When we (U.S.) ran secret recon missions into Cambodia, and our government could not fly in to support us (due to diplomatic red tape), there were Australian pilots who would disobey direct orders to fly in to support us by air. So I just want to say, god bless those pilots for what you did and I'll always support the Aussies

My uncle was part of the 161st kiwi artillery. He told me that one of the guns they used overheated so bad that they scraped it. He also said that when him & his mates went too look at the site of where their bombs landed. It was flippin horrible. Not a good sight. Thank you uncle for your service.

My first day in Vietnam...right off the plane at Long Binh, met a wounded ANZAK who was leaving. His words were seared into my brain to this day, "Good Luck, mate! You'll need it!"

Yes definitely... they're embarrassed to show their feelings at the start and bagging the VC soldiers without actually meaning it. But by the end the bravado/ego has gone and they can share the feelings with them. It is beautiful when I see the Aussie bravado give way to real connection between men.

We, the South Vietnamese, owed you big time for fighting for our freedom along us against the communist's aggression. It is heart wrenching to see the way you were treated by the Australian public on your return. The unsung heroes of the Australian army will never be forgotten by the people from South Vietnam.

I salute the Australians who served in Vietnam. I had infrequent contact with Australian troops but my observation was that they had high morale, were gung ho, good fighters and provided all their own weapons and equipment and uniforms. I was at Bien Hoa AB from Nov. '68 to Nov. '69, when some 15,000 American troops were killed and many more wounded. I was with the 3rd Security Police Squadron charged with defending the air base against ground attack. Those were exciting times and we experienced more in that one year than most people experience in a lifetime. I salute you Australian Vietnam Veterans.

As a Yank, I smile at the fierce resolve of our ANZAC, Canadian and British allies. There’s something about the spirit of independence and freedom that Anglo Saxon culture has brought to the world. Happily we’ve extended that spirit to others although empires have faded as a result. Peace to Vietnam and other Euro colonized countries in Asia , Africa, Latin America, the Mideast and Caribbean. It took us many years to acknowledge their equal yearning for freedom. Hopefully we will put inter-human war to rest.

We here in Australia, have come accustomed to hearing the word 'hero' bandied about every other day. So called heroes because that have saved Australia's name in some simple sporting contest and they brought home the cup or won a bloody gold medal. Nothing dangerous or the chance of losing life, yet the newspapers and television news, hails them as heroes. As do their local communities and provide them with the key to city and a procession through the streets.
Give me strength to understand this rubbish.
True heroes do what they do and they do it because that is what they are made of. They do it without being acknowledged or expecting to be so. These magnificent men, against all odds, are the true heroes of our country.

    • @newtoncountry5937
      @newtoncountry5937 8 років тому +4

I agree with you 100%. Here in America it is the same problem. Our heroes are criticized and disrespected by people who don't agree with the politics behind war, or are against war in general. Soldiers have no say in what wars they fight, they follow orders that come from our presidents and they do it without question because, as you said, that's what heroes do. I also find it shameful that the Australians do not get the recognition in our country for being our allies in Vietnam and the lives that they sacrificed. They are rarely mentioned in American programs about that war. Much respect and thanks to the brave Aussies who fought and died alongside our boys over there.

My hat is off to the Aussies, I have had so many Vietnam vets tell me about the war and even family members, I am American and I am really happy to see the Vietnamese North Vietnamese and Vietcong and all Vietnamese civilians be so warm to their once enemies The Americans and the Aussies as well as our other allies that fought in The Vietnam War, I admire the Vietnamese as much as my own family members and friends that served in that God forsaken war, it takes a hell of a brave person to meet their enemies and break the bread and drunk together, we are ALL brothers in arms, I wish we would all love one another, treat each other with respect and dignity and my greatest hope is that one day mankind will find a better way to settle disputes then to declare war on each other, there has got to be a better way and I think everyone in the world could learn a lot from all the Vietnam veterans especially the ones that have made their way back to Vietnam and met their adversaries and settle their differences and showing each other respect and dignity and kindness and even love,, God bless you all...

It is disapointing that no credit was given to the Kiwi forward observer, who was right there in the thick of it, directing extremely accurate fire from the RNZA 161 bat. Not to take anything away from the Aussies, but this fact is too important to overlook. Credit to- F.O. Morrie Stanley (call sign- Shelldrake), 161 field battery RNZA.

