Hey Ed - really happy to see this - prior to watching I'd no clue as to how to get started and now feel confident to give it a try. One of the reasons I've not bothered to do any research into HA on Unraid previously is we've very few IoT devices, and those that we have are on a no interent VLAN to stop them from phoning home. So it would be great if you could do a video about your HA set up - the devices you find useful and how you get them to do useful work without sending all your data to China, or anywhere else for that matter. Thanks!
Great video, I started HA a month ago, currently running it on docker in unraid and Ive had a really hard time setting everything to work LOL. Finally got everything but eventually will migrate to HA in a VM A Video on how to migrate existing HA from docker to VM would be great Thanks for the videos
Ed, yet another excellent (and timely) video tutorial! Just starting my HA adventure so this came at the right moment in time for me. Please add more HA content as you move forward!
Hello Ed, I'm new to Unraid and set up my first servers this summer. Had no problems so far because of your masterful instructions - big THANKS to you!❤ Currently I am planning my home assistant, so your “Home Assistant inabox” comes in handy 🥰 Like others, I would love to see some home assistant setup videos in the future if possible. Liked and subscribed 👍👍👍 greetings from germany Bernie
I am just getting in to home assistant and would love any tutorials you feel would help a newbie get up and running. I have 60+ IoT devices at this point, and really need to get a handle on all of them. Alexa just barely does the job, and I want to expand into other areas that dont work with that ecosystem. You have been fundamental to my understanding of unraid, and cannot thank you enough for your time and effort over the years.
Personally, I would like to see how to set up a stable and relatively safe foundation for HA. For example, with SMB Share, Remote access combined with NGINX, setting up an MQTT broker, MariaDB, etc. Essentially, a solid foundation from which we can build further ourselves. I would prefer to see a remote access setup that is relatively secure explained in detail.
I just listened to your interview with Joshua last week. I am getting into HA assistant on unraid now as a result. Anything you are able to share is appreciated. I am looking at ordering some additional hardware for my home for switches, receptacles and power monitoring. My thermostat is already compatible with HA.
Very cool Ed! I wonder if this could be modified to monitor a VM on another server? I was thinking about setting up a second unraid server. Something like this could be a cool high-availability type setup. That way if there was an issue with the whole server, it could boot up the second VM
I may be missing something, but is there any reason not to just run it as the VM and don't use Docker for it at all? I followed another guide for this recently, using the official qcow2 image from HA and running it purley as a VM under unraid and it works a treat. This seems to be complicating it more than needed, unless there is a good reason to have the Docker element as well? It really wasn't hard to add the image in unraid and run it as a VM.
I was wondering the same. The install proces is a lot easier for starters for sure. Just as easy as running it in docker mode but than with the added benefits of a vm. That said, the main advantage is the check is the vm is running. If not the auto start option is great. I’ve only had to manually start the HA vm once or twice though. I’m wondering if I can make the docker work with an already existing HA VM.
The additional ease, particularly for new users to unraid, to deploy this by just clicking install from the community app store, it means that any unraid user can fire up HA, within an HAOS VM with a single click and not have to really watch any tutorials.
Great solution! Thank you. Whats the best way for Homeassistant in this manner to detect and support compatible devices on other network vlan's / subnets?
Deleted the VM, and the Docker app, tried again, but there seems to be no way I can connect to the Web UI. The docker app does correctly point to the same IP I see when I open up the VNC to the HA console, but I can't get to it. Pings and Web both time out.
Hi guys, same problem here. The webui is getting the wrong ip. Go under VMs tab, to Home assistant, and start VM Console(VNC). There you can see the correct ip and correct it
Nice Video! As I run Home assistant on unraid for years, can you explain how to integrate an existing VM into this? Also how would you backup HASS data and config?
Is there any advantage to this container over manually importing the qcow? It does provide a sort of watch dog with that auto restart feature, which is nice. I already have the HA VM running on my unraid server though.
Can your HAinabox supprt multiple versions of Home Assistant running on unraid? I have three instances of HA running on my unraid server that control my families houses. I like the ease of your system and the auto restart capability...fantastic!!
Great solution - another use case for Docker container: install VMs :-). Two questions: Why do you use USB20 instead of USB30 and why VirtIO instead of SATA?
Not sure if I missed if somewhere else, but what is the reason for going to a VM instead of Docker for Home Assistant? I'm learning about Unraid and planning to migrate away from Hyper-V, and from my research, docker container for services are much more efficient.
Much appreciated work! However, running into the following error after having Home Assistant up and running for a couple of days. I am no longer able to access the Web GUI and so I looked into the VM's logs and found the following error: Domain id=3 is tainted: custom-ga-command. Would much appreciate any help to resolve and get the Web GUI access back!
Ed, would you be so kind as to recommend some models of bulbs, switches, outlets which you may recommend? Also, do we need a bluetooth adatpter or things to go with this?
I was able to follow your video and quickly set up my Home Assistant devices. I think it would be helpful to make a guide on how to access the files in the VM, specifically I need to access the configuration.yaml file but I'm not sure how to access the virtual disk of the HomeAssistant virtual machine
Is there an option to SSH into the VM itself or via VNC. Attempts to connect via both options fail (ssh on 22222 or 22). I'm trying to troubleshoot bluetooth (via the motherboard) and USB Manager shows it as attached but I have no way of veryifying the that and I'm not seeing anything being discovered.
Hmm... tried it on 2 different Unraid installations and both fail. On one it finds the IP but it is not accessible and on the second unraid it doesn't find the IP at all.
Would love some more home assistant videos. I'm currently trying to setup a reverse proxy but seems to be struggling. Also trying to setup mqtt broker within home assistant to be accessible through the internet but also struggling with this.
Tried three times to install but the issue i am having it is failing to extract the image and at the end it says missing files: /domains/Home Assistant/vdisk1.img
I am having nothing but hassle with this. I've been at it for like 2hrs now, and the HA install is bad. Restarting the VM shows in rescue mode? Maintenance I can't get to work, ctrl d to continue ends in CLI not starting? Ive uninstalled and reinstalled, same issues...
Finally got it. If you're getting in rescue mode, catch it in VNC and pick a different option. If you're having a "waiting for CLI to be ready" type "login" and hit enter. If "ha >" comes after type "banner"
Anybody running into an issue where the browser keeps getting forwarded/redirected from your Local IP with the Internally mapped docker IP? I'm probably running my network a bit janky. But can't access the WebUI yet.
Hi. The container is just an installer for homeassistant as the config files will not be in the appdata. The home assistant is Hassio running in a vm. So you can edit the files from in the webui of homeassistant www.home-assistant.io/docs/configuration/
I am getting an error on install: downloading the Home Assistant vdisk from the official source extracting the vdisk to /config/vdisk1.qcow2.xz (removing the .xz)... Error: Failed to extract the .qcow2.xz file
Saw the Home Assistant VM pop up on the Unraid app store and had a feeling we were about to get a new video! Love it!

