This was in 1989, when Nickelodeon still aired syndicated or foreign cartoons. 2 years later, in August 11, 1991 was when the network changed forever with their Nicktoons. Doug, Rugrats and Ren & Stimpy debuted, and the rest is history.

and Cro--aired on Nickelodeon at that time, from 1987-1992 and again from 1996-2000, of Gadget's prime.
The show was notable for Nickelodeon's history in that it was the first "big-name" cartoon to appear in reruns on the channel where it gained greatest exposure and became popular. It is one of the few shows aired on Nickelodeon that would air on another network at the same time, then depart to another network and then come back to Nick a few years later; it was aired on CBS on its Saturday Morning lineup from 1991 to 1992, repackaged syndicated on local affiliates from 1992 to 1994, then aired on the Family Channel from 1992 to 1995 before returning to Nick in late 1996. Interestingly, after Nickelodeon stopped airing Gadget again in 2000, it moved back to the Family Channel, which by that point had become the Fox Family Channel (though by the time Gadget returned to that channel, it was mere months away from becoming ABC Family) after the sale to Fox to Disney (which owns Gadget at that time), and ran there in late 2001. At this period, Inspector Gadget was the #1 rated kid's show on syndicated television, and a proven winner, Nickelodeon's #2 rated show.
