    I think that art is definitely a skill, but I do think that people can have the talent to learn faster than others

      I 100% agree that art is a skill not a talent however like anything; maths, English, sport- people can pick things up and learn quicker than others and I think the same goes for art.

    Leslie getting angry yet sounding happy is something. Like you can tell she's the kind of person that smiles when she's angry. It's wonderful.

    I agree 100%! It's a bit annoying when people go "I wish I could draw like you!!!" and they never even practice or attempt to draw. Because... no! If you really wished you could draw as well as someone, you'd be drawing right now and practicing and improving!
    It's also annoying when people think that artists are some sort of magical beings who are born with this incredible talent of drawing (I mean…no one thinks that about me bc I'm not that good xD But in general lol) when really, it's just a hell of a lot of practice!!
    Like I'm nowhere near a professional at art, I'm still a kid lol, but I've been drawing since…well I've been drawing since I was a tiny child, but have been taking lessons and being truly passionate about art since I was in 3rd grade. And, even after my art lessons ended, I've been drawing probably almost daily, or at least every few days for nearly the past two years :3 So, like, no. Don't tell me I'm so "talented," because drawing is something I've been working at for years, and though I'm nowhere near the skill level I'd like to be at, I've been practicing and improving a lot and it is a SKILL I am slowly starting to acquire :3
    Oops I went on a long rant, doubt anyone read this :') xDD

      Nicky32 Draws isn't wishing you could draw like someone else more or less a compliment. It's kinda rude to the person saying it that they haven't been trying. someone could be trying for years, still not get it, keep trying, say this comment, and then the other person just assumes that they're not trying with their own art. really who are any of us to assume that the person who says it is or isn't trying hard enough.
      also someone telling you that your talented isn't them saying that you didn't work hard on your art. it simply means you can do something well. compliments.
      maybe we should all learn to take harmless statements better. I constantly see post say "people don't compliment artist anymore, because they're scared they might offend the artist". I didn't believe that, until I actually saw artists who were offended by compliments. Like saying "you're talented" or "I wish I could do what you do" is taking away from you can do.

    • @nicolec.7753
      @nicolec.7753 8 років тому +5

      soul eater sun No no I never meant it was rude or anything aha sorry for being unclear. I mean, I don't get *offended* when someone says "I wish I could draw like you" like of course not! It's a compliment. Hell, I can't count the amount of times I'VE said that to someone. It just gets a tiny bit annoying (ah, not sure if 'annoying' is the perfect wording here) if you're always told that by people, because at some point you just wanna say "Well stop wishing and start practicing!!!" :P
      And when people say "you're so talented" *of course* I don't get offended, and of course I appreciate their compliment. It's just those people who say someone is talented and legitimately think they were born with the talent; most just use talented as a synonym for skilled. So yeah, obviously it's not offensive, just different wording would be better (not like like it even matters *that* much though tbh).
      Like, it's not that I necessarily get offended by the things I wrote in my comment, I was just highlighting small things in my rant, which honestly don't even bother me all that much, but are still worth bringing up :3

      Nicky32 Draws its annoying too when im in class and i go "ugh this didnt turn out the way i wanted" and ,y friend goes "hey its better than what i can do!" Because for their experience level, they're doing good. But for me, when ive been drawing my whole life, its not at the level of where i am. Im glad other people understand this too haha

    • @nicolec.7753
      @nicolec.7753 8 років тому +6

      Hyper Colors Yeah definitely. As much as I appreciate it, it gets a bit annoying when my friends go "no no that looks so amazing, it's better than anything I could draw" every time I say I dislike something I drew. Like I appreciate the compliment and it reminds me that even though my art looks really crappy to me sometimes, a lot of other people like it. But my non-artist friends don't get that, as an artist it's *good* to not be satisfied with your art. If every artist thought their art was perfect, no one would ever improve.
      Thinking that your art is bad is often a great thing, because it shows that you recognize that something is wrong and understand that there's room for improvement. Hence why some people just starting to draw think their art is amazing, while some long-time, very good artists think their art is bad.

