Rest in Peace, Lucy. It's always so hard to know that we are taking of a creature which we will (most likely) outlive and that grief is inevitable, but we ultimately wouldn't change a thing.

The SoD launch killed my guilds drive to raid, having the servers go down on what was our last raid night before the ICC buffs were added. But we reformed in SoD and are having an amazing time

Bro you are dreaming if you think people would continue to raid for a whole year of wrath with nothing in-between...are you serious, SoD never killed raiding and you should be thankful there is at least something to play this summer instead of logging into an inevitable dead wrath.

@@666evo666 SoD is pretty dead. I don't mean the playerbase but rather the nonexistent content. Gnomeregan is as easy as a dungeon so there's no good raid, PvP is unbalanced and STV is just a group only event with bad rewards after one day of doing it. SoD is as dead as WoTLK to me.

I'm not sure Wrath Classic exactly "failed"... I still had much less problems finding a raid at most times of the day than in the original Wrath (probably because much less servers now?).
For me, there are several other reasons as well, some of which probably tie in with the WoW Token:
(not sure if these first two are specific problems on German servers or if you have them in the US as well)
    1. GDKP:
In the original Wrath, I never ONCE encountered a GDKP raid. Now in Wrath Classic it's all over the LFG channel every day! This probably ties in with the bots (and buying gold on shady services) and the WoW Token, since both enable you to whip out your credit card, go into a GDKP raid and just straight up BUY the BIS equipment.
    2. GearScore & Logs:
In the original Wrath, there was a little bit of GearScore shenanigangs going on in the end but I don't remember any logging (except maybe Recount). Nowadays on Wrath Classic, almost every LFG message includes something like "LFM ICC25 11/12 HC, 6k+ GS, logs will be checked, 12/12 HC XP required!" gate-keepery. Of course, you'll get every single "turn with arrow keys" kind of GDKP-equipped, 6k GS touting 12yo with access to mom's credit card this way, which makes these PUGs super fun! (actually, the log check part may help against that a little... 🤔) Still, unless you attended every new raid on the very first week it comes out, you won't have any logs for it and will have a hard time being accepted into any PUG from week 2 onwards. Same problem for twinks, since you obviously forget all the tactics when you log onto your alt, because if the alt itself doesn't have logs: "Sorry, we can't invite you". 🤣
    3. I'm older and got a job now
Main point probably for most people who played original Wrath back in the days?? Back then, I was a student. I could just raid all night until 4 am and then just not attend my lectures, no problem. Now in Wrath Classic, I (and a lot of the other guys I raid with atm) are older, need more sleep and gotta get up at 4 am to go to work. Much less time to invest in WoW and raiding/farming/etc.
Still, I really enjoyed Wrath Classic overall! And I'm looking forward to playing Cata for the first time, since I quit WoW back when it originally came out.

I had recently got on my lvl 63 DK and I really liked the Outland leveling a lot better. It did this thing where you change zones more frequently and they weren't bloated with quests to the same extent Wrath was. I had 7 70s in TBC, I got 4 characters to 80 in Wrath, and three of them were helped by Joyous Journeys. TBC gave all my toons a Kara Key Quest to do, which was fun and got my toons geared up. The professions felt more valuable in TBC too. The way Wrath is designed, it like needed the dungeon finder right away. TBC's design philosophy was more hardcore, in that your druid tank could easily tank 5 mans, but your warrior, had hell keeping aggro. But yet in raids, the warriors were better. So when I played my warrior, I would start a group and I would try to bring a rogue, a mage, a priest healer, and maybe a hunter or shaman as 5th. Rogues had lots of tools to drop aggro and could cc. Mages could cc and had ice block and also had AoE for certain pulls. Shamans had tremor totem and all their buffs and while they got aggro, they wore mail, so like, it wasn't the end of the world. Priest healers had fade. Hunters could feign death and CC but we know must pug hunters are a gamble. Warlocks got aggro all the time, except when I played my warlock. Especially if they decided to run with that stupid fel guard instead of being infliction or destro. Ret paladins and DPS warriors I avoided bringing, unless I was tanking a druid. In wrath, none of this nuance mattered, so they like needed the dungeon finder from the beginning. Because there is effectively only four roles now, I just stick to my warrior, rogue, mage, and priest. I did come back when the Dungeon finder was introduced and Wrath got a lot better. Cata might be fun if 80-85 doesn't take forever to do.

