Count me in Father-I’m up for it. Prayers for all the old Irish missionary priests who gave their whole lives to evangelize the world. Viva Cristo Rey!
You're right, Father. I think we are 'losing the conversation' not because we have nothing to say but because the public square no longer UNDERSTANDS the language of faith that we speak. And, crushingly, this is in spite of the fact that many - if not most - of those we are trying to reach (in Ireland at least) have been baptised, confirmed etc in the faith and gone through 14 years of Catholic schooling. How did the leaders of our Church let this happen? Did they not realise that a sea of apostasy lay downstream of the Catholic education that was then (and most probably now) on offer?
I bought a jotter.I am writing down every idea and memory and reflection that occurs to me however trivial and disjointed.I was encouraged to do this by Dr,Holly Ordway, Catholic writer and teacher of 'Creative Writing for Evangelists'.She says that almost anyone can be a writer if they are willing to work hard and grow over time. Writing that shows what is good, true and beautiful in a way that is artistically compelling while presenting the faith as meaningful through the power of imagination. The power of writing for evangelisation is enormous. She shows how to get started and grow in different genres and forms. The first step is to write down ideas, reflections, the village characters we knew. Anything. After ,say, a year we will have a journal full of material, some sensible and some silly. Never mind- at this stage it's for our eyes only. However by constant revision and editing and drafting we may eventually have something for publishing.Maybe it's a personal testimony or devotional piece or short story or poem or even a novel! Ireland needs a cadre of skilled Catholic writers who by weight of numbers and persistence can break through the iron curtain that the mainstream media erects against them.We can't leave it all to David Quinn. If we can't penetrate the Irish Times then what about our local papers. I have never written anything artistically indeed never considered it ....but I'm giving it a go -it will take time. Anyone else up for it ?!
Father, problem is being employed by the church. We already have hundreds of people paid and employed to teach the faith in so called catholic schools. We need to take the faith formation out of schools and into the Parish and into the family. Pope Francis has introduced the ministry of catechist on the back of what the neo catechumenal way
I'm sorry to have to say, that today's institutional Vatican is but a hollow shell; an empty vessel. Absolutely we need renewal, need it badly. However, I simply cannot see the required renewal taking place under any leadership so-called, from the current Vatican. I will not mince my words here and state, straight up, that it is my belief that the present Pope is an Anti-Pope. I admire your work greatly Father Brendan and believe that your words, particularly nuanced as they must be, are very much worth listening to and internalising. Vatican today is like a bus full of passengers, all of whom know the route which must be driven, for them to reach their destination. However, the driver (the Pope), insists on steering the bus in exactly the opposite direction. God bless and protect you. 😉👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@wapitude but do we actually need the Vatican to tell us to preach the faith. We can do that ourselves inside the church. The renewal must come from the the ground up now.
Sorry Father, I couldn't wait until the end of your talk, when are we going to start? OK you have put yourself up there as the leader and indeed a worthy one at that, no pressure, I would certainly be interested not as a paid person but as someone you feels exactly the same as yourself. Now there is just one point I would like to make, you want to start with a deeper understanding of scripture and that is fantastic, I think we should also take a deeper look at modern psychology, the latest thinking in the field of cognitive science. Now before you throw me out, can I mention a few names of people in these fields who I find very interesting, Dr Iain Mc Gilchrist, George Lakoff, Jorden Peterson, Stanley Hauerwas, Fr Ron Rolheiser. In my very humble and uneducated opinion we need to up the game the word I have heard a lot of is we have lost the narritive. The first words Jesus speaks in St john's Gospel is 'What are you looking for'. I got that from Ron Rolheiser by the way, people are looking for very different things today, our parents asked God for the gift of food to feed their families today that hunger is manifested in a different way, we need to connect with that yearning, You made us for yourself Lord, -- you know the rest.
