Ian, bro, I've got to tell you. You are single handedly responsible for getting me into leatherwork. I have watched, seriously, at least 30 hours of your content, and that is an underestimate. I have learned so much from you. Today, I was hanging out in my local leather shop, making another unreasonably expensive purchase, and learning everything I could from the staff of the store, and someone came in needing some leatherwork done, and I received my first commission. You're responsible for that, Ian. Thank you. So, you and I have discussed getting light tans/browns before, and on your suggestion I have successfully used antique gels, but there is something about them, maybe it is the finish they leave... or, maybe they tend to leave a kind of blackness, it is hard to quantify, but a light tan with an antique gel side by side to an oil dye... the oil dye looks and feels like real leather... haha, I don't know how to put it. But today I purchased a similar airbrush kit to yours, again, solely because you made me aware of the concept of airbrushing leather dye. I've been watching some air brush videos the last few days, re-familiarizing myself with airbrushes (it has been 25 years since I last used one) and I felt like I was up to speed, and began looking for videos about airbrushing leather dye... this is the only one on UA-cam (I'd previously watched this vid at least once). You're a freaking gem, man. Keep up the GOOD work.
Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your videos and as a novice leatherworker have saved many hours of fuss and error due to your detailed, thoughtful and concise tutorials. Thank-you! I spend many hours perusing leatherworker.net forums and reading, but sometimes you need a visual point of reference. I've watched every one of your videos and wish you the best with your business! Cheers.
I bought a $100+ Air Brush had it 2 years. It looked too complicated to use & clean. (I donated it to charity.) After seeing your video, I WISH I WOULD HAVE KEPT IT!!! I never thought of using it on my Leather work. You are truly amazing! This was an excellent Video. Hello from Idaho, USA
Ian, I recently subscribed to your channel, and am very appreciative for the things you teach and demonstrate regarding leather-working. I've just finished watching your video on airbrushing; a process I am very familiar with as an artist. You were discussing the mediums that can be sprayed through the airbrush, and seemed somewhat uncertain about the thicker, paint type materials you may like to use. The solution is simple! Use whatever sort of thinner is appropriate, and gradually look for the viscosity you need. Then you will simply have to layer your spray coat by coat until you achieve the desired effect.
I also just wanted to let you know that your videos were very helpful to me. One of the only instances of any case touching on stenciling for leather applications. I'm gonna give the airbrush a try. A dauber was resulting in fuzzy lines.
Helloo, I was wondering once you have applied the dye to the leather from using the airbrush, do you need to use something to seal it to stop the dye from fading etc?
thanks for video. very informative for me as a new in Leatherwork. subscribed/liked. one question: de paint [12:04] "Eco-Flo", I want to try to buy it, where I can find it? am living in Netherlands. am busy to learn painting leather with Airbrush. am planning to buy a compressor and a Airbrush. busy to find out which one is best for me. thanks in advance
For paints: Add 2-Thin Acrylic Paint Thinner to thin paints. Use 1/3 parts paint to 2/3 parts 2-Thin. This will thin the paint enough to use in an airbrush. The shade will lighten as it's diluted, so you'll want to do thinner coats and more of them to achieve full color, if that's what you're going for!
Ayup, Ian what type of dye are you using to spray the sunburst shading?.. is it water based paint (Like eco flo "cova color") - or water based dye (Like eco flo "waterstain") or maybe standard oil/alcohol based dye like Fiebings.... I just got an airbrush and am ok with spraying but very cofused with what dye to spray, without clogging the airbrush or damaging the o-ring seals with IPA ...or having my design rub off. Also what finish do you apply to keep the colours safe from wear and weather? Do you spray it on or rub t on? Hope you can help because my crust is done right in! ..and I can't afford to experiment with dyestuffs and airbrush components because I'm poor. Pete
which airbrush kit did you buy? I want to get one, but I'm new to leather working, and I've never used an airbrush, so I don't want to end up getting one that doesn't work for dying leather. I also don't want to spend a crazy amount of money on one, especially since I don't know if I'll like airbrushing leather. I just think it would be really useful to at least have the option to be able to airbrush my leather pieces. So, my question again, which kit did you buy?
Ian, so I've finally unboxed my airbrush kit, the same one as yours, and there is no regulator on my compressor... just checked back on this vid, and yours is the same unit, but your water filter has the regulator on top, as all others seem to have. Any ideas on how to use an airbrush compressor without a regulator? Haha!
Hi Ian. Thank you for all your very informative videos! I love how meticulous your work is and how perfect everything turns out!! I just bought an airbrush compressor and brush. I was wondering, do you need to use a respirator mask if you're using water based dyes? Or is just a painter's mask ok. Please let me know your opinion. Thank you!
Hi Ian I'm just starting out in leatherworking. So I'm not planning on stamping my work just yet. I noticed that on the 1st sunburst project you had a stamp of a rabbit. I have a UA-cam channel with a rabbit logo. In the future I am planning on putting up some leather items I have made but for the life of me I can't find a good rabbit likeness. That was until I saw your stamped project in this video. Can I ask where you got it from. Love the videos buddy there extremely helpful. Thanks Jason.
How durable is the airbrush dyeing coz i feel like the colors wont be submersed deep into the leather like incase of drum dyeing if done properly. Thus i feel like the colors will fade off in due time or worse case scenario it starts leaking and gets on you. Thanks.
They should be fine if you're sealing them with Fiebing's Resolene or Eco Flo's Shene product. I'm sure there are others, those are just the one's that I use.

