discipline: the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience Sounds very harsh to me. Is that what "discipline" means in Navajo?
@Jane Elliots Apple's dictionary. It may not be the best definition, Webster defines it as 1. control gained by enforcing obedience or order, 2. punishment, 3. self-control. "Learning the various aspects of becoming a good person is a daily activity." Truly words of wisdom. This is something that was understood and acknowledged from Aristotle to Ben Franklin. This idea that man is basically good is very new. The person who thinks people are basically good cannot be wise.
Mamá Nella would say, “we can only give what we have”, “so then...you must cultivate self love, self respect, self discipline and self care...so we then can share”
Sadly, all of that self, self, self, self, creates an extremely "Self Centered" life. Selfishness is the inevitable outcome. Recognizing that any "Goodness" we will ever have is a Gift from our Creator, through His Son, Jesus Christ, creates a "God Centered" Life. Then we can "Love our neighbors as ourselves." because we see we are ALL in the same need of Salvation.

Being good, being loving, being disciplined is hard work. All the worst behaviours are easy. Consider as a parent how often you guide your children away from bad behaviour 🙏❤️
I learned this lesson at a very young age: as an adoptee, I had one parent who loved me and treated me like his own blood, and another parent who hated and resented me to the point where she made several attempts on my life over the years, both overt and subtle. I chose to be like my father, regardless of the fact that I'm female, because I only had one parent who was worthy of emulation.
Your comment is why it gets me very upset when modern 'feminism' says "All men are potential rapists". Uses terms like "Toxic Masculinity". Thinks child care access is only a "women's issue". Thinks alimony should always be paid (only) to women from men and custody favors women. Masculinity and male role models can be very positive. There are many very GOOD MEN in the world and they deserve more respect and attention. Peace be with you..

I really hope everyone knows just how fortunate we all are to hear this knowledge from an Amazing Elder like Wally. Honor is a prideful thing and we all know what pride does to a person. However if you have respect, you're going to be more rational and less egotistical. That's what I took from it...
"If you don't discipline yourself, the world will discipline you" ... Reminds me of Jeremiah 2:19. Obadiah 1:15. ... So I reckon he's telling the truth.
I really like that idea that you have to learn to be good. It seems like a lot of people were never told that being a good person doesn't just come naturally. You have to work at it. It's natural to be selfish and greedy. We start out as babies seeing the world only as how it affects us. As we mature, we learn to think of someone besides ourselves, and we learn to make a habit of it.
Man's inherent nature is defined as being the same as the Coyote. A pack predator and scavenger. The idea that Native cultures are "primal" or something of that nature gets thrown out the window once you understand Native philosophers, they look at it objectively, man is born as a Coyote -like being and has to learn to be a good man through following the elders, ancestors, the Holy People, and the Great Spirit. Which is a universal truth. Man's inherent nature has violent and selfish tendencies. Native cultures have always perceived that, and taught how to overcome.
Such an awesome philosophy. I completely agree that it’s a life long struggle to be a good person. A strong likeminded society goes a long way to strengthen that point. Sadly that community always seems to be in the minority.
I have never thought of it like this, but it makes sense. I know deep down I've never trusted people or thought they were inherently good. I did recently explain to my husband, as we are raising our 3rd and 4th teenager and as I reflected back on being a teenager, that I would describe myself as becoming less insane over time which took quite a lot of work on both my behalf and God's with quite a lot of grace from Him. May my children discipline themselves so they can be spared the painful discipline of life.

I've spent 45 years of life on this earth, and I learned more from the basic premise that mankind is a damned mess and that you need to live your life everyday to BE a good person, instead of thinking everyone IS a good person because that's the way it is. I spent enough time in law enforcement to know the world is full of bad people and that every day, all of us, live having to make choices, and some choose to be good and to be good people, others choose to not be good and choose a different way, and that it is your choices, every day. The best I learned many years ago, was that to have integrity, is to live your life everyday as if someone else was watching you make those choices, what would you do? As I have gotten older, I've been studying more of the legends of my Akwesasne-Mohawk & Iroquois legends, which are simple, but they make more sense to me and as I get older, they seem easier to understand. Karma is experience, not returning Light, in Sanskrit. You have your karma based on the consequences of the returning Light that you put out.

