  • Superstars goes pretty hard and gave me an excuse to talk about my two favorite things: Mario Party and adaptation.

I think something this analysis left out was just how much more accessible items are in this game compared to the originals. Items are pretty common (thanks to Lucky spaces) very cheap, with Mushroom adding 5 to your roll for a mere 3 Coins, and you can carry 3 of them. A lot of the larger segments of these boards are actually a lot shorter than they were in MP 1 and 2 just because the items help you move through these areas faster.
I agree that there shouldn't be gigantic unbroken straightaways in Mario Party, but an analysis of the boards is incomplete without also touching on how the items affect gameplay.

I agree that Superstars' item system greatly improves the Mario Party 1 and Mario Party 2 boards, but because there isn't a guarantee that players will acquire an item, the boards should still be navigable without them.
Is Yoshi's Tropical Island more navigable with Double and Triple Dice Blocks? Of course. But if players don't have access to any of those items, they're still stuck in huge sections.
I admit I could've addressed the item system more, but my main goal was to remake the boards in a way that makes them more navigable-- at least according to the Mario Party game theory I whipped up.

For Yoshi's Tropical Island, I feel like having two junctions on each island before Bowser/Toad kind of defeats the purpose of the central swapping gimmick as players are far more likely to circumvent them entirely, even if there are more spaces between. Making each bridge go both directions already allows players to somewhat influence their fate depending on their position. If it were me, I would place those additional junctions immediately after Bowser/Toad -- You'll get a shortcut back to the bridge at the cost of missing Boo or Koopa.
Don't have any problems with the rest of your changes, though. Very interesting stuff :)

This was among the best review-type content I've seen on Mario Party. You have some beliefs about junctions that are well-reasoned and your edits are understandable (except I think you miss the point of the yoshi board). One way to consider long stretches with no junctions sometimes being okay is if that stretch is a punishment for taking some powerful route, such as the woody route leading to boo. Great content!

God I love your content as always. I never had particularly strong opinions about the Mario Party franchise, but it's very interesting to see an invested fan thoroughly examining strengths and weakness especially in this unique kind of new vs old format. Great vid, can't wait to see what you make next.

I always like to see your analysis on boards because it helps me know what to do and not do when making boards for MPB, a 1:1 physical adaptation of Mario Party I made earlier this year.
So, I just found it fun to comment what I'd do to Remake these boards based on that:
    *YTI* :
    - A junction in the extremes is a great idea, but it helps you avoid Bowser forever, so I'd make them Skeleton Gate exclusive.
    - The shop stays in its Superstars placement, and the second shop would be in a symmetrically equal place.
    - This allows the player to make a very important decision: - " Do I face Bowser to reach Important events (Boo/Koopa/Thwomp) or do I keep stalling until the Star switches? "- while slightly punishing the player for essentially avoiding a negative effect by making them buy multiple Skeleton Keys.
    - And if the double-way Thwomps do exist, then they allow you to escape the Bowser island while contributing to the Thwomp economy.
    *SL* :
    - This Remake is perfect. The added paths are symmetrical, make sense, and fix the long paths, while the Boo/Shop change add to the strategy found in the new changes.
    *PBC* :
    - I don't quite like your Remake since the Goomba Lotteries each favor one side greatly and both have a path that basically screws you over.
    - I'd keep the Superstars layout, however, the Whomp Toll is actually a very cool idea, since you could take the Shop route and take the Lottery risk, or go straight to Koopa and go the long way through the Piranha mine field.
    - Btw, I do agree on the second shop, so I'd place it somewhere after the second Happening pair to encourage Item play and make the game less boring.
    - Definitely making Lottery free, tho. Shop+10+20+20 are a lot of expenses.
    *WW* :
    - I gotta say, I like the new junctions, since they add more movility and agency, so I'd keep them.
    - I'd restore the bottom Monty Mole, since 3 shops really is too much, and the arrows now affect the new junctions.
    - Keep the other Superstars changes, since they help improve this otherwise very dull board.
    *HL* :
    - I think the changes made in Superstars are great. However, I'd move the middle bank to the top where Superstars added its new Bank.
    - As for a second shop, I'd put it in the top route that doesn't lead to Kamek+Mr.I so that the Whomp doesn't annoy too much.
    - And up the prices, because they're too low.
And that's it. Great video! The editing is cool.

It's interesting that you were more focused on fixing the old boards instead of critiquing the remakes. Like the Snifit Patrol dropping off players in totally different locations or how adding item slots/new items to MP1 and MP2 boards.

As I was playing through the Superstars boards, I was a little underwhelmed by how little was changed. I realized that if I just discussed the remakes the video would be both short and pointless, so I decided to make my own version of each of the boards. And I didn't address the mechanical changes (namely the revamped item system and lucky spaces) because I wanted the focus of this video to be the boards and how they were remade, not an analysis of the game's mechanics.

Ironic that my favourite boards were the ones you critiqued the most lol! Personally I also looked on how to remake the boards of the N64 Mario Party games, and I agree on some of your points, but I feel like you added way too many junctions to the boards.

I hate your peachs cake remake. The OG board was designed for 50 turns and watching some poor soul get trapped with bowers and miss the star was golden!
Good video... you do have a bit of an obsession with junctions and item shops

You think Peach’s Birthday Cake was bad, imagine they decided to use Wario’s Battle Canyon instead. It’s blasting, after blasting, after blasting to a random spot that’s a pain to predict!

Yeah, but Wario's Battle Canyon is a masochistic exploration in learned helplessness. Peach's Birthday Cake is just masochistic.

I wish they would have included one board from MP4 as it would have been cool to see one given the full 3D treatment.

I never played any of these boards when I was a kid because I wasn’t born until 2001, so my first one in the series was Mario Party DS.
Of the five of the boards, Peach’s Birthday Cake is the only one I would call shit, simply because of its samey factor. Yoshi’s Tropical Island has the same issue, but it’s not as boring because it is funny to trap the other plays on one side of the island when landing on an Event Space.
Hope there’s DLC with the game and Waluigi’s Island is added.

Hi Cowfoodyum! I've been watching a lot of your Mario Party videos. In a lot of the videos you claim that there x amount of of "bad" minigames. or that some of the minigames are "downright awful". I'm curious what goes into your criteria for a bad minigame. Still waiting on a reply from you!

    • @CowFoodYum
      @CowFoodYum  2 роки тому +1

A "bad" minigame either has poor controls, a poor mechanic, or some glaring oversight that ruins the whole thing. Bad controls aren't that common, but there are a lot of minigames with poor mechanics (Vicious Vending having players just spin the joystick once; The Beat Goes On going on for two to three minutes) or glaring oversights (Odd Card Out only registering the first input received; the Spinies in Crate in Peril being far too quick).

    • @BigShowGunnoe
      @BigShowGunnoe 2 роки тому

@@CowFoodYum thanks I understand! I was surprised at the number of minigames that you deemed bad in Mario Party 3, like frigid bridges, aces high and coconut conk! I can't decide which Mario Party is the best one, I think 7 is probably the most underrated one though.