I saw the first big drop in WOTLK classic in Ulduar as well. A lot of people dont talk about it, but the length and difficulty of Ulduar made a lot of people quit. After that, the writing was on the wall that they werent going to make a WOTLK Era realm so i quit and started on Era and Hardcore and have been having a blast!

I only re-subbed for Wrath Classic for the sole purpose of raiding Ulduar and its hard modes. I missed out on a month and a half of the patch due to real life taking priority. Yeah, it was never going to be the same exact experience from 2008-2010 but a lot of us could see that coming.

I did exactly what I had hoped for in wotlk. Back in the day I only achieved level 80 when togc was in full swing and actually started raiding in icc. I was made to believe that I missed out on naxx and especially Ulduar. This time around I experienced the whole progression, from naxx to icc, including achieving kingslayer with Valanyr equipped.
Not to be contrarion, just an anecdote.

I agree especially on point number 2. It seems that there are just so many versions of the game to play that the player base gets more and more split. They split the game in half between classic and retail, then vanilla and modern classic, then modern classic and versions of vanilla. Just gets to the point where we are one change away from an entire mode dying, and who wants to dedicate time to that.

Idk man, I started on skyfury. Left to whitemane when the server population went down. Was top 5 for my class in Naxx in skyfury, as well as my alt being top ten. Swapped to whitemane, hovered around the top 20 mark. Cleared all the content on heroic, hard mode, speed ran, ran and did gdkps. Have every character to 80. Did PvP, got my honor sets the classes I cared about. Wrath was exactly what I expected it to be in the modern wow landscape. Easy content with accessible rewards for alts. The bot issue has been an epidemic since classic relaunch, but I don’t really know anyone that is upset with how wrath went. Outside of the wow token, and the botting, everything else went as planned. I also was playing hardcore and sod throughout, leveled to 60 on unofficial as a warrior. I’m kinda curious what people were expecting, and also how the points mentioned shattered those expectations

  • @NG.4769

First off - RIP Lucy, sorry for your loss brother.
To follow up, while I do agree with your pointers as being negative to the game, I'd like to make a clear distinction:
YES, bots were and have been bad in Wrath, and the RMT that follows, however botting and RMT were rampant during 2019 Classic and TBC Classic, but the playerbase continued to surge. YES, the token was awful, but it was more of a nail-in-the-coffin situation for most, the token by itself without all the other negatives would not have had quite the impact, in my opinion. YES, Hardcore/SoD assisted in putting a dent into the Wrath population, but if Wrath was truly more fun than HC/SoD, then the playerbase would have returned.
...yet, the playerbase DIDN'T return, and that's for a massively obtuse reason: the changes. When Blizzard announced Classic, they proposed it as NO CHANGES. Most people presumed that to continue along with the life of Classic, and if they were going to make realms with changes then they'd be separated from the Classic trilogy. Yet, Wrath came, and the changes started flooding in. The game began to feel more and more like retail every week. If we wanted to play retail, we'd be playing retail!

IMO WoW's fate was sealed when the expansion model was established with TBC, and everything below max level was seen as irrelevant and if you weren't on the cutting edge of player power you weren't a l33t hep cat, mirroring the attitude of blizz hq itself increasingly view the game as a side hustle and no longer an end but a means to lure blizzcon groupies into the cosby dungeon. Pity that.

