I miss him (and Wakefield too) a lot. A good knuckleballer will make the best batter look like a fool and that was top notch baseball entertainment for me. It’s sad no one is teaching this of late. It’s really a lost art.
Who is here after reading/listening to Adam Grant's latest book, "Hidden Potential", in which one chapter talked about Dickey's long struggle before finding success?
@@andrewjacks2716 Yes, it is a great book. The part on Dickey got me interested in baseball again (I played for 1 year in my teens). I wish Dickey set up an academy to teach the art of the knuckleball to aspiring pitchers so that it won't become extinct. The knuckleball also gives hope to those of smaller stature to still succeed as a pitcher in the MLB.
His book was amazing too. The struggle the hardship setting the record for most hrs in a MLB inning to a truly top their knuckler amazing read highly recommended.
The best baseball vids to watch, in all history, are the ones of RA Dickey during his last year and a half with the Mets. Watching batter after batter after batter flail helplessly at pitches that don’t follow a trajectory, but instead orbit that trajectory, just brings immense joy. Especially knowing the humble demeanor and gratitude of Dickey himself while this was occurring.
yeah, just imagine watching Hoyt Wilhelm! some nicknamed him "Knuckes"! they say Leo Durocher when he managed the New York Giants, to call in Wilhelm from the 'bullpen' he would simply stand on the last step of the dugout and show his knuckles.
That pitch at 3:20 was straight filthy. How are there not more knuckleballers in the majors? That should be the pitch every pitcher should be chasing. It's great for your arm, allowing you to pitch more. Plus, the longevity alone is huge! Charlie Hough played until he was 46!! There should be tons of knuckleball pitchers on paper. Must be hard to master with advantages like practically being unhittable if you throw it right.
I loved my Dickey. ❤❤❤❤ That time against the Yankees? Ball got a little away from him, almost beaned A-Rod. He went down on his ass, Dickey threw his hands up like, OH NO! And ya know what? A-Rod laughed. He knew RA was crazy, but he'd never deliberately throw at anyone.
Forgot about this! RA split the nail on his middle finger the morning he was pitching the night game. Solution? Korean nail salon on Hillside Ave in Queens. She hooked him UP.
yeah, I read in "Sports Illustrated" he could hit 90 mph with his knuckle ball. this was unheard of! most knucklers threw it in the 60 and 70 mph range. I remember thinking, "How could Dickey do that!"
continued from last post...... yeah, I just read this morning the Yanks paid $5 million a year (one year contract) with a half-a-million signing bonus AND a $5 million option for the year after AND THE RELIEF PITCHER HASN'T PITCHED A TOTAL 30 INNINGS COMBINED IN THE LAST TWO YEARS!!! (maybe it is time for Cashman to go, time will tell.....)
@@JK-ld8cdIn hindsight it wasn’t a good trade for the Mets. Dickey’s knuckleball was suited well for the DHless NL and the pieces you got back (D’arnaud, Syndergaard) didn’t do that well in the long run.
People don’t understand nowadays or probably don’t know who this is or how good this guy was for so long if he doesn’t make the Hall of Fame that’s the biggest mistake ever

Man, I'd forgotten how much fun it was to watch this guy pitch. Good times.
Great time, especially me I’m from Queens

He was great with the Mets, painful to watch with the Jays.....B.P. Dickey 😂

I have RA's book.
I am, starting chapter 6 now...😊
To paraphrase Bob Ueker: “The best way to catch a knuckleball is to wait for it to stop rolling around and then pick it up.” 😂
love how batters walk away after striking out on a knuckleball, they just accept it
"Yeah I'm done playing this drop third game, you know the drill"

Indeed! Mans been through it. Movie worthy.

Just got into baseball a couple years ago and this is incredible to watch, that knuckleball is something else

Greatest knuckleball of all time ⚾
Niekro
aaah... actually.... I don't think you guys heard of Hoyt Wilhelm. he even threw a no-hitter on a rare start complete game.

Knuckleballers, the pitchers that last forever. LFGM
Underrated pitcher

LOVE the Ol school knuckle ball/side arm pitchers.....Dieing breed.

Is this a true story? If so, that’s hilariously epic.
@edgoodwin4389 Yes. I loved and STILL love my Dickey. Got a big write up in the NY Daily News!
81 mph knuckler is just absolutely insane

The Last of the dying breed👌
If he was here in 2022....we win it all
Man I forgot how much these Mets teams were garbage R.A was the only bright spot on this team. Other than seeing the captain in a uniform
Jose Reyes, David Wright, they had some good talent but yah.... collapseable is the word that comes to mind
@@Kruppt808 younger Mets sure but when dickey was there those teams were garbage lol

That's a Master Pitcher who knows how to mess with Batters heads just like the late Cricket spin bowler Shane Warne from Australia
Josh Thole masterclass

Its just a pitch he throws where we all know its coming but none of us know what it's gonna do...

The most unlikely pitcher in the last 20 year.
best part about Dickey is the Mets knew when to trade him!