    I strongly agree with art being a skill not a talent, because I always get so angry when my mom says I'm talented and so far I have four years of drawing in and it's not all that great. It's something I worked hard to get to, to reach, and her saying it's a talent really invalidates my experience. Thank you so much for making this video.

      kanehide 4 life There are just some people who think that talent and skill are the same thing. And in a way, they are similiar; they're both used to convey awe and appreciation. Everyone in my family calls it a talent -- even my mother, who's an artist. And I don't care. It's clear that THEY care and that THEY'RE proud. It's just semantics.

    I needed this, last week I stopped drawing because I was just so stressed and sad because I couldn't draw hair.
    And seeing my friend improve so fast compared to me, it just made me lose all motivation and will to draw...
    It's so hard and tiring, but I just want to put my stories on paper, I'd hate for me to die and for my stories to die with me...

      LeslieLu Marie >_< I've practiced for around 6 years now (when I was7) and now I'm 13.
      And I'd say my art is pretty decent, but I always mess up the shading and coloring.
      I also get mad when people say they are horrible and have only drawn for a month.
      And people ask me "omg how can you draw like this??" And my answer is always "with my hand... and a pencil... And you know.. 6 years of practice." 👌

      When I began drawing, I was obviously really bad. 7 years later, the only reason I know what the drawings are is because I remember what I wanted to draw.

    One of my inspiration in animation (i want to work in animation one day) is Kekeflipnote- he has been animating since he got a DSI and the flipnote software. He never had a talent, he was just ... practicing and messing around with the software. Why people thinks that drawing is easy, its like violon or piano, a huge part is learning. I think most of people thinks that drawing is for kids, we see lots of young persons of 13-14 years old can create masterpieces with internet. Drawing is seen like a silly passion rather hardworking for long years. PEOPLE ARE STILL EXPECTING VISUAL ARTISTS TO DO PICTURES FOR FREE LIKE IT TAKES 10 MINUTES TO DO IT.

      Je me souviens aussi de Keke sur Flipnote :D Il m'a beaucoup inspiré et c'est limite grace a lui que j'ai commencé a dessiner tous les jours x) dans ma tête c'était : "un jour je dessinerais et j'animerais aussi bien que lui!!" (j'étais jeune xD) C'est cool de voir des gens qui se souviennent de lui cest pas très souvent (c'est la premiere fois en fait ^^').

      oOAbsolOo Han c'est cool ça ! Perso j'ai toujours aimé dessiner (ma drogue haha) mais c'est vraiment mui qui m'a mis l'idée en tête de travailler dans l'animation. Il est encore actif sur twitter et tumblr si tu savais pas. Tu as commencé à sérieusement dessiner du coup ? o: Et si ça se trouve, un jour oui tu animeras aussi bien que lui, on sait jamais ce qui peut arriver p:

      @absol9125 8 років тому

      Terry Ouiii le dessin c'est une drogue xD Même avant je dessinais mais pas autant, c'est vraiment grace aux gens comme lui sur Flipnote que je suis devenue passionnée par le dessin ^^ je savais pas qu'il était encore actif faudrait que j'aille voir! :3
      Ouais maintenant je dessine tous les jours (depuis flipnote donc ca doit faire 5 ans je crois).
      J'imagine que ça doit être pareil pour toi ^-^
      On a le même objectif de travailler dans l'animation en fait c'est ce que j'aimerai faire aussi ! x))

    • @terryalintheocean9574
      @terryalintheocean9574 8 років тому

      oOAbsolOo Ah on est d'accord 8)) Ça bouffe trop de temps ce truc là
      Ça me rappelle sa vision de l'artiste, où de base on aime juste "dessiner" puis on rencontre d'autres artistes et des autres qu'on va inspirer à son tour.
      Quand on est aussi passionné on abandonne pas comme ça ;)
      Ouaah fait longtemps ! Y'a 5 ans j'étais encore en primaire, ça daaate. Moi je suis devenu plus sérieux y'a 3 ans. Je me demande quel type de niveau tu as maintenant haha ^^.
      Han cool ! Si ça se trouve on travaillera dans la même boîte aussi (je rigole)