Nope that's not the concept of karma. Karma is not about this lifetime; eastern spiritual traditions (Hindu / Buddhist) have a circular vision about death.
Dine (Navajo) teachings have a lot in common in what Yeshua taught in the gospels. Much respect to the Native teachers who have come in and out of my life.
Native Americans are our spiritual cousins, that I believe. As I came closer to the teachings of Jesus and God, the natives have very similar teachings.
All religions have this same teachings… Just Navajo happened to be steeped already many years and decades before any religion came about… i ❤that others can understand why this language is an important one for all to understand… Namaste

"Learning the various aspects of becoming a good person is a daily activity." Truly words of wisdom. This is something that was understood and acknowledged from Aristotle to Ben Franklin. This idea that man is basically good is very new. The person who thinks people are basically good cannot be wise.
I just want to thank a wise Navajo elder for sharing his knowledge.
Bless you brother ,all the Elders and all of our Ancestor spirits...Ty
Mamá Nella would say, “we can only give what we have”, “so then...you must cultivate self love, self respect, self discipline and self care...so we then can share”
Spectacular 🙂✌
Sadly, all of that self, self, self, self, creates an extremely "Self Centered" life. Selfishness is the inevitable outcome. Recognizing that any "Goodness" we will ever have is a Gift from our Creator, through His Son, Jesus Christ, creates a "God Centered" Life. Then we can "Love our neighbors as ourselves." because we see we are ALL in the same need of Salvation.

Your videos are cool and nourishing water.

'Cool and nourishing water' a beautiful and apt metaphor.
I am from NM long ago when even Albuquerque was small. I miss it also, and especially the pueblos and of course the good food~ the culture we all love.
Dude. This is spooky. Are you actually me?
"Learning to be good is something you have to do your entire life." I agree, because often it takes a lifetime of experiences to expose us to the consequences of evil and the impact of our bad actions on others. Hopefully, we learn most of what we need to know by age 40, but I'm not so sure.
What is better: to be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”

Jordan Peterson would say the latter.
I pick the latter as the former would be good with naivete. Overcoming evil within teaches discipline, strength and wisdom you dont get if you're simply born good. Good without wisdom is easily corrupted, and tricked into falling.

Someone I can finally agree with. I'm so sick of all the evil. I do believe most people are bad. That's why I go to work and go straight home in my woods isolated.

Wonderful video Wally and surely needed today in this high techno society, estranging ppl more. Time to return to the qualities of what is natural and fundamental in our heart. I feel blessed being raised with values in our family and both parents were caring for others and did not entertain gossip. Kind words and when dad was off from work he left it there. Then was family time.
Thank you for this! I think modern society makes it very difficult to look at ourselves honestly. Everything encourages us to be narcissistic and to fight for our own ego and success - there is very little incentive to be humble and to treat nature with kindness.

"If you don't discipline yourself, the world will discipline you" ... Reminds me of Jeremiah 2:19. Obadiah 1:15. ... So I reckon he's telling the truth.
Thankyou for your wisdom and Navajo knowledge you share.
Thank you for you wisdom and your teaching. Many blessings to you.
I've worked my whole life to be a person I can be proud of.
LIFE has taught me this is MOST TRUE...
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!
Such an awesome philosophy. I completely agree that it’s a life long struggle to be a good person. A strong likeminded society goes a long way to strengthen that point. Sadly that community always seems to be in the minority.
This is so true!!!! Thankful for this teaching!
Love this. I'm glad I happen upon this channel.
Martin Luther said the same thing. And when one considers that people have been slaughtering other people since the beginning of time, it appears Luther and the Navajos were right.

@1 1 wow never heard that about Martin Luther King? Where did you read that? I'm truly curious....
@1 1 it's true, he was a puppet. Black people would have done better with malcolm x
I don't believe everything that is published and provided as truth by government. The goverment(fbi)during that time had a lot to do with trying to destroy Martin Luther King's reputation. Not saying that there wasn't a slither of truth to some info but quite a bit was trumped up. J. Edgar Hoover abhorred Dr. King and the civil rights movement.
Thank you for your wisdom. Blessings !
I have this external instinct that we are all connected by a one love and a lack of that love is what causes people to be bad.
This is the best most spiritually accurate comment (I've found) in this section, certainly more wise and compassionate than those who just say "man is inherently evil" then stop there. That's not the whole story.
@making toast Overcoming boredom can also lead to creativity, I wouldn't say it's all bad. Also, I wouldn't say the desire to work is universally a good thing either. As the philosopher Blaise Pascal suggested, "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.".

