A place of your own, that doesn't have a ton of monthly bills, a place you can grow your own food, but yet close enough to town to work...... your ranch sounds like my kind of heaven. Dont let someone else push their expectations for life on you. Some people love urban life, some people love rural life everyone is different but to provide your kids with opportunities to learn valuable skills of being self sufficient as they grow up, ranch chores, etc it will stand them in better stead than video games and toys and they can even enjoy ranch life. If you want to grow your own food with minimal work then check out aquaponics. The only thing I will say remember what you wanted when you started this chapter in your life.

I once worked for someone that had lived a couple of years just outside of town. He said he loved it but the drive into town everyday ultimately made him decide to move back into town. For some reason that comment stuck in the back of my mind. A few years later I bought my land out in the country (50 miles from work). I kept thinking about his comment and wondering if I too would grow tired of the drive. 10 years later it dawned on me he did not make it 2 years and I was going strong after 10 years. It was 33 years ago that I moved out here. As long as your wife is happy it will be fine.

It needs to be constructed to the degree to where a rescue vehicle (ambulance at a minimum and a FD brush truck also) can traverse the road.
If the worry about "trespassers" or "other non-invited guests" is warranted, then maintaining the road/driveway in such a poor state to deter them from using it is crazy. There are methods that can be used at the head of the road or at the point where he connects to the public use portion to block or restrict egress. Pull-offs or wide spots (enough where 2 vehicles can go by one another safely (if one is stopped in the pull-off) should be considered also.

Do you think 9 x 40 yard dumpsters of trash and a little scat on the walls in the bedroom would dissuade me? No way! Anyway the more you get out of the city the more you better have good neighbors because my neighbor IS the thief and it has cost me thousands to not keep stuff NOT there. I live in a similar situation here in New Brunswick, Canada. I have a long road as well. With your excavator bucket, simply 'Ditch the Road'. Many trouble spots will disappear instantly, and never return during any season. Some spots may reappear, and may require further thought. It is so easy. Stop belly aching about your road. Just ditch it to provide runoff.

Kitchens & Bathrooms cabinets: Am sure you know this already. Make sure you have good tolerances for things like your pipe behind the dishwasher and other whitegoods. So you can get things in and out for maintenance/ renewal. We bought a bog in the UK and we are cheering you on with your project. In UK we allow about 2 inches (50mm) for each built in item. And about an inch at corners.

My parents never consulted me or my siblings on their decisions for our future. Why? Because we could never see what our parents saw ...or knew about the world. When they moved us out to the piney woods with no neighbors it was the best move of our lives. Summers spent swimming in the creek and fishing. Biking 4 miles to the nearest town ( not one red light ).
To this very day ( we are all near or in our 60's ) we recall that childhood in the woods of Western Tennessee as the best times of our lives. Nothing compares. Winters by the fireplace, Autumn pumpkin carving, raking and burning leaves, Summer catching fireflies and sleeping out in tents and in the Spring just watching everything come to life was pure magic for all of us.
Your children will thank you one day if you make this move. All the best.

    Jeremiah 29:11-14
11For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you," declares the LORD,...........
    Forever in our prayers.Blessings

  • @ChrisBadman

I think I understand where the inspector was coming from. It's about time. The time you'll spend on the little things (maintenance, travel, etc) by living out there add up quickly. So while the act of building the home is rewarding, so could be the extra time devoted to something else. (i.e. children/family/friends/hobbies) I have a large-ish property, and concern myself with the same dilemma. I truly love it. But would I love the extra time more? If you're an outdoorsman, then living on a large property seems like a bonus. But if the time you could spend hunting/fishing is replaced by taking care of that property... where does that put you? For example, I love to fish. I have a pond. I rarely get to fish in my pond or any other water body. Because I have things to take care of plus a full time job plus a family.
So, while I don't advocate always seeing time as a currency, it's important to understand the finite resource that it is, and make sure that it is spent wisely.
Now, everyone's situation is different. And sometimes owning/building the property has something to do with "I don't have the money to buy what we need, but I can build it for a fraction of the cost, and here's land I can afford to do so... oh and by the way, it just happens that it's way out in the boonies", then so be it. Your decision has merit for other reasons than, "We like it out here." Because your time investment, could also RETURN time back to you in the form of being more self-employed in a sense that, "This larger property and remoteness allows us to do things that could potentially provide income or offset costs of living via gardening our own food sources, or harvest natural resources like honey, syrup."
Either way, I love watching your videos. I don't think I would/could ever do something like this, but watching gives me that little bit of spark of motivation... "Could I?"

I read every single word you wrote and completely disagree with everything you said. This makes him and his family happy and that's it. Dont give your opinion if it contradicts his way of life.

    • @ChrisBadman
      @ChrisBadman 4 роки тому

@@jeremiah2232 This is social platform. Where you're meant to give your opinion. I'm sorry you're too worried about your own opinion about my opinion that you felt the need to interpret it as argument. Perhaps open your mind a bit more to other people's viewpoints and re-read my post from top to bottom.
I think you'll see that I'm simply expanding on what I felt the inspector meant based upon my own experience. Then I go on to elaborate that even though I see things a certain way, not everyone views this way of living from the same stance and people may choose it for different reasons that the original inspector may not have considered when making his statements. However, that doesn't make his input less valuable. If you refuse to take advice or knowledge from people who may have already been where you're going, you could be missing out on wisdom.
Do you disagree with the fact that you spend time on little things that can add up? If so, go check out Episode #394 "The Struggle Is Real" where he talks about it. Now, this is where my "opinion" comes into play. Time is finite. You can't make more of it, and you can't decided when your's is up. So as you make decisions about how you're going to live your life, you have to decide what's going to be most worth it to you in the end. Again, I think the inspector was possibly talking about it this way.