    I think a lot of people mistake "talent" for the ability to knowingly improve your skills. You could draw a thousand faces and not improve a bit if you keep doing the same thing. At that point you're basically doing robot work, just following a flowchart of previous knowledge. You have to understand that a drawing consist of many different components like anotomy, perspective, composition etc. Someone who recognizes their individual errors in these components will surely be able to improve much faster. What people that give up drawing lack is the skill to learn, not the skill to draw.
    If you can write a signature you could basically do everything you did in this video because it's just circles and lines. What most people don't realize is that being able to SEE is what makes your ability to express yourself on a canvas. Practice, research and patience makes perfect.
    (Btw, love your vids. Recently started getting into digital art and the switch from Paint.net to FireAlpaca has felt great. )

    I remember reading something, I believe it was a comment from an artist who studied under a master animator, and they recalled that the most influential thing said to them by that animator was "I have drawn more terrible pictures than you've drawn pictures, period." I'm sure that quote is off a tad but the weight of the message is still there. It takes persistence to become good at anything. Not even to become great or excellent, just good. Some people are more creative than others or more artistically inclined, but that doesn't mean it takes a special person to be an artist. Just a diligent one. Someone, as you said, who is willing to work, put in the time, and go through those periods of self-loathing and extreme criticism. I'm certainly not artistically inclined, but I've worked my butt off to get where I am now and I'm still not where I want to be. Another quote I was told about was from a master painter. He's in his late 70's or something. Anyway, someone once asked him why is it that despite all that he has accomplished with his artwork is he still practicing everyday? He replied "Because I'm starting to see improvement." Pretty good answer if you ask me.

    I started drawing in 3rd Grade and I drew horribly back then.Same poses,Same expressions .I was losing hope that theres a chance I'll improve.I stopped drawing in 4th grade but tried drawing again in 5th grade.I improved a little bit not that much.I started drawing digitally back in May 2015 which I mostly drew in a style I didnt really like.I just drew in that style because I thought I was gonna be famous.But,I started to try out new things and practice new expressions and poses.
    Back then I just did my art because I want to get famous.I didnt take it seriously.
    But now,I pretty much draw with passion.Everyday I try to improve.Trying to find a style that Im mostly comfortable with
    All I want to say if you want draw good.It takes time.Yeah there will be times where you get pissed at something because you didnt do something right but you need those mistakes just so you can try and fix them later.
    Thank you for covering this topic.This should have been said a long time ago :)

    'Ohmigosh! You should be an artist! You are so talented!'
    Fluffing. No.
    First of all, just because I'm not around 20 years old or something, doesn't mean I'm not an artist.
    And it took me hours and hours, pouring all my tears, blood, and sweat into both my Animations and Art.
    But let's throw that out the window to tell you that you came out of the womb with a canvas and cut-off ear.

    I'm glad that there's a video on this. Last night I found a Ted talk thing where a guy was showing people who thought they couldn't draw that they could. All he did was instruct them on where to place lines and BOOM they had a cool little cartoon. Yet people in the comments kept complaining that they couldn't draw and that drawing is something God given. It's not that they can't draw- literally all you have to do is scribble a few lines on a piece of paper and that's considered a drawing- it's that they didn't have as much experience as someone who is "talented" and when they compared their drawing to that of the more experienced artist they'd say they couldn't do it. I HATE when people say they can't draw. Unless you physically can't pick up a pen or pencil or anything like that then you CAN draw. Stop making inability the same as not putting in effort, it makes it seem like all of the years that I, as well as other artists, have put into practicing art a complete waste of time because our skills were "God given"

    I liked drawing since FOREVER! But when I started to get "better" was when I was 5 years old and a new girl came to kinder garden! She did "AMAZING" drawings! (That's what I thought then, but they are the average 12 year old art) I then started to copy everything she drew! And after I few years, I've won a few drawing contests! And that motivated me! Then the magical world of UA-cam showed me an animation. The art style was amazing! I wanted to draw like that! Then I looked deeper and deeper and deeper into the art world and BAM!
    I'm still waiting for my Wacom tablet... 😓