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans 3:10
Be careful with that,it's been used to treat people horribly, torture and kill them (remember the Dark Ages? People who were following God's voice and bearing legitimate Holy Spirit gifts were burned at the stake, with self-righteous church and state support, and anathemized). And by the way, christians ,if they are truly following Christ, should have at least some rudimentary form/amount of righteousness (is Paul quoting from the Old Testament here?)
@@bubbastill2040 Careful with what, the word of God? I can assure you I have no plan to treat people horrible, torture and/or kill anyone, not burn anyone at the stake or anathematize anyone.
For the sake of a little bit of debate, I'd claim you should rather be careful with your own opinion about what Christianity is or should be about. I'll claim that you are on a path that lead nowhere, if you are attempting to achieve any form of righteousness.Woe to all of us, for we are but sinners, and the only righteousness we will ever find, is the righteousness of God.
Paul is quoting from the Psalms in the verse above, but the message is not reduced to the old testament, but is universal in the bible:
Romans 15:3,4
For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me…
Mark 10:18
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God
Romans 3:4
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
Psalm 143:2
Do not bring Your servant into judgment, for no one alive is righteous before You.
Romans 3:11
There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
1 John 1:8
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
@@elvenkind6072 You and the other people in this thread are not telling the whole truth in quoting "there is none righteous"and the whole truth is the way of salvation brought forth by Jesus in His teachings and commandments essentially through forgiveness and repentance. You can quote the whole Bible to me and it won't change that fact.My creds are these:raised in the baptist and church of Christ churches in Texas, nearly committed suicide at 16 (that's where there non-Holy Spirit teachings and fear-mongering abuse led me ,I was beaten between recitations of scripture),had a hell experience, and genuinely turned to God and Christ, had the baptism in the holy spirit at age 21 in 1986,accepted the truth of reincarnation (which Jesus and the disciples taught) in 1987.I have experienced 8 of the primary 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit, have had hundreds of prophetic dreams, had healings and intanteneous healings to the point where I don't get sick now/anymore,worked 12 years for the Salvation Army as a counselor, helping alcoholics and vets get and stay sober (a lot of them were catholics and baptists who were abused and brought up with the inculcation of a cruel ,conditionally loving, vengeful God and not the truth that "God is Love"JOHN 4:18.I forgive you for your heartlessness and ignorance, but I'd suggest you fix those
@@bubbastill2040 Heartlessness and ignorance? I can only assume you misunderstand me somehow, projecting bad life experiences on me etc. since I have no ill intentions with what I've said, however that seem like a common thing on the internet when the tone of voice and facial expressions are excluded from conversations. I've only quoted the bible, and you seem to be attacking me for this? So then I quoted more bible, since you seemed to think that what I mentioned in my first post had to do with the old testament, but it don't. And then you react by listing up all your achievements as a Christian, and then these personal attacks, as if you don't like the bible very much. I can't see anything in what you have written that make me think the bible is wrong and you are right. Specially the idea of reincarnation is not commonly thought to be part of orthodox Christianity, but something most would agree to be a heretical idea. I don't mean anything bad by saying that, I'm only sharing my own view.
Personally I think it's a liberating thing to give up on my own struggles to become something or the other, and instead work to get closer to God, through the Holy Spirit. The less importance I place on my own life, and the less I think about myself, the better things seem to become.
Hope you'll have a nice day, are at good health in both body and spirit and are led on the narrow path by the Spirit of Christ.

I agree with this. I've encountered so many people who live selfish lives & use others for their own personal gains. You see it at work, family, relationships, social media, etc...A lot of people use a mask to fool others until it slips & their true colors come out. I have noticed that people who work on loving & respecting themselves, in return give that energy to others.