The Australians, South Korean Marines and Canadian volunteers all fought in Vietnam along with the Americans. Each group distinguished themselves not just as soldiers but as warriors. I was with the First Marine Air Wing in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 and remember our commanders talking about the strength and excellence our allies. I can't say any group was better than any other I will just say they were all the best. I was proud to serve with them.

On the 40th anniversary I ran a two week long display at Orford Branch Library for the Battle of Long Tan, had some wonderful personal photographs sent to me by the Burnie (Tas) RSL members also a copy of some ABC interviews etc on CD. It ran as a continous loop all the day. Educated quite a few on the Vietnam War, Australia's National Servicemen and their commitment to Australia's defence. They had no idea some of the things our troops went through. Need to say thanks fellas for all you did.

Was watching a platoon of Australians on patrol on the side of a paved road in Vietnam, they stepped off the road and were gone, out of sight, no movement in the tall grass betraying them. I was startled, it seemed surreal.
Another time we had to land short of our destination, wound up on top of an Australian camp. They met us, insulted us, we got in a short fist fight, next thing you know they were getting us completely drunk. Most of the comments seem to be that the vietcong had been fighting since fighting the French but in reality they have been fighting the Japanese before that.

It's a long story and o won't tell again here but My LRRP team was overseen by two Companies of RFPFs led by Australian Officers. They fought a large force of NVA in the early morning hours of November 14,1968 possibly saving my team and me. Thank you Aussies.

My mother in law and her children had tied to those VC who fought in those war between 1966-1973. One time when i was alone with her, I asked her about the war, she told me briefly about helicopter dropped off the troops right in front of her house and these troops started search her house....her story was quickly hush off by her children (brothers in law and sisters in law). She is 84yo and live in Long An all her life. Every where i go i felt like someone watch behind my back.

Here in Great Britain I know of the brave Australians at Long Tan ,
Those men were sent by politicians to do a job and they did all that was asked of them and more , they fought like Lions and all they got in return was to be disowned by their own government and many Australians, shame on a country that does that to men who fought and died for their country , they should have been welcomed back as heroes , if you think the Australians had no place being in Vietnam then take it up with the politicians not the soldiers who did what was asked of them .

Hi Neva, there were Americans supporting the Australians during the battle. U.S. artillery - A Bty, 2/35th Howitzer Battalion (155m M109 howitzers) was being fired in support alongside the 2 x Australian artillery batteries and 1 x New Zealand artillery battery. Also, U.S. choppers did assist the Australian choppers with the near midnight casualty evacuation of the wounded and dead Australians from the landing zone near the rubber plantation and as you point out a U.S. airstrike.

First time I've seen this, a great tribute story. A terrible and controversial war, but this battle should never have been given any less respect than Gallipoli or any other conflict ANZAC's fought and died in. True heroes, never to be forgotten.

What comes out of this is the Australian Government went there as part of the US forces, but when these brave vets came home no-one wanted to know them, well this is not the way we less older people think and Vietnam vets should be given the honour and rewards they deserve as they had no choice but to go there and fight.

technically not Styer mate, we have the rights to make our own the F88A2 by lithgow which is better than the STG77A2. and we now have the EF88 which is the best AUG style rifle to date.

Not many people know that there were other soldiers in Veitnam, not just the U.S, some of our Canadian Troops were there as well, the Canadian Government was unoffically invovled, just like the Boer War. Veitnam started as IndoChina was going against the French, but then quickly ended up being Americas War. I am not downing ANY soldier at all. I have mad respect for every soldier. Including out past enemies. They fought for their country, and I will fight for mine. Good on ya Austrailia!

I don’t think a lot of Australians realize just how many Americans think the world of them. They were stalwart allies for generations in the past and hopefully, for many more generations to come.

Thankyou mate and we Aussies think the world of our great alliance with u American patriots as well, it is a shame however that the system that we both lost young men fighting against ie communism seems to be gaining popularity with the brainwashed University students over there and its like that here to, guess they didnt understand why it is a dead system and being the woke wankers most of them are u would think the atrocities committed in its name would of turned them off but i guess their professors have done their indoctrination job well.