Since then I have improved immensely, and a lot of people have complimented me on my designs saying that they could never draw like I do. One question tho, Why is it that if not all, but most artists call their own art 'not that decent' and when someone compliments them they're like "n o I'm not good"?
    And when they argue with another artist it's like
    "I'm not good, you are."
    "Noooo you are better than I"
    "Nooooooooo you are"
    "N O"

      i know this is super old, but i just watched the video and wanted to hop in on the discussion haha. it really comes from a place of being your own worst critic. when you create something from start to finish and you've seen it in every state of progress and have put in the hours analyzing it for things to fix until you're incredibly burnt, it's easy for you to see it in a very harsh, critical light. someone who only sees the finished product will see it as something totally fresh and fully developed. they also won't have the insight of your mental process of creation so the mystery of it kind of adds to this whole sense of "wow this is so great!" or "i don't know how they come up with this stuff, it's so next level" etc etc.
      when you get stuck in that state of being hyper critical of your work, combined with that constant feeling of needing to improve and never being at the level you want to be, it can be hard to take compliments uh.. gracefully, i guess. some people do fish for compliments, but most of the time that's not the reason they say their art isn't very good.

    Hey, I just wanted to say that I love your work and you seem really nice and cute annnnnddd yeah
    This picture is so great that kinda makes me want to draw my own phone case as well haha
    Also what you're saying is just so true, I'm tired of hearing friends of mine saying "wa you're so talented I can't do this I'm so bad at drawing blabla" well yeah, because i work towards it ?? You can't anything granted, no one starts off doing wonderful and amazing things and that's a great thing that artists are so harsh on themselves, we always want to improve !! Well enough rambling, I'm really glad I subscribed to your channel, looking foward more work (also I love your OCs I'm probably gonna watch the videos where you talk about them haha). Have a nice daaayyy~

    I agree that practicing is such a _huge_ aspect to drawing. If you don't practice, you won't get to where you personally want to be in regards to drawing.
    I know this is a slightly different situation, but over the last 2/3 years I've been into creating pixel art. And it's only within the last 2/3 months that I'm trying to practice traditional drawing more and more (aiming to get into digital art but I'm trying not to get _too_ ambitious right now lmao). I don't consider myself any good, but I'm practicing! Back to the pixel art thing, I can't express enough how important practice is. I still stuck at pixel art, the things I can draw are very limited, but there's such a huge difference from my work in 2014 compared to my work towards the end of 2016. And comparing them helps motivate me a lot, because it shows that improvements are possible but as long as you practice!
    So personally, drawing is a skill rather than a talent in my eyes. It's a skill you develop over time and it's never going to be something you are immediately good at. And this is going to sound cheesy, but I guess that what makes drawing fun? Like, the experience, working on something, developing your style. It just seems so fun. ;;'

    This is so true!! Well idk if I have the right to say so, I haven't been drawing as long as u have but I have been drawing for about 6 years (not exactly daily but more than twice a week) and I am pleased that I do see improvements in my art, I'm still a long way from you tho. My friends always complain to me about how much I'm better than them at drawing and that I'm 'lucky' that I can draw well. I find it annoying that a lot of people at my school are always comparing one another in art skill, and seem to end up giving up on drawing because they aren't as 'talented' as someone else.

    2. I completely agree with you! Drawing is a skill, not a talent. Many of my friends lately have been saying to me, "I was good at drawing as a kid, but now I can't even draw stick figures," and "I wish I could draw." And I'm like, that's b/c you haven't practiced!
    I didn't get where I am by sitting around, saying that I can't draw, & never trying. Sure, there are times when I'm not happy w/my art & think it could be so much better. Heck, I think that most of the time, but I'm not going to get any better unless I draw!

      JazzCatt Right? Most of the time some people compliment my instrumental abilities (I want to be a musician when I grow up, with art or video game stuff as a backup but art is mainly a hobby for me.), but I personally don't think I'm good, or at least good ENOUGH. People shouldn't put themselves down, but at the same time they need to keep motivating themselves by telling themselves they can be better than they already are. 😊

      Infamous Onion Cutting Ninja! I feel your pain in a way. I play clarinet and I've been playing since middle school. I auditioned and got into the band. That only happened because I was in a chorus in elementary school. I was terrified of singing alone, but I was in a group of people. Same with playing clarinet. After a while of performing, if you get comfortable on what you're playing or singing, or if you're comfortable with the group you're in, your stage fright will start disappearing in group environments on stage. Just beware being alone! I still have anxiety when I have to present projects, ESPECIALLY in my spanish class... 😅

