    Heat mats, heat bulbs, and ceramic emitters... which one is best? Today, I go over the pros and cons of each. Keep in mind, none are necessarily “better” than another all of the time. It depends on the animal, the temperatures needed, and the circumstances you’re in.

    IMPORTANT, TORTOISES:
    Never use heat mats with tortoises. Tortoises like to burrow to chill out. If they start burrowing and there's warmth, they'll keep digging to find cold and badly burn themselves due to direct exposure. Once again, do not but heat mats for tortoises!

      Youre animal should never ever be able to get burned from a heat mat. If your animal is getting burned you have a unregulated heat mat. You should be using a thermostat with heat mats. Heat mats can reach 160°F- 200°F unregulated.

    I have a heat light and a heat mat for each of my snakes. The way I use them is I use only the heat lamp during the day in the cooler months and then the heat mat at night for the light cycle. Since the ambient temperatures are pretty hot in the summer I just use the heat mat 24/7 so then my snakes can still have a warmer spot especially if they are digesting. The pro of just using the heat mat in the summer is the bulb raises the ambient temps, whereas the heat mat only heats the area it's touching.

    Heat mats can work with wooden enclosures. You just have to get a heat mat holder. It's a glass holder that sticks to the bottom of the tank and holds the mat in place while allowing the heat out

    I‘m really excited to get back into reptile keeping! Used to have two (seperately housed) leopard geckos, but I had to find new homes for them when I was in hospital for half a year. I really miss them, and now my health and living situation is finally at a place where I can adopt a gecko! Heating is something I‘m not yet sure about. I used to have heating bulbs, but I didn’t really like the quality of those so I‘m here to look for different options

    I've been learning a lot of information about ball pythons and the one thing that always stumps me is the heating I know that heat pads are the most used way of heating but should I just us a heat pad or a heat lamp too?

    • @GoHerping
      @GoHerping  7 років тому +19

      I think it depends on the situation. I always put a heat mat as priority so in the warm months (like now) I can get by with just a heat mat. However as it gets cooler, I have to add a lamp too, to keep up temperatures. So you may need to buy a mat, and see if it's enough before getting a bulb depending on your houses's temps.

    For my year old ball python I have her in a 4ft wooden vivarium. At first I struggled to give her belly heat but now I keep a large piece of slate under her heart bulb. This works fine since she can go there to get her belly heat and her viv is kept the correct temperature. I also use a heat bulb that emits light but that's not an issue since I drop the temperature at night and the light dims or doesn't have to be on at all since wooden vivs hold heat so well. Hopefully this will help someone if they're stuck on heating a wooden vivarium :)

My idea is to place a 250 Watt no light heat bulb in a ceramic lamp above and have it heat a large rock below for belly heat (emulating the sun). Of course i have this hooked up to a temp controller and use different lights for day/night stuff. So far, everything reads spot on. We'll see how it goes when my new buddy gets here.

    Good review.
    I need some help with mine. I have a new medium low exo terra 24x18x12. I am confused on where to put the probe. I have about 1" of cypress mulch and I tried putting the probe on top of the substrate. The temp got to 90 degrees using a mat and lamp up top, but the glass at the bottom (directly above the mat) was clocking at 116 degrees when I moved the substrate. There is a huge difference between the bottom of the substrate to the top. I fear the snake will move the 1" substrate and burn. I moved the probe to the glass and bumped it down to 96 degrees on the thermostat but now the top of the substrate (base of the hide) won't go above 83 degrees. How do I fix this?

He generally stays in his hide during the day, and goes out of the hide to explore the tank later at night. I live in a generally cold area, and his tank is in a dim area. Is this setup alright to maintain, or should I look into updating it???

      Large domes only. 10 inch is best for CHEs. Small domes trap heat at the base and weaken the CHE lifespan.

    Hi I'm wondering if i should go up a size 12 watts which is for 30-40 (zoomed brand)my 20 gL tank for A leopard gecko I'm asking this simple because I've heard of them during due to being so hot or overheating. Will the bigger one work at lower temps for one gecko, just so its not using its full power and over heat easier. I will be purchasing a thermostat.

    First I'd like to pick your brain about your thoughts on this for chubby frogs. I've got a glass lid on a 20 gallon high aquarium with a ceramic heat admitted 25w with about 3 inches of coco coir substrate and wanted to know if this will be sufficient or if I should go with a bigger watt bulb if so which would you suggest? I will not be using a under tank heater because these frogs dont need it in my research I've done.

    • @danickdjb7555

      with the ceramic's you can just put an extension cord in your thermostat as they do not give off light and will not bother you're animal at night. I do not recommend it with the other lightbulb options as they will switch on and off during the night to keep your temp up. :)

  • @electricbluedodo
    @electricbluedodo 5 років тому

    How do you feel about radient heat panels for ball pythons? I already have a heat mat, but for the winter I'm worried about keeping the ambient temperature high enough without heating the whole room or drying out the tank with a heat lamp

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 4 роки тому +1

      Heat panels are great! If using a screen top, make sure to cover much of the screen outside of the heater. Foil tape works to cover the screen. You may not even need a heat pad, depends on the cage of course. For a heat panel, it should be no more than 12 inches above the animal. But if you are using it just for some additional heat along with the heat pad, it can be a little higher if the cage is tall.

    You mention using heat mats with a reptile thermostat to keep temps correct. Do you mean a thermostat they plug into? Can you recommend a good one? I have seen alot of lights and uth that have their life span significantly reduced (6-8 months at best) by plugging them into thermostats or timers.
    I want to control my temps better but I dont want to pay for a new UTH every 6 months, especially since I have to use multiple large ones for my 55-75gal glass encosures.
    Can you also cover pros and cons of halogen and fluorescents?

      The ON/OFF cycle on bulbs weaken the filament. UTH's do not suffer from that. For a ceramic heat emitter and UTH, using a more expensive proprtional thermostat will increase the life of the heater compared to using an ON/OFF thermostat like that ipower. I have CHE's going 10 years, same with heat pads - all still going strong. Light bulbs require ON/OFF control because they emit light, or else a dimming proportional controller. Best bet, ditch the stupid heat lamps, use heat pads and/or ceramic heat emitters and use proportional thermostats. You will not replace any heaters again.

    Hi, I own several reptiles and I have lots of supplies. To save my self a lot of money, I would like to reuse my heating mats. There is nothing wrong with them, but I’ve just gotten new ones in the past, just for the heck of it and I just save the used ones. However, I would like to reuse them, but they aren’t sticky enough to hold them up. Would you recommend using a certain type of tape? Or do you know how I can get them to stick in a way that is safe? Thank you 🙂

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 4 роки тому

      Aluminum foil tape works and is safe. I use regular old hook & loop pads (aka Velcro) on some heat mats because I can easily remove the heat mat if I take the cage out to wash it on occasion.
