s&k music is better in my opinion anyway its same game just split in 2. S3K-->SK-->S3 that my opinion. Sk3 is long, 3 chars 16 emeralds, all bonus, super/hyper and more
The S3 title screen music wasn't exactly the best,it was just the invincibility music. Besides is that really the most bizarre thing about the S3&K title screen?
The music from Classic Collection sounds oddly nostalgic, the compression makes it feel like an early flash game Missed opportunity to include s3 air tho
Wow, I forgot just how different the Knuckles path was after playing as Sonic for years! Interesting how they attempted to make the soundtrack more complex in the prototype with the addition of extra sound channels. I can see why they simplified things somewhat in the final release though. Oftentimes those details get obscured by sound effects. Interesting comparison!
@@juangutierrez5400 and I love it. It really bugged me when I emulated the rom from the genesis version and it didn't sound as I remembered as a child.
Gotta be honest. I'm a little surprised that the GameCOM "version" from _Sonic Jam_ isn't in this list. I'm also surprised that _Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited_ isn't on here, even though it's unofficial. I wasn't thrilled about the big download size, considering it's just a glorified _Sonic 3 & Knuckles_ emulator with extras*, but after actually playing it, I was genuinely impressed. It does one thing, and it does it _extremely_ well. * It's an emulator in the same way _Mega Man Legacy Collection_ is an emulator. Multiple engines running at one time with on-the-fly patches and other gewgaws.
Hearing the sound effects in the Saturn port put a big, dumb grin on my face. I have fond memories of Sonic Jam, even if it is just a collection of Mega Drive games and miscellaneous material.
sonic 3k (via air i just dont like 4:3 in sonic 3) and knuckles sonic 2 is my second favorite (the special stages really drag it down) then sonic unleased then sonic 1 (due to how modable it is) and sonic generations
Why do some of the Saturn sound effects sound like they were recorded off the original game using a cassette recorder and microphone? It's almost like they're being played from another room.
the Genesis soundchip is unique. this is why some sfx are weird sounding on the Saturn. Also, they had to make the S3 port on the Saturn from square one
Thanks, @retrosutra - that was a wild ride! For kicks, let's draw on some cherished memories of the 16-bit console era and see if I get nostalgic or get disturbed. I played the hell out of all the Genesis Sonic games on original hardware, but for the ports and emulations I must trust this video. The following does not necessarily reflect the views of this station and it's management. Genesis: we begin at the beginning. Loaded with quirky charm and attitude, the Sega Genesis was a good bit of kit. Although SNES was technologically superior, hard work pays off. Clever programmers pushed themselves and the hardware to give players the scaling, rotation, and transparency effects the hardware was literally incapable of doing while clever marketing pushed Genesis as the cool, sexy, affordable sports & action rig with the twice-as-fast mascot (and CPU) that "does what Nintendon't." Featuring the Yamaha YM2612 six-channel frequency-modulation synthesizer chip as the main noisemaker (famously utilized by Yuzo Koshiro's banging Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack), Genesis is capable of generating great music and SFX, but struggles to reproduce digitized recordings, especially voices. Verdict: Nostalgia. I loved my 8-lb Genesis / Sega CD / 32X monstrosity and wish I still had it. Sonic The Hedgehog 3: What an awesome game this was to play when it was new! Even at the time, felt like the scene with the airship bombing you sounded a bit "off", like it was trying to fit too many sounds in at once and I also noticed some (forgivable) stutter in heavy, fast action moments. The latter issue was helped by cleaning the cartridge and slot connectors. No; probably not. But we felt like it helped. Verdict: Nostalgia. Windows 95: They got the SFX pretty close! While I miss the stereo effect of the trademark ring sounds, the bombing/Eggman scene and other areas with a lot of sound layering were 'more right' than the original. The music was way off and took me back to when home internet was computers literally screaming at each-other on the telephone and you wanted Enter Sandman on your homepage but you didn't want it to take literally all day to cache and start playing so it is was all about and what the heck was that Knuckles theme? Graphics did pretty well, but not perfect; there was a nasty glitch-flicker in the Get Blue Spheres stages when you turned. Verdict: Mildly disturbing and the wrong kind of nostalgia. Sega Saturn: Now, the reverse: Sega's very own Saturn got the music right and the SFX way wrong; they sound compressed and muddy, but at least the rings are in stereo. I'm dreading hearing the battery/Eggman scene! ... Oh, that was simply dreadful; it sounded like declaring war on the tropical ocean by blowing a large (but somehow electronic) conch shell while rhythmically hitting the water with palm fronds. At least the graphics seem spot-on. Verdict: Moderately disturbing. Nintendo DS: Now the SFX go the other way: instead of muddy, they are tinny and hissy. The stereo separation on the rings seems narrower, not far enough to the left and right, The music loses almost all punch on both the high and low ends. The battery/Eggman scene feels like the bombing ran out of sound channels to mix properly and a lot of effect was lost, but then Eggman's SFX overlapped on top of each-other like there were too many channels playing at once and it became almost a terrifying wail. Graphics unremarkable again. Verdict: Disturbing and disappointing, "Nintendon't". Genesis Beta: Oh, my; that title screen. Well yeah, it's going to be different than the release. Wow, frozen Knuckles who turns blue. Huh. Neat. SFX and music are familiar, ofc, but the ring sound is pretty much all on the right channel. The Angel Island music almost sounds better, and 'fades behind' the Battery/Eggman scene more smoothly! Eggman's laughter/wail/siren is a friegtening mechanical droning sound, and you feel like he's going to come saw you to pieces. I like it. I laughed at what looked like Tail's picking up Sonic in a celebratory bear hug at level's ends, THERE'S THAT WEIRD KNUCKLES MUSIC, AGAIN! Verdict: Nostalgic, and a good kind of disturbing on those Genesis Sonic 3 & Knuckles: I mean, I always preferred the original, "just 3" Knuckles / miniboss music, and I actually would have preferred if they used 3's musics during 3's levels and the 3&K musics during the 3&K levels. Maybe a ROM-hack or some port could/did create my dream S3&K game, but the full original game is pretty awesome and now I think it's time to go download Mania on Steam. Verdict: Nostalgia 3 & Knuckles FTW. Thanks! ~Foxxe