    • @ThePsychicClarinetist
      @ThePsychicClarinetist 8 років тому

      Infamous Onion Cutting Ninja! Thanks for the reassuring words! It's just that I've always been nervous when a crowd is watching me alone. It doesn't help that I don't know half of the people in my class. 😅 I'll try to shut out the other students even more. I just feel confident in a group and when I've been doing well with that group. 😊 As for the whole instrument problem, you can still try to learn the notes and chords on that toy guitar you have until you can get that new, non-abused one! Then you can get lessons if you think it'll help. 😁

      I'm 13 ( soon 14 ), and I started doing digital art at the start of this year, thanks to my older brother who got me a drawing tablet as a birthday gift.
      The drawing tablet I've got is a Intuos Art, and I really love it ( just saying so you know xD ).
      For your information, Wacom is the most popular brand so buying a drawing tablet from there would be good, but you can buy any tablet you'd like that works really.
      As for the art program, Medibang Paint Pro (it's free, don't mind the name) is my absolute all time favorite, but Firealpaca (which Leslielu marie uses, and which is made by the same people) is also good, but both programs are focused on a a bit different things.
      MedibangPaintPro is more focused on painting ( it has a lot of good custom brushes, and you can make your own if you'd like to ) and making manga pages ( it's an option if you'd want to ) , while Firealpaca is more focused on animating ( you can draw in it in just the same way as in MedibangPaintPro, it's just that it doesn't have that many custom brushes, though you can make your own, and the animating thing is also an option. You'll get an onion skin mode which you can activate which turns every layer or layer group into a frame each ).
      I really love those 2 programs xD

    I feel like what you said about a person being born with the passion of becoming an artist is very true, maybe even at a genetic level. For example, my Father went to school for art because he really loved it. Now even though my dad was an artist he never introduced us to it, it was something we decided on our own, it wasn't until I was probably 8 or 9 when I found out my dad went to art college since he worked in the post office for almost 40 years. Me and my older sister are both artist in our own way, My sister did cake decorations and I do drawings, I knew from a very young age that I had this passion to draw. My art skill I was not born with, either was my sister but I can feel like our passion was there since we knew from a very young age this is what we enjoyed. My sister knew she wanted to go for culinary. My sister worked hard, and I worked for years to get to the level I am now. Our skill wasnt something we were born with, but our passion as artist was.

    So I'm in my late teens and I started developing my interest for drawing just about two years ago. The major reason why I wanna be serious about it is because I've always wanted to make art as a gift to people to make them happy. I've done many drawings and had them as gift but I've always thought they're all bad. I'd hardly have the motivation to practice more, and I give up easily. I'm waiting for that day I finally have all the determination and put smiles on people's faces.

    In regards to the whole realizing that you won't start out great thing, I learned about Jerry Seinfeld's method for Creative Success from Game Grumps (where you basically set aside your end goal and focus primarily on accomplishing one task every single day, taking away the pressure of worrying about your future because you focus on the present while naturally improving); it definitely helps keep you motivated to keep drawing since you naturally want to keep the chain going (though getting back on his really hard if you break it). I also think a part of being motivated to continue doing stuff has to do with just your personality; where some people get frustrated because they're jealous of people who are better than them, others, like myself, don't even _think_ about being envious of their skill; those people end up becoming friends to whom you can actually show your art.
    Also, unrelated, but it's very strange listening to someone who doesn't curse. I'm so used to listening to Arin and Dan that I fully expected you to say, "Well... Fuck you," at 5:54, lol.

    Since when I was a kid, people told me that drawing was something they couldn't do, that I was lucky, that it was just something I was born with, and those kind of comments just frustrate me so much, because when I was 3 years old I could only draw stick figures, and what I do now is much more elaborated and difficult. I've worked really hard on that, it's not something magical that appears in the womb of your mom and then an artist with awesome skills is born. I wish people understood this, because when I tell them to practice, they try ONLY ONCE, and then they see that it is something they have to put their effort in and give up.
    I guess that will never change...

    Omg you were watching Markimoo while you drew!! Also I agree, art is something you work towards and when someone who hasn't practiced their whole life comes to you and says, 'I can't draw anything, look I don't even know how to doodle on a page!' It really annoys me because *they haven't practiced and spent their time to actually be able to create something*
