Personnel : Count Basie (p), Freddie Green (gt), Eddie Jones (b), Sonny Payne (dr), Snooky Young, Thad Jones, John Anderson, Joe Newman (tp), Al Grey, Henry Coker, Benny Powell (tb), Marshal Royal (as), Frank Wess (ts,fl), Frank Foster, Billy Mitchell (ts), Charlie Fowlkes (bs), Joe Williams (vo) Location & Date : NYC, Nov 22, 1959
Pretty amazing that Joe Williams is able to sing with such soul while basically not moving at all. His shoulders barely even twitched before he and Count went over to greet Ed once the number was done.
This swings HARD, FAST and TIGHT. The closest musician/performer that can approach this classic jump style, live with a full orchestra, is the one and only Brian Setzer. And the flute solo, that is the epitome of COOL.
God, he's singing all over the place except along with the melody line. I haven't heard phrasing this bad since the last time I listened to Ella Fitzgerald butcher a song.
The Count, Big Joe and a swingin' orchestra! Go guys go!
I had lunch with Joe in Vegas in ‘95.What a guy!
I love hearing Joe Williams singing the blues.
That's Sonny Payne on drums, one of the reasons the band swung so hard.
Frank Wess on Flute. Is that Freddy Green on guitar??
Man can they cook or what?

Man, do I miss them. Such wonderful music and that JW voice, nothing like it or him. He was a good friend in the 60’s and 70’s.

So much more to these guys than their work on triangle with the Bonzos.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I am assuming it was Frank Wess on flute.

Pete Johnson
Why is the tempo of this song so fast? Was it because it was on TV? It's as if the Sullivan producer said you have 2 minutes!
God, he's singing all over the place except along with the melody line. I haven't heard phrasing this bad since the last time I listened to Ella Fitzgerald butcher a song.
Too fast in my humble opinion
They had to make Ed Sullivan's Twitter 2:20.
Homie looks bored af
