Thank you ! I can only draw a comparison between Europe and Japan because I can assess it a bit there. In Japan there are 20,000 temples, but as far as I know only about 70 are still practicing / teaching zazen / meditation and the Dharma transmissions sometimes go to the eldest son, just to keep the temple in the family! In addition, many monks are sent to the monastery by their parents even though they don't want to, so you can find large halls where people prefer to sleep rather than meditate. In Europe, many of the practitioners are very serious people, perhaps because this religion is not culturally “burned” in the same way here ? What doesn't exist or hardly exists are monasteries , that's probably because they can't be supported by the community here because they are too small , the communities I mean. But what is most crucial for me is that it is up to each individual how far they are willing to swim out, to be able to serve appropriately, I wish I could say that about myself, but I try to ! 🙏
This is happening everywhere and is a sign of the decline of the dharma, but we must do our best to transform from within, and in this way transform the world in a positive way 💛💙
'Been there, done that, bought the Buddhist T-shirt' ~Laugh~. I hope you were using common vernacular 'imposter syndrome' as a teaching opportunity, and that you don't actually see yourself as an imposter. Just because you're not part of a monastic community doesn't mean your practice is inauthentic. When we live in the western world having to somehow eke out a living, we are, necessarily, more rough around the edges. Maybe we need more canonized examples of Urban Bodhisattva living within capitalism, so we can feel more legitimate on our paths.
I am pretty clear on my practice but should spend more time on the sitting bit. It was great to do 10 hours of practice in the Seon pang (zendo) but sadly the time there was short. ❤❤❤

Your comment "bought the buddhist t-shirt" got a great laugh from me. I imagined one, bright orange with white lettering, on the front: "Ask me about the Dharma", and on the back, "Kick me". Your videos and perspective have been a great gift and light for me as I investigate these things, thank you for sharing with us.
Aren't we all imposters until the Buddha's Path shows us how that is the case? We are all live action role playing. We act as the character we think we are. We live up to our own self image. But other than thoughts about it, where is it? 😮
There is more than just thought, which doesn't need identity. There is also view, speech, action, livelihood, energy, mindfulness, and stillness. It's when all of these come together in many ways, not just thoughts. Someone well practicing isn't an imposter; they aren't claiming to be enlightened or whatever stage, they are simply someone well practicing, doing the most they can.
Having just experienced a Panic attack for the first time in my life, I have been reexamine my spiritual path and trying to figure out what it is all for. Watching this video it came to me, my existence (that i can prove) is only here because of love and compassion, that is strength thats carried me. Thats what i want to cultivate. I cant escape the mudane world given my circumstance, but im want to give that a honest effort
Each of us needs to transform our own minds and develop loving kindness, with this the dharma remains. When we become polarised and self serving, with this the dharma disappears

I'll be checking this out, just gotta go get my too good to go food. Ah yeah, imposter syndrome, me too mate, all the time. Chakras are not real either. I guess we will just have to fake it until we make it. Thats why I just focus on my bloodveins sometimes, there are twelve connected to the heart. Then, because of the developmental wind (I might be seeing it in pre-birth memories as rolling dough buns with my mother, but the kitchen is wrong and the timing is too early for me to understand the concept of baking buns) believes we are salamanders walking on all fours, thus our face would be there, there is a giant cluster of veins on top of the scalp that look like a face. It's kinda fascinating. It is backed by real science. The chills of pleasure rarely go to the face, maybe they would if I focused on it. Also, I feel a widening of my consciousness before I faint into sleep, as if the eye of the hurricane is enlarged. Losing center. I will attempt to get rid of this by focusing on my third eye, but it is a chore.

By dividing yourself from the compassionate, you rob yourself and them of compassion. The only imposters of compassion are people who use it for profit, or those who use it to elevate their ego above others, I believe.

Eager question: How can one realize a month long retreat in asian monasteries? Im overwhelmed with what monestary and even what tradition to look for. Or like what sites to use for that. Are such retreats even offered there? I would love to practice with commited masters like you guys

