The sign-off for KTHI-TV from October 14, 1983. At this point in time, the station changed affiliations from ABC to NBC. The station would become KVLY in 1995.
The version of the "SSB" played here (obviously from a record, based on the scratches whose duration suggests 33 1/3 RPM) was from the U.S. Army Band, c. 1960's, and was also used on sign-ons and -offs for other stations, including New York's WPIX and WNBC (albeit each with different video).

they replaced them with local scenes of Mankato, MN, including a time-lapse of a sunset, firworks, and a kid holding a american flag (also seen on a studio 12 commerical)
This reminds me of the Sign-off of OETA in Oklahoma City. However, they don't play the American National Anthem. They show a montage of an F-15 while doing a alternate rendition of Reagan's speach of the Challenger disaster. To elaborate; at the end it says "I put up my hand, and touch the face of God."
That’s not a speech from Reagan that you here on the OETA sign off. Where you hear i put out my hand and touch the face of god is from the poem called high flight. High flight was written by a person from the roil Canadian Air Force. I think Reagan used those words in the speech that you minchened. However, he was not the first to use those words.
Awesome good ol F4's of the Happy Hooligans. Man those were some beautiful aircraft!

KTHI-TV became an NBC station August 22, 1983. So this is from close to two months after the switch.

Sweet stuff! I like this one even better than the recent one from the station as KVLY.
10/14/1983.Two Months short after becoming an NBC Affiliate & also sending its ABC Affiliate to WDAY Channel 6.
Prairie Falls KFME Opening (April 11, 2004)
"KTHI-TV is owned and operated by Spokane Television, Incorporated".

Now KVLY since 5/1/1995.Abbreviates "ValLeY".
the same music KEYC uses when they sign-off (they still do that)
Got this confused for a moment with WTHI - which is Terre Haute, IN.
I can see how that could happen.
Abbreviates "Tower HIgh".

How come it went into fuzz mood at 2:19 does anybody know?
The transmitter was turned off; its referred to in TV terms as a carrier cut.
Of course you speak of "High Flight."
Do they use the accompanying film with scenes of Washington, DC?
If you have a copy, think you can try to post it?
