"I can't see a thing in this helmet!" Mark Hamill (Luke) didn't know that the camera was rolling, and was actually telling Ford (Han) that he literally couldn't see.
THANK YOU!! FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT!!! The Storm Troopers were ordered to let Luke and his friends escape so they can be tracked to Yavin 4!!! I'm tired of all this "Storm Troopers can't shoot" Jokes!
Although, Ringo, I'm not entirely sure if Vader knew that Luke is his son at the time of the Death Star Escape. I know, it is crucial to the plot that he didn't mention it, but don't you think, he would've mentioned it to Obi Wan? With that entire "I hate you!" thing? But I guess we'll never know for sure.
Basically, this happens in almost every other franchise out there. Stormtroopers are the elite troops of the Empire. There's a reason why they're feared.
+GeneralBlackNorway In legends, the stormtroopers that we see in the first scene in A New Hope was actually the 501st. The same troops that killed the Jedi in Operation: Knightfall
Haha that last bit. The whole video tried to give an in-universe explanation as to why they miss but in the end it's all plot armor. Very interesting information about the sensors and other systems inside the helmet though.
It's also worth noting that Luke's line "I can't see a thing in this helmet" actually wasn't scripted. That was actually Mark Hamill complaining to Harrison Ford about the costume when he thought that the cameras had stopped rolling.
Awesome. Loved the whole thing and about plot armor. We all know the Empire would have won. Hey as a suggestion, can you go over the blasters the Storm Troopers and Imperial Army used? I think people knowing some specs on blasters like the E-11 and DLT-19 will help people see some of the other reasons why the Empire missed or could have won the war.
Man,you are the greatest narrator ever. I love how you present your subjects. If you never made this channel i wouldn't be such interested in Star Wars.
Why do they miss? "Because the main characters have Plot Armor" YES!!!! God, finally someone gives the real answer to that never-ending question. It's exactly the same reason the supposed badasses on the other side basically NEVER manage to kill or seriously hurt our heroes, in any film. It's why the ninjas can't kill the heroes, it's why the Decepticons can't kill the heroes, it's why the T-1000 can't kill our heroes, etc, etc. Because that would make for a bad story; that's it, that's all, that's the whole reason!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, sir, for just cutting through the bullshit, for not making up some wildly convoluted nonsense about how the Force itself was reaching out to protect our heroes because of their destinies or whatever.
Note: The Troopers that boarded the Tantive IV - literally the first event in SW cinema history - had no issues hitting the poor plot-armor lacking (and regular armor lacking) Rebel troops onboard.
There's also a fourth reason, after The Rebellion destroyed the First Death Star,The Empire rushed the storm troopers out of the imperial academy(s) so that they could outnumber the rebels. This turned the Stormtroopers into henchmen with no skill, instead of the skilled warriors they once where.
So glad you cleared up a lot of that stuff about them missing. I know they don't, but i'm glad your letting more people know. And while i know they have incredibly superior and advanced technology in the Star Wars universe, but the stormtrooper armour was designed for mass production and therefore needing to be incredibly cheap, so you wouldn't think they'd have such sensors in their helmets.
I once remember reading that storm troopers missed a lot as they were forced into combat with minimal training in the late days of the empire. I have no idea where the guy who posted this got his info, but I like it.
there was a level in Jedi Academy that mentioned this, an enemy grunt from an underground level you can eavesdrop on will mention being a stormtrooper and yet still being unable to see through the helmet
The stormtrooper helmet connects to the weapon used by the original owner of the helmet and weapon, to help target. The helmet also does have vision to see through smoke, night vision, and other benefits. The armor also does distribute the blaster bolts through the suit. Though this shocks the wearer, knocking them out. Which means if a stormtrooper “dies” to one shot that isn’t a headshot, they didn’t die, they went unconscious. There is a countermeasure where if the helmet is worn by someone who doesn’t own it, the tech all shuts off, making them only see narrow eyeholes.
Nah cos EA Battlefront is shit. Just kidding, but probably not as well. Though yeah, Battlefront does not seem very accurate when it comes to the storyline. In the Walker Assault mode on Hoth, you could use orbital bombardment. But wasn't there a shield preventing bombardment?
No. It wasn't. Phase 1 armor could tank one, maybe two blaster bolts. The whole idea was that while Clones were by and far the superior tacticians and soldiers, they were using ion blaster bolts that are only effective at deactivating droids. Droids, using ordinary blaster bolts, were technically more lethal than Clones. Phase 2 armor wasn't as protective as Phase 1 armor, despite being more comfortable since the Kaminoans learned more about human proportions so that the clones could run faster and sit down properly. Stormtrooper armor is meant to disperse the shock and force of blaster bolts rather than outright stop them. What I'm saying is that you're basically vastly overestimating the protectiveness of plastoid armor in general.
people would poke a hole and say "why miss on purpose and risk dying?" but it is already cannon that the armor absorbs the shock, rendering troopers unconscious