Thank you so much for this video and your words. I'm reminded of Carl Sagan, the famous scientist and one of my personal heroes, who created the brilliant TV series Cosmos a few decades ago. He saw the public's declining interest and understanding of science. He saw people getting swayed and manipulated by politicians and people peddling pseudoscience. And he realized that scientists can't just sit in their labs and publish their work. The world needs science communicators. Otherwise, how is the public to know? He created a show that doesn't just teach what science knows, but how science is done. And most importantly, he focused on sharing the incredible beauty of our world, of life, and the beauty of learning. He lit the spark of passion in millions of people, and literally created generations of scientists. I am so grateful for your work and your efforts in sharing your journey and your wisdom. I feel for the many lay people like myself who simply don't have exposure to the Buddhist teachings. It was coming across Thich Nhat Hanh online that first opened my eyes to Buddhism. After that initial spark years ago, my whole world has changed. Your video today inspired me to make plans to attend my local temple this week. This comments section is full of people this video has made an impact on. Thank you, all the best to you, and looking forward to your videos! 🙏
Can't wait for the interview! Talking about the decline of buddhism makes this especially interesting, maybe you could ask about ways to get people back into traditional monetary practitioners in said interview? I would be very happy to hear what perspectives there are for interested on the other side of the globe!
@@ultimatemeaning ha! You are me. We are, together, doing the best we can with the tools we've found. We've got this! Thank you for showing a world that I have not yet seen in this life
Dharma has always been in decline because the so called bodhisattvas didn’t do what bodhisattvas were and are supposed to do. Most mahayanis are hinayanis, concerned about themselves. It’s always puzzled me how shortsighted and dumb the so called bodhisattva practitioners and teachers are.
Maybe we need to define what is meant here by a Bodhisattva. I mean you meet many buddhists who want to appear as Bodhisattvas to others, but that isn't the intended meaning. The question of "decline" has to do with diminishing merit, so the question is "why is our merit diminishing?", and "is it right to blame that on another?" 🙏🙏🙏
@@ultimatemeaning Bodhisattvas are individuals who practice the dharma of enlightenment and take personal vow to liberate all beings one by one. Merit is diminishing because human bodhisattvas ie practicing buddhists seem to not be concerned about others around them. Western practitioners even keep their practice secret so people do not even know about the existence of dharma. That’s one. In history there was always a very strong missionary aspect to dharma that was supported by big money, basically endless funds. To this date we can see the outcome of this everywhere in Asia but close to none in other places. That’s the second point about visibility and presence. Third one is the fact that the dharma is communicated and taught in ways that do not seem at all interesting to people despite of the fact that people suffer immensely due to their self-delusion and traumas. I get the sense that you don’t think it is right to blame anyone for this situation but I disagree with that strongly. If and when bodhisattvas have the immense fortune to access, study and practice the dharma and whose very motivation and vow is to directly be involved and help others, don’t you think bodhisattvas of the past and present are actually responsible for it? I mean what is the point if it is fine oh just fine for bodhisattvas to be exactly like hinayanis? I say that the laziness, negligence, poor pedagogics, teachers being poor examples and the lack of genuine compassion that had been going on for ages is exactly the fault of these selfish so called bodhisattvas. This is also the reason why it still isn’t certain that dharma will take root in the West. Dharma groups are becoming smaller because young members don’t join and the old ones from the 70’s die out. How do you think that will be in 50-100 years? There’s much more to say about this but all if this could have been managed very differently with different present and future had the precious bodhisattvas had a more open mind and wits to think ahead. I personally think that dharma will flourish and the golden age of enlightenment is coming but that the old Asian traditions will almost entirely die out and have no significant part in it.
@@ultimatemeaning I'm telling ya man, it was meant to be! Disco has layers and secrets waiting to be uncovered. It's the true history of the world expressed through fiction, shifted just one degree out of phase with ours. Some people play Disco and quit drugs, I played Disco and started seeing my friends again and going to therapy. I've met dozens of people who feel the same way, many of whom are my friends now. How else do I interpret it but to see it as something precious?
I just see a lot of myself in you and would love to, at least, touch base sometime. I'd love to be taught something new about myself if I have nothing to offer you in exchange
As an Ecclectic Neopagan, there is no monetary or hermitage for my faith. Especially not where I am in South Africa. Living as a hermit has become a necessity to substitute. I serve the Divine as an oracle. Keeping away from human chaos is so healing. No dramas. Just the simplicity of life and going against the destruction within. Don't be critical about your stay being short. Rather an hour with a person who knows faith than a year with a self centered fool. Thank you for sharing your journey. Blessed be 🫶🏻
I’m living in Thailand and there are tens of thousands of temples everywhere. All are full of ordained monks. And the communities surrounding these temples know how to Binthabhat for the monks each morning (place food inside their bowls). However Arahants are said to be few or almost gone. So the dharma practice of mind (ie meditation) must be emphasized greatly for the next generations otherwise decline will be here too that will reverberate across the country and all SE Asia and the world.
I love your videos, they bring me a sense of calmness that is rarely found on the Internet. I greatly appreciate it and am always looking forward to your next upload! Thank you. ❤❤❤
There will be a time we work together. The penultimate language of God, does not flow from the lips. A master will return, and when he calls the universe will hear. It will be undeniable.
As a western practioner myself I often feel like I lack the jewel of the Sangha. Thank you for this lovely imagery and the calm presence of yourself and the other monks.
I'm of mind to feel so much during this video. I watched your videos near death.. Buddhism does feel or maybe need a new term as you describe when accommodated by thorough scientific understanding. As to avoid division in a practice devoted to compassion. I sought to be this way before you mentioned the topic. But I think music is the foundation of the pain. A wound that keeps growing due to its mishandling. We and the autistic were maybe the singers in caves keeping the peace. To feel that wound change takes effort that is to address an ageist system. Because to move backwards can be to uproot hope as well as communal ethics. I can't yield comment that is too much in light of your loss. I don't wish to shape someone, capable of doing so themselves with elegance.
Yes sadly many are trapped in the cultural aspects of their practice. And although the cultural framework is essential for a tradition to thrive it is also the principle cause for the tradition to eventually fail🙏🙏🙏
I think monasteries are cyclical. There are times when u practice in the monastery and other times where u're somewhere else. Ikkyu Sojun's iconoclastic approach is soothing to me..as i find that we have similarities in our way of thinking. Thank you for this video and for your calm energy
Zen seems to be growing rapidly in the West. Our practice center in Dallas is filled with newcomers, especially young people who have become regulars; upcoming sesshin (meditation retreats) fill up quickly. The economic situation makes it more challenging for monk-hood, it seems. Perhaps it will grow again after the upcoming political, economic and societal crash. 🥲
I think the percentage of Buddhists in the states is about 1%, and of those those who hold the Buddhist view and have practice must represent a very small percentage❤❤❤