I would say lack of content in wrath was one of the big ones.
SoD for sure but my guild was already dead before that. D4 had a little bit to do with it to. That definitely pulled some play away for a few weeks and then when they from out D4 sucked they just didn't come back.
But yeah content. There just isn't a lot of content in wrath that I needed to do again. The guild was pretty much raid logging a few weeks in.
I've always said wrath is a great story but it was the beginning of the end for wow.

In my honest opinion what "killed" WotLK classic was nothing else but the own community, same as in TBC , not as much as in classic though. You would log in and 95% of the people in the LFG chat would advertise GDKPs. Don't get me wrong, the addition of token may have been pretty harmful but the reason why game died quickly was simply GDKPs. If you didn't buy gold , you simply couldn't play the game , same problem was in TBC but not as major as in Wrath.

IMO, the biggest issue with Wrath and Vanilla/TBC is that they're ultimately the product of different design philosophies, and really intended to appeal to different crowds. Well, maybe not intended to, but the fact is they do. Wrath and beyond are really made for the "game begins at max level" crowd. There's a reason Era started coming back during Wrath and not before. I don't think there's anything Blizzard can do to bring those two sides together anymore. Hopefully, they've realized this, and SoD is their attempt to figure out how to do a dedicated Classic+ for people who appreciate the journey more than the destination.

The parsing/class-stacking culture and GDKPs/botting/inflation killed a lot of the fun for Wrath. Parsing & class stacking has always existed since OG WoW in top end guilds, but the culture for even casual events in Wrath Classic was very elitist.
I also think having a no-wipe reward for ToC was a big mistake, since it made the “catch-up raid” super sweaty as well. Would have been more fun to bring alts, but you still had to have tons of Ulduar gear to not bring your group down in ToC since you wanted to get your cloaks. At that point, you didn’t have alts, you had 2-3 full characters.

I'm not gonna lie, the reason I ended up quitting was my guild breaking up, and me not wanting to find a new guild with a laid back attitude on what once was a relatively chill server but has since become toxic.
Despite this, Blizz's problem with the Bots and the WoW token KEPT me from coming back. When SoD released it sealed the deal, as if I come back itll be to that, not WotLK.

Sorry about your dog. As for WOTLK Classic, the over abundance of relying on addon's such as Weak Aura's to raid, even in casual raiding guilds, and the endless usage in parsing metrics made the experience far more sufferable. I enjoyed WOTLK retail as an expansion. The classic version felt more like retail with a WOTLK wrapper. I so wanted to enjoy the thrill of Ice Cream Citadel once again. For the reasons listed above, I found myself leaving it behind.

to the topic of Wotlk's failure:
call me crazy, but i dont think the wow token was a reason for its downfall. GDKP was the biggest reason. Without gdkp, people wouldnt have a reason to buy gold, that was generated by bots. wow token was just a legit reason for more honorable players to keep up with those crazy prices.

I called the token the day they announced the TBC level boost. I plead my case on the forums as best I could, only to be told by the vast majority of players that the boost was good for new players, and they wouldn't dare add the token.
Once again, it seems the playerbase is incapable of foregoing something beneficial to them in the short term for the long term health of the game. Makes me sad in a way, though I've long since given up on the players advocating for the game effectively.

I think a lot of it has to do with community killing itself not even with all the minmaxxing classic survived all the world buff meta but it’s really discouraging to a player that’s trying to find a guild to raid with when all the groups they see are gdkp runs and all the good guilds already have a full raid group so you’re either going to not raid or join a gdkp group which is just full of gold that’s just been RMT since the beginning of the classic era leading to huge prices compared to what the original wrath would have been but somehow there’s a big group of vocal people that say that gdkp is good for the game and those people are likely the ones buying gold and ruining it for the biggest group of players just trying to find a guild that actually does stuff

  • @ToaXP
    @ToaXP 6 місяців тому

I didn't pvp so tbh I barely saw bots because I only had to log in for two days a week to raid. Another thing since the beginning is gdkps, and with wow token added that made it even worse. Guild got to the end but lots of people left.