The stormtroopers' poor accuracy can also be attributed to their E-11 blaster rifles, which have a reputation for poor accuracy, do to excessive recoil.
first of all, recoil in a energy weapon makes no sense. another thing, the E-11 blaster rifle used by the empire was EXTREMLY accurate due to it's integrated computer that directly connected to the soldier helmet, giving them a lot of precision. obi-wan does indeed say that stormtrooper were extremely accurate and dangerous.
Violet is The Answer You, like many people, clearly don't understand. The blasters in Star Wars fire plasma, which has mass. So, in accordance with the 3rd Law of Motion, there will be recoil. Also, if the weapon has a high rate of fire, it's almost guaranteed to have poor accuracy, regardless of precision sights. Second, if you check the official Wookiepedia page, there are a few references to the E-11's poor accuracy. In fact, in Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, while sneaking through a ceiling, the player can overhear two stormtroopers discussing the E-11. One complains of its excessive recoil seriously hampering accuracy.
TheCosmaticGamer That doesn't necessarily make it canon. Personally I think the reason they miss so much is just because it's in the script. The movie would kind of take a turn for the worse if one of the main characters suddenly died at the hands of a stormtrooper. In fact, what is canon is that the Empire doesn't focus as quality when training their troops, just quantity. The soldiers are basically thrown into boot camp and taken out after a certain amount of time whether they're really ready or not. So I think it's just a theory at this point.
In A New Hope, it is mentioned twice, by Leia and then later Darth Vader and Tarkin, that the Empire let the rebels escape on purpose so they can track them to their base.
Fact Free I know, but the fact is that until it's confirmed by Disney, this, along with all other fan theories, is just a theory. Is it realistic that an order could have been issued across a space station the size of a moon to refrain from killing four people and two droids? Even if an order had been given, how long would it take for it to reach everyone, and what are the odds that the main characters would have heard nothing about it? Another flaw in the theory is that R2 was carrying the Death Star plans. They didn't need R2 in order to make it back to the Rebel base, and Vader surely would have ordered him destroyed so no weakness could be found in the battle station. Remember the Imperial officers were talking about that possibility earlier. Why would they allow the plans to escape, even knowing that they could track the Falcon back to Yavin IV? That's suicide, and Darth Vader would have known the danger.
I always imagined that looking into the helmet was like looking into a welding helmet. Under normal circumstances, you can see. But when bright lights (like a flashbang) goes off, the helmet automatically darkens itself so you won't burn your retinas.
I always figured that the helmets were custom made for the Stormtrooper, like prescription glasses. Everyone has a different face shape and the lenses might not line up perfectly with everyone.
You forgot another reason, Princess Leia, when she was still allied with the Empire, she had ordered faulty blaster crystals. These faulty blaster crystals which powered the blaster, ended up having most imperial blasters malfunction, decrease accuracy heavily, and in rare cases, explode upon impact with another surface or blaster bolt, sometimes even exploding after prolonged use, or even rarer cases of it exploding without provocation.
Stormtrooper armor required being synced to a network and having the correct codes for each passive system update. If rebels stole it, they were locked out of most of it's features.
Might as well just call A New Hope freakin "A New" because if plot armor wasn't the case, there would be no Original, Prequel, or Sequel Trilogy. Just "Star Wars: A New"
That explains alot about their helmets, I bet also the owners of the helmet have their peripheral vision pulled around and so they are seeing almost 180 degrees. And if it has a heads up display with a targeting system it must be tied to the blaster that the soldier is holding. And if so they use plot armour all the time because those troopers would be expert shots. Also where did you get that one pic of rebel foot soldiers surrounded at a fountain being butch cassidy and the sundance kid final moments. That was awesome.
1:21 Thank you! So few people mention this! In real life, only 1 out of every 50,000 bullets fired actually hit and kill the target. With that in mind, the stormtroopers are insanely accurate.
I would like to think that the reason they can't shoot straight is because the display they get from the helmet isn't 1 to 1 with their actual sight, like the pov in a video game, that's why they mostly shoot from the hip and practice for precise fire. To clarify, precise fire means you can shoot a cluster of shots in a singular area alot, acurracy is what you aim for.
In Canon The New Order Stormtrooper has scanners so when they see a target it scans and see if its a hostile or Ally Its in the Star Wars:Before the Awekening Novel
I thought Luke can not see because the helmet was too big. But you point out something very important most people seem to miss: In the original trilogy, the Stormtroopers where under order to let the Rebels win most of the time.
Hey Fact Free, I've got a suggestion for a series of peisodes: could you explain the systems of command(i.e. sergent, lieteanent, captain, and commander) the clones used during the clone wars?

