Made it with regular sandwich bread and it turned out a bit too dry, also only baked it for 20 minutes. If you're going to use regular thin bread, I recommend to add an extra spoon of custard before baking and trying to do 18 minutes.
And if you rather use fresher bread you can just stick it in the oven with the door a couple of inches open so that it dries a bit but watch it so it doesn't toast.
So in other words...if you know how to make French toast then this will be easy because only two aspects have changed; the bread you use and how you cook it
Yes you can I’ve done it several times without milk and it turned out perfect just add more butter or nonstick to the foil so you’re bread doesn’t stick

Oh thanks! That helped because I have gluten free bread which is a little thinner than regular wheat bread, so thanks for saying that!
