    Absolutely FANTASTIC...I am seeing footage that I have NEVER seen before..the fact that my Grandfather was taken prisoner by 90th Light at the tail end of El Alemein is just staggering to behold in that he watched World at War and although no gone (but not forgotten)..seeing these scenes especially at the end of a private film is actually bringing my Grandfather alive..that he was living these moments when this was filmed.
    Also..just as a footnote...my Grandfather stated on being taken prisoner..loads of Germans HAD cameras! (The British Army was VERY averse to men and officers taking pictures) Plus..many were wearing issue spectacles.
    He also said..no matter what..even under the heaviest (British) gunfire.."..they always has a sense of still wearing their caps.." ""I never really saw a Jerry wearing a helmet.."

    The portion of the newsreel about Velikiye Luki deserves its own hour-long video. The two+ year epic of the bloody offensive & defensive struggles around that little Russian town were shocking in their intensity & violence. In his book, Hitler Moves East, Paul Carell devotes an entire chapter to the brave German & Russian soldiers who fought & died for 2 long years around, what the author called, that fortress in the swamp. After the war the vindictive & bitter soviet victors, picked out from their P.O.W. camps any German troops who had fought at Velikiye Luki; took them back to the fortress and there, tried them by court martial. One man of each rank was sentenced to death by hanging-one general, one colonel, one lieutenant-colonel, one major, one captain, one lieutenant, one top sergeant, one sergeant, one senior corporal, one corporal, and one private.
    On 29th January, 1946 the men were publicly hanged in Lenin Square in Velikiye Luki. Among them were the commander of 277th Infantry Regiment and the former town commandant, company commanders, railway officials, junior commanders, and rankers. All others who could be rounded up were sentenced to twenty or twenty-five years' imprisonment at hard labor. Only eleven of them survived to return to Germany between 1953 and 1955. For some reason, being unable to recapture this unknown Russian town back from the Germans, infuriated Stalin & STAKVA, so they made an example of the Germans who fought there. Something similar also happened in what was then Kharkov after it was finally recaptured by the Russians for the final time.

    8:07 Crusader III tank with a 6pounder/57mm gun. Final variant first used in the second battle of El Alamein in 1942 and last used in Tunisia, 1943 for combat by the Brits except for those fitted with AA guns used in NW Europe 1944-45. Small and fast but lightly armored and not particularly reliable in the harsh desert conditions , it was replaced by the Cromwell cruiser tanks and Shermans. The Crusader I and II were used for most of the desert war but with the small 2 pounder 47mm guns that limited their effectiveness (hence the upgrade to the 57mm gun.

    First time for me to see a U-Boat taking on a torpedo like that, from a Type XIV milch cow it appears? No way I'd want to do that, in even a in a mild sea. Getting caught between the boat & torpedo looks pretty easy, the boat is barely floating & trimmed so far down at the bow. Never thought about that bit! =)
    _The Falangist Spaniards (the 250th?) were all volunteers within the Wehrmacht, not he SS., an unusual unit. Love to know how Franco got most out, what he offered Hitler. Thanks M1945._

      Все цели были достигнуты.
      1. Гитлер получил много испанских головорезов. А Франко соответственно избавился от особенно ретивых идиотов.
      2. Эти головорезы были утилизированы русскими, Воздух стал чище.
      3. Гитлер пустил больше крови русским. Как будто 20 миллионов убитых мирных жителей ему было мало.

      Lots of books are written about the Franco-Hitler issue, only thing needed is reading any of them. Btw, not all the soldiers of the 250th were falangists, they were mostly in the first wave in june of 1941.

    • @geoland09
      @geoland09 5 місяців тому +3

      The Spaniards have been proud to this day of having fought Bolshevism in their lair, which committed great massacres in Spain. The fighting in Leningrad was tough and the Russians respected the fierceness of the Spanish soldier. You would have to read the memoirs of many "guripas" to understand the psychology of the divisionary...