Just a tip on the Eco Flo, you can thin it with airbrush medium. I use the same for acrylic paints.
What's airbrush medium?
@@Traderhood it's a clear liquid you can add pigment or paints to that thin it enough to airbrush with without breaking down or altering the color.
I also just wanted to let you know that your videos were very helpful to me. One of the only instances of any case touching on stenciling for leather applications. I'm gonna give the airbrush a try. A dauber was resulting in fuzzy lines.
Thanks bud, I appriciate your taking the time to teach me how to use one of these.

Could you help with what to do about bubble rings that are left on the leather please?
What is the best way to clean the airbrush after dying it?
Hi. What Airbrush system are you currently using?
For paints: Add 2-Thin Acrylic Paint Thinner to thin paints. Use 1/3 parts paint to 2/3 parts 2-Thin. This will thin the paint enough to use in an airbrush. The shade will lighten as it's diluted, so you'll want to do thinner coats and more of them to achieve full color, if that's what you're going for!

Great video, Very informative. Nice leather work too
very informative vid thanks

Thanks ,you are the Man !
Hi, Ian. Where do you place mahogany on the light/dark spectrum? It's the colour I'm having the most difficulty getting consistent results.
Very Informational, Thanks.
Ian what kind of finish or sealer do you use after brushing the project to keep the dye from fading off
Is it possible to put Super Sheen or Eco-flow gloss/matt finishes on using an airbrush?

thats easy, step one is go to the shop and buy a regulator... step two is put it on your compressor!
You can use a spare car wheel as an air supply if it suits your air requirement!
I’ll be sure to remember that in case I need to airbrush anything in the zombie apocalypse!
Hi Ian, may I ask what pressure you set your compressor to? I created a piece a while ago and found the pressure to be quite difficult to get right.
Hi Ian. Thank you for all your very informative videos! I love how meticulous your work is and how perfect everything turns out!! I just bought an airbrush compressor and brush. always use a full respirator with an airbrush
Thank you for your quick response :-) I have to go into the city tomorrow, I will pick up a respirator then.

It’s not a stamp I carved it
Ian Atkinson that's brilliant well out of my skill set at the moment. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Jason calaz, stop doubting yourself and get into it! And post up your progress on your channel. :D
Airbrush on chrome tanned leather?
What kind of airbrush do you recommend?
Hey.
Is airbrush dyeing also called aerograph? If not then what is aerograph dyeing. Thanks.
+Juice I think Aerograph is just a brand name.

What airbrush is this?
Is this a specific air brush for leather?
no
Ian Atkinson Can you use paint thinner to clean for alcohol and oil based leather dyes or should you use pure alcohol to clean? Thanks for the video!
