the working classes would refuse money. She also shows a lack of social understanding here.
    "Why shouldn't they try for higher wages"- (I'm not 100% but I'm 99% sure that this is Sheila), criticism of Mr Birling, she criticises the mistreatment of the working classes, and realises the injustice behind the underpayment of the working class. Sheila begins to see the truth behind capitalism and when the inspector leaves, she becomes the new voice of priestly and the working class.

    Hey guys! Would you like more Inspector Calls videos like this on the different characters or would you prefer themes? Let me know 😊

      @user-qv2eg8vi5y Рік тому

      If you did it on different characters would it work if I wrote that in my exam and at the end of the paragraphs I wrote 2 sentences of how it links to themes. And then a conclusion paragraphs dedicated to the themes? :)

      For you mean you'd use this response for the theme (not the character) question?

      @@FirstRateTutors Like I would watch your character essay videos and then if a question on a certain theme came up, I would use your suggested structure of a character e.g. the inspector but I would also link it to the theme through out my exam (for example at the end of my paragraphs I would write 2 sentences on how the character links to the theme and then at the end of the exam I would write a conclusion dedicated to the theme.)
      Would this be a good idea or will I lose marks :)

      @@user-qv2eg8vi5y Yes, that would work! I'd suggest though for the theme question, try to use at least 2 characters if you can. Maybe more paragraphs for one character but try to also add a secondary character.
