In the worst case, yes. Ideally he would send a single unit forward to see what I had before committing in the first place. Otherwise he is letting me snowball. They really lost because they kept taking bad fights. If they massed more units in their base they would have been fine.

One important "level up" is when you learn you can just avoid your opponent's army. Let your buildings go and build a competing force.