I am old enough to remember Sagan's series and I am also a fan of his work 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for not leaving us behind Chainsaw Monk, we are humbled.
Good thing I didn’t bring my chainsaw to Korea 😂😂😂
Can't wait for the interview!
Talking about the decline of buddhism makes this especially interesting, maybe you could ask about ways to get people back into traditional monetary practitioners in said interview?
I would be very happy to hear what perspectives there are for interested on the other side of the globe!
Sorry I have been experiencing a bit of jet lag but I will get the video edited ASAP. Not sure how I will handle the translation yet though 🙏🙏🙏
So grateful for your perspective!!
Welcome friend❤
Don't be an imposter. Be you ❤
Yes, and who is "you"?
@@ultimatemeaning ha! You are me. We are, together, doing the best we can with the tools we've found. We've got this!
Thank you for showing a world that I have not yet seen in this life
😢

Peace is everything we should strive for. God will vindicate those who love him and are themselves peacemakers.

Funny the cook in our 4 year retreat was an original disco king from Scotland😂😂😂
I'd love to be taught something new about myself if I have nothing to offer you in exchange
thank you
Welcome 🙏🙏🙏
As an Ecclectic Neopagan, there is no monetary or hermitage for my faith. Especially not where I am in South Africa. Living as a hermit has become a necessity to substitute. I serve the Divine as an oracle. Keeping away from human chaos is so healing. No dramas. Just the simplicity of life and going against the destruction within.
Don't be critical about your stay being short. Rather an hour with a person who knows faith than a year with a self centered fool.
Thank you for sharing your journey.
Blessed be 🫶🏻
Hermits live alone, that is the way 🙏🙏🙏
These travels make me envious ❤❤❤. Just kidding, but i still would love to rediscover my homes and see how much theyve changed 😂❤❤🎉🎉❤😂😊
🙏🙏🙏
I’m living in Thailand and there are tens of thousands of temples everywhere. All are full of ordained monks. And the communities surrounding these temples know how to Binthabhat for the monks each morning (place food inside their bowls). However Arahants are said to be few or almost gone. So the dharma practice of mind (ie meditation) must be emphasized greatly for the next generations otherwise decline will be here too that will reverberate across the country and all SE Asia and the world.
yes the Buddha taught that in the end all that will remain is the outer semblance of the dharma. We are approaching those times. 🙏🙏🙏
I love your videos, they bring me a sense of calmness that is rarely found on the Internet. I greatly appreciate it and am always looking forward to your next upload! Thank you. ❤❤❤
Working on it my friend🙏🙏🙏
There will be a time we work together.
The penultimate language of God, does not flow from the lips. A master will return, and when he calls the universe will hear. It will be undeniable.
Oh course it all moves in cycles and eventually we can get off the wheel of time 🙏🙏🙏
As a western practioner myself I often feel like I lack the jewel of the Sangha. Thank you for this lovely imagery and the calm presence of yourself and the other monks.
The Sangha Jewel is sooo important because they are the guides on the path, as we haven't the fortune to meet the Buddha in person🙏🙏🙏
With the right view the temple is within 🙏🙏🙏
I found this video to be of great benefit, and you can see the peace in the Masters eyes🙏📿
🙏🙏🙏
What a strange term used in the title of this video. It mentions a Zen master. As if a person could ever master Zen.
its a translation of his title, not realisation 🙏🙏🙏
Inwards the present day normal people's minds are highly fragmented. And this severe fragmentation of the mind causes suffering.
So true, let's go back to wholeness🙏🙏🙏
Zen seems to be growing rapidly in the West. Our practice center in Dallas is filled with newcomers, especially young people who have become regulars; upcoming sesshin (meditation retreats) fill up quickly. The economic situation makes it more challenging for monk-hood, it seems. Perhaps it will grow again after the upcoming political, economic and societal crash. 🥲
I think the percentage of Buddhists in the states is about 1%, and of those those who hold the Buddhist view and have practice must represent a very small percentage❤❤❤
