  • Al, Jimmy, and Harry Ritz were stars of vaudeville, Broadway, and feature films for 20th Century Fox and Universal. The Ritz Brothers (and especially their unofficial leader Harry) were among the most influential comedians of the early 20th century, inspiring the likes of Mel Brooks, Jerry Lewis, Danny Kaye, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Norman Lear, Soupy Sales, and many others.

Thanx muchly for sharing this little treasure!
I love the Ritz Brothers. Have since I first saw them loooooong long ago.
Shame we can't get more clips, and full movie and tv footage of their wonderful brand of madness, and their great comedic timing, and fabulous dance moves.
RIP, darling Harry, Al, and Jimmy, and thanx so so very very very much, gentle men, for the magic, music, and memories.
(edit bc my stupidphone cannot spell properly 🙄 )

Saw one of their movies when I was kid and thought they were funnier than the Marx brothers (who I love, too). Seeing this, they are as funny as I remember and now understand why Mel Brooks is my favorite director 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

This is fantastic. So many people believe that the Ritz Brothers were nobodies, only because their _movie_ career failed. We still need a big, professionally produced documentary about the Ritz Brothers, perhaps their star should rise again after that.

Me too, my friend. Sadly, The Ritz Brothers were underrated because no one who they were but I did seen this movie called "The Gorilla" and they were outstanding.

They were great. All the shtick and them some. The big surprise for me was to see these television gems. I remember the films but I didn't know they were still killing it years later.

I rememeber when the Ritz Bros. were namechecked on "Leave it to Beaver,' but I wasn't clear on the context of the time. The joke was that Beaver didn't realize the Ritz Bros. were comedians and saw their version of the Three Musketeers, and tried to pass it off for a book report. But I don't know if the joke was --he was too young to know them, or were their star so faded and forgotten, you don't blame Beaver for not knowing them, as the audience had forgotten too.

I never met Al or Jimmy, but I did meet Harry. He was a friend of my wife's aunt and uncle. A very funny man. The only comedian that I know of who could count with his eyes!

You can see how the Ritz's inspired so many overcooked New York comics like Jerry Lewis, Berle, Caesar, and Silvers. Lots of yelling, lots of pulling faces.

I may have posted earlier. I also think Howard Morris was influenced by Harry Ritz; remember his character Ernest T. Bass on The Andy Griffith Show? One of my great Hollywood thrills was to have met Harry Ritz once and he jabbered with me at a Deli on West Olympic Blvd. in L.A. in 1982. RIP X 3

Thanks for posting this. I'd never known about them but I certainly know their influence. It's interesting to the see these predecessors that were barely caught on film. It makes me wonder about those that influenced them and were never captured.

Mel Brooks i will always adore. I finally watched my first film featuring the Ritz Brothers. I could only watch about 20 minutes. Maybe its the fact they all look alike but not funny quite forgettable. The Stooges and the Marx Bros. Learned early on a trio needs 3 distinct characters not 3 Larry Fines.

Well I’ll get straight to the point: do you think you are a good person? You might have thought about it before, or you might have not. But your answer is probably yes. Now the rest of this might get personal, but remember, I can’t see-or hear you reading this, so don’t worry. Now let’s have a look at the Ten Commandments. You don’t have to believe in the Bible to take this quiz:
Have you ever stolen something? Yes no
Have you ever looked with lust? Yes no
Have you ever used the Lord/Jesus/Christ/God’s Name as a swear word? Yes no
Have you ever told a lie? Yes no
You probably answered Yes to, at least, two of those. There are six more. A bit of math would tell you that (10 divided by 2 =5) , out of the Ten Commandments, on average you probably answered Yes to five of them. Do you still think you are a good person? Now I’m doing this because I care about you. You could die at any moment. Your heart may stop right now. And I’d like to see all of you in Heaven. I don’t want you to go to…to...to...to…what was it again? Was it perhaps hell? We have all sinned. Nobody is perfect or worthy in God’s sight. In fact, the only way our sins could be forgiven, was if we offered sacrifices practically every day. We all sin every day. We look with lust, we lie, we blaspheme, we swear and we steal without giving it a second thought. Imagine all those sin and guilt offerings we would have to offer… but we don’t have to. Because God sent His one and only Son Jesus, to die for us on the cross as THE sin offering so that whoever BELIEVES in Him will be forgiven and have eternal life. He took all the sins that will ever be on Himself. He paid the price; i.e. He’s the Person who paid the fine for the stack of offences on the Judges(God’s) desk, so He could let you go. That is how great His Love and Mercy for you is. He has no reason to spare you, apart from His abounding Love and Mercy. You just have to accept His forgiveness, repent, get baptised and turn to Him. You have been warned. Do not reject Him.
