The Dr1 seemingly takes off so effortlessly, but the landing looks like a real challenge! I thought these planes to be feeble, but it seems very agile and strong! Great filming! -Sparky

Amazing aircraft.. the description from the Pilot of the flying qualities is brilliant! Those early WW1 aviators must have been truly brave and skilled men. Amazing effort by whomever is backing the operation of these machines today... good on 'em!

Great audio. Nice to hear what the rotaries actually sound like.

Nice filming job. What a wonderful aircraft. I am glad to see him land with minor damage. It must have been scary with all the crosswinds. Thanks.

You know what I'd do if I had this plane. I'd get me a smoke system on it. And I'd fly into little pea patch airports on a dark cloud stormy looking day, streaming smoke, and land. I'd act dazed and confused, and lost, and speak nothing but German. Maybe a little broken kraut-Engrish. Tally ho old good boy, and what? But act nervous. After fiddle farting with my engine, I'd get it started again, and take off, and they'd never see me every again. They'd be talking about me for a while though ;-) Ten years from then, they'd be asking, did that really happen, or was that some Twilight Zone episode you're remembering....

Seems a plane with that amount of lift and "slow" speed can land just about anywhere. Why crosswind?

Sounds like the engine is either on or off...

@Jeffrey Hagelin Some rotarys do have carburetor, but it was easier to reduce power with "kill switch". They do not have separate ignition for every cylinder, there is only one magneto firing one cylinder at a time and always at the same position. ua-cam.com/video/sY07FI91F9M/v-deo.html
If the RPM is lowered by killing individual cylinders the sound would be different and the engine would shake. All cylinders are killed as long as the "kill switch" is pushed and it is clearly heard from the sound.

This engine does have a throttle. Some pilots prefer not to use it because you can inadvertently shut off the engine if you don’t use it correctly.

well ron, you did fine....but flying that thing in any crosswind's a bitch let alone, 90 degrees ??!!! stop that !! I don't want to see that pretty bird wrecked,, crap, I might want to buy it myself !!!!