Mark Hamill (Luke) didn't know that the camera was rolling, and was actually telling Ford (Han) that he literally couldn't see.
Cool.
100% true. So happy that made it into the movie
Yet it were 120% perfect

But his voice had that radio sound to it. Not sure if that’s real. Clearly an edit
I knew there was some tec in the Helmet. but i did not knew that it turns off when another person wears it. thats really cool. great video

They are just underrated in the movie!

"Stormtrooper Effect" : hordes of bad guys fall under the might of a single/few hero(es), because the bad guys must not win. Simple as that.
I like how you casually explain the "plot armor" XD
If the helmet is stolen, then why not have an indicator that it's shut off. Too many rebels have infiltrated imperial bases just simply wearing it.
+TheCosmaticGamer
The tracker would go off every single time a helmet is taken off.
At least they'll suck at aiming wearing it lol. Storm Troopers are pros when it comes to their own gear.

Yeah. I mean, you're just a simple man trying to make your way in the universe.

But what if they are clone troopers that are main characters? The clone armor was made to withstand several blaster lasers until the armor was useless
No.

TheCosmaticGamer Huh. Does this come from Disney?
TheCosmaticGamer That doesn't necessarily make it canon. Personally I think the reason they miss so much is just because it's in the script. A good summary. Well done!
I love your final explanation!
May the script be with you.
Last part was pretty obvious, but cool video. These answers make the Imperial Military much more formidable.
Imagine being chases by stormtroopers and they all charge into random walls and trip over eachother.
Oh do I love this channel thinking of the realistic reason why stormtroopers miss...
I got a question why does a lot of storm troopers missed when they tried to shoot rebel troopers? And it's fine to kill rebel troopers right?
That was actually a good answer to why stormtroopers always miss. There is reasoning, lore, and behind the scenes explanations.
1:45 I think that the second- highest reason is because you ALWAYS see them hip-firing, which is VERY difficult.
PLOT ARMOUR xD Love it, I wanna see a movie one day where the "heroes" get killed by regular troops just like everyone else
You should make a video on if death troopers can see out of their helmets.
1:07 Thats from the game "Star Wars: Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire".
Targeting system was the best i ever seen. A New Hope example. They would not hit a barn door from 5 meters away :D
I'm guessing the helmet lockout was an Imperial innovation since Rex seemed unaware of it.
You probably should have done this a long time ago, but do a video on who shot first.
Stormtrooper armor required being synced to a network and having the correct codes for each passive system update. If rebels stole it, they were locked out of most of it's features.
Very well explained! Thank you!