I remember my grandparents were friends with everyone in our village, they didn't dislike anyone. Now days envious, witch craft lovers are even running our tribal government. That's why our fellow tribal members never are able to improve their lives and continue to live in poverty and on welfare.
@Hans Moleman Productions My village is right on the Mexico border. I have lost a nephew to the cartel. And many years ago a black man came to our village sent by the cartel, to kill one of my cousins ,they ended up shooting each other dead. The cartel makes meth about four or five miles from our border. There are no jobs out here, so natives work for the cartel, mostly letting the cartel leave their bales of drugs in their homes. But if they get caught , the cartel punishes them. We have also had decades of human traffic. People literally walk in your yard and help themselves to your fruit trees and water. Still happening today. My sister ran drugs for a good twenty years , before that she hauled people and now she sits on our Tribal Legislative Council.

I feel the same. After all these years, and I'm still shocked and appalled by human greed and cruelty as well as genocide and environmental devastation. And the worst part is that most of us unwittingly play a role in it. This explains, why whenever in the movies, we see an antagonist whose goal is to wipe out humanity I think "They're right. We have to go for the good of the planet". Sometimes I wish I wasn't human and I would be willing to go down with humanity or if I survive, refuse to call myself that. This explains why some people are attached to animals. Still, at least my shock and that fact proves the human race is not without redeeming qualities and can change.
@@flynnwhimster5371 I think it's our society that brings out the worst in us. I don't agree that we're fundamentally not good, we all have both "good" and "bad" within us. This is so true. It’s good to hear you say this because I could feel in my heart that there are a lot of people in this world who are not good. It’s even more evident in today’s society. It saddens me to see what is happening in the world today. So many blind people who can see. It makes me almost feel like it’s hopeless to live in a better world. Or leave my daughter in a better world than what I had. What happened to so many people?
Life is day to day choices, we're not always going to make the best choices, but we need to try to while we're here.
Salute to this elder brother, i agree completely!!!
So hard for me to understand- I have defaulted to Good my entire life, and have never understood those who don't default to Good. I have always found it easier to be good than to not.

So brings humility. And we all have these opposites & some behaviors are instinctive like caring for our family. Often one sees it clearer in orthodox religion or when ppl somehow feel superior to others. Because of opposites was told to look at that which entices and say not now. I'm curious as to exactly why the People (supposedly "christian") who came over to North America from England saw fit to relieve the Indians of their land and in many cases, their lives. In doing so, they forfeited ancient wisdom that was collected, distilled, and passed down through time - possibly from centuries of time. It would certainly supplement the idea that man has a nature that is desperately in need of restraint. The animal hunts the enlightened and wise being. Jesus said: "Why call me good, there are none good but God." I think the Indians are right.

According to the canonical Gospels, Christ’s death on the Cross was at the hands of unrighteous men. The real gospel is He was vindicated by God (not crucified by Him) who raised Him from the dead. The true nature of God is revealed when Christ prays from the Cross for those who unjustly crucified Him, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24)

The teachings of jesus however, as can be found in the earliest books, like the Q bible (or Q scriptures) are pure and true, and came well before the bible we know of today as well as other books from the bible that were taken out.
@@Omni_Shambles Theres a God and theres a devil. It takes awareness to sort it out. Arguing that you cant tell up from down will take you nowhere. Discernment exists.
It's really not the same. Christianity teaches that many neutral or good deeds are sins, that if we don't commit bad deeds we will be punished for all eternity. Christianity upholds faith as the greatest virtue, and wisdom as the greatest vice. Christianity is part of the problem in humanity which the Navajo teachings recognize.
@VayaConDios That's really the difference, isn't it?
The Navajo teach that it is in our nature to do harm, and we should use our mind and heart to see it and stop it.
But Christianity teaches that we are wrong simply for existing, and that we must atone for what someone else did to us by CAUSING harm.
You are a wise man. I like to hear your words. You are so proud, Natives so proud. Navajos so proud. Like it. 🙋♂️
Most people aren't evil but they have smaller character defects like being lazy, selfish, shallow, mediocre, fearful, fickle and petty. Those are the qualities to fight against throughout life.
What is wrong with being mediocre?
theres nothing wrong with being lazy... dont be such a d*ckhead.
define " evil" first
Lots of truth and wisdom in these words. He is right. If left alone, our natural instincts and urges are not that good.