It is so awesome you take the time to build these dockers. ❤
Home Assistant now set up on my HP MiniDesk... Thank you, Ed. I now must find other things to get this party really going.
Amazing! Let’s see if I did my HA correctly.
Spaceinvader please make more videos of this. Thanks for everything you do
Great tutorial! and to the point as usual. Love it!
I love the clarity of your tutorials! Touch on custom HA dashboards if you do indeed make some HA setup vids please sir. Thank you!

Yes please sir, more HA vids. Specifically around configs, dashboards, and HACs plugins? Potential integrations. ❤
Same. I'm new to HA but this loaded a HA without a config editor and cant find the yaml for the life of me.
Good video Ed! Thanks for sharing it with us!💖👍😎JP
Great vid! Can't wait to try it out.

Will the VM be able to access e.g. zigbee dongles plugged in via USB?
Probably a stupid question but wanna know before considering set up
i would like a video setting up security cameras on this home assistant setup!
Please do more HA videos using Unraid.
This was great and super easy to setup. Thank you!
Is anyone able to use Node RED with this? It will install but won't start.
GUI to container webpage doesn't seem to be working on first install. You may have to edit the VM and change from virbr0 to br0

Similar issue. Keeps replacing my Local IP with the Internally mapped docker IP in the browser.
Looking into a solve now. I'll post if I figure it out.
Got it licked.
@@HannibalBarca218bc Can you share on the support forums? There are others there with the same issue.
@Theexplorographer absolutely. I'll try and figure out the proper location in both the unraid discords, the reddit, and maybe the project page.
how do you manage yaml files thru the VM ?
Is your docker file on git so I can see how it all works in the background?
What if I already have the docker HA and want to move to the VM HA? Does anyone have a quick how-to for doing this?
full backup and store it to another safe place, stop the original docker, build the new one and restore with your BACKUP file
how to update Home Assistant Core Update? it just keep saying installing for the passed hour
can i use this with an existing ha vm?

I followed this setup and it does not work in bridge network mode. i had to use host.
Where do I find the config files to edit. I checked appdata but do not see anything.
Hi. The container is just an installer for homeassistant as the config files will not be in the appdata. The home assistant is Hassio running in a vm. So you can edit the files from in the webui of homeassistant www.home-assistant.io/docs/configuration/
Would like to see Unraid integration to HA, restarting VMs, running dockers, checking load and similar
NFC tag scan to turn on gaming VM would be cool thing to do
FYI I had to open and update the vm to get it to launch the first time.