None of these were my main issues with wotlk and why i quit ,just extra nails in the coffin and reasons why i wouldnt want to go back. For me, it was raiding. Im mixed on the focus of minmaxing. Also, i just realized as i got older, i dont want longer phases but i also want to satisfaction of getting most of my bis and feeling that satisfaction of being "done" so i dont have to worry about that character especially since i want to gear alts but just not raiding.

This WotLK should be the last classic installment. At this point now blizzard is just reselling the titles 4 cash grabs on the old content.. Its my opinion that expansions after LK will BOMB, just as subs declined in retail after LK.. LK was the last FUN best expansion of world of warcraft.. BLIZZARD should know this

I think people just misjudge the success of original Wrath and was expecting the best thing ever. Of course it is good but Wrath was not the only reason WoW got to 12M players, that playerbase was built in Vanilla/TBC and the ongoing success of a game that at the time was pretty new.

I've loved wotlk for a few weeks, maybe a month or two with every "new" raid but since none of this content is new people clear it a lot faster and for a while now wotlk has just been "cata waiting room" . I've gone and rerolled on TurtleWOW since not only do I enjoy classic more than wrath but it actually feels better and more balanced than SoD does.

"Bots killed WotLK classic" lol lmao even, how can you even say this with a straight face when you played in HC servers and classic era servers? Or have we forgotten about all the hunter bots farming thousand needles 24/7 in era? All the mage trains going back and forth into stockades in SoD? What a joke.

Classic hardcore didn't "kill" wotlk. ICC released, people did the raid and then quit, including me. There's literally no point sitting there farming BIS gear for months when you know classic cata is next up on the chopping block. For me I achieved what I wanted in classic wotlk, I raided from day 1 until the end with my real life buddy in the guild we joined which were a bunch of great guys, we didn't kill 25man LK hc but our 10man group killed it which was a great feeling considering we're all wage cucks and can't sit there and raid 24/7.
To me wotlk was a huge success. Also the WoW token literally didn't affect the population at all. Even your most average Joe realised pretty damn quickly that you could run the daily hc on a few characters (let's say 3-4 chars) and make around 8k gold per month, which was more than enough to buy a token, which means they played for free just by doing the casual daily tasks for emblems and shit. In regards to bots, yes that was major issue that Blizzard clearly had no intention of solving, because rather than solving it they implemented a policy which forced the botters to pay at least once in order to buy a token, so they basically just monetized botting even more instead of fixing it. Such dirty fucking tactics.
But to me this was the last "hoorah" in regards to WoW, I will probably go back to play VERY casually if they make the game completely F2P, but until then I'm done with the game no matter the different kind of versions they end up releasing.

I never got to really play vanilla or tbc since I was 8 when I started playing. So getting to play classic and BCC. Was awesome. I had done wrath on warmane so many times. Wasn’t to pumped about classic wrath. Same goes for cata/mop. I raided and pvpd every season in OG and on private servers. SOD I great and it definitely killed classic wrath ( that and GDKP and gold buying/selling.)

For me, why i couldnt even really get into wotlk was what happened to TBC. What i knew at the back of my mind will happen to WotLK and what is happening right now.
The fact that its ending. When i played i dont enjoy the equipment hunting, i know i will be playing this game for years to come. i spend 5 years on one free server and the loot eventually came to me and i would gladly spend 5 more on classic wotlk and the loot would once again eventually made its way to me even at the bottom of the loot table. I didnt mind that, never did, but even i wanted to have that sweet red gear score. And now i never will. I dont enjoy Cata and i know i will hate progressing through datadiscs again. It feels like just a money grab on people feeling nostalgia. A lot a gain for minimum effort. No thanks. And so my character will stay at level 80 wilt barely ULD gear for ever.
