Thanks for sharing this information. I think we’ll never get beyond the issue of slavery because so many families that benefited from slavery are now trying to deny their ancestors involvement in it. I know no one alive today had anything to do with slavery in the United States but, there is a popular movement now called (woke) that seeks to restrict what can be taught in our schools on the subject. Black people have been through so much and continue to be treated unfairly in many cases. Information about our history is welcomed even when it’s hard to digest.
It will be interesting to put the pieces of the puzzle together. There are many neighborhoods named after large landowners who were the founding fathers of Macon. Many owned slaves that worked on their large plantations. Bloomfield was named after Thurston R. Bloom. He owned a huge plantation that stretched from Chambers Road down to Sardis Church Road back in the early 1880's. Many roads are also named after large slaveowners.
Debt paid in full with the blood, sweat and tears of thousands of Americans. Slavery was undoubtedly a reprehensible institution but it is over has been for 150 + years. Time to celebrate their lives is now...find as may artifacts and records possible, explore who they were but understand nothing is owed to any of us. We are all Americans....we have overcome. We are free. Let's build a better country by being better people not bitter ones. Nothing good will come from crying over things which cannot be undone by people that no longer exist.
