      +555 Gear The kind of freak that doesn't want their tax dollars going to YET ANOTHER government Bailout to Chrysler. They've already had 2 stays of execution, and each time they lost their focus and dived right back into the ground.

      Because economy cars were what made Chrysler successful in the 80s and now that they're sinking into the quicksand again they're making cars for Peter Penispump. Mr. Regular doesn't dislike the Hellcat, he dislikes that Chrysler thought this was a good idea.

    • @Eric__J
      @Eric__J 9 років тому +28

      +555 Gear They make some, they're just shit. Chrysler hasn't designed a decent car that wasn't at least partially derived from a Daimler product in 20 years (1995). That's Mr. Regular's problem (and, realistically, every American taxpayer's problem).

    The other day I watched the EVO car of the year video, for some reason, and what struck me most was the actual banality of the beauty on display. During the video one of the drivers said that he recalls getting the COTY issue when he was a kid and just getting sucked into the images. He said they are in the business of conveying that experience. I'm not the one to talk about the print issue of EVO, but their video certainly falls way below the mark. With the gorgeous videography and scenery and a lineup of cars to get the fear of god into you, they themselves yet seem to sadly struggle at making any sense of it all. And the experience is conveyed with nothing but a revolving stream of vapid superlatives, which leaves us feeling none the richer for it. We need writing, good and thoughtful writing in order to get any meaningful perspective. We need English majors and the like in the car world, people who read and understood the classics, those who deal with our attempts to express the seemingly inexpressible, to convey things unconveyable by images or data.
    So keep doing the good lord's work peeps. Superlative video.

      +SlidTossedAccord -Couldn't agree more. Chrysler was so slimy to their shareholders that they tried to disguise the takeover by Daimler as a "Merger of Equals," and when Kerkorian and Iacocca warned shareholders to sell or join with them and then Chryco heads smeared the S out of them. Few years later, when the deal was done and DamnearChrysler went from "most profitable per unit sold" to least, and Daimler had to pay Kerkorian & Iacocca north of $400 million in penalties, seems Cerebus ("Kirk & Lee, Inc") got the last laugh. Never confuse old Mopar with the new company.

    Im glad the Hellcat exists. The real American muscle cars are getting extinct. Then again,that's my opinion. Sure u have the Mustang and the camaro ,but the Mustang has gotten to the point where it's on par with the Corvette,because they made the Mustang a sports car. Camaro wise,it's still trying to be the big bad muscle car,but slowly is trying to become an athlete. The Challenger IMO is the last real muscle car still going on. A muscle car should be the big car that u'd take on a long trip through America not because of the MPGs or because it would be practical. It's because it's striking,has a big presence and it's the kind of car that u wouldn't mind beating a bit or getting dirty,because it's supposed to be a rough car. It's that or I just love Vanishing Point too much and have that kind of image of what a Muscle car should be like. So well played from Chrysler for keeping the Challenger truest to it's original form.

    • @mzaite
      @mzaite 9 років тому +22

      +stiliqn007 Mustang's and Camaro were never muscle cars. The Torino and Chevelle were the respective muscle cars, just as the Charger was Chryslers.
      The Pony cars, the Mustang, Camaro, original Challenger (ish) were all more well rounded cars better designed for driving than dragstrip madness.
      I will agree the Charger/Challenger is the last Muscle Car, but Ford and Chevy gave up on muscle cars back in the late 70's (Buick GNX not withstanding). They focused on Pony cars after the oil crisis and never looked back. Chrysler didn't get the memo and had to have it's ass bailed out in 1980 and again in 2008.

      The era of the muscle and pony cars are dead. I own a 2017 Mustang and I love it. Our American muscle cars are better classified now as sports cars. Which to me is fine, getting us away from that straight line only mentality. They now go fast and turn, both left and right!

    I think it's an age thing. I got my license in 1986, when cars were literally piles of shit. The glorious past of muscle cars made the present even more hurtful. If you'd had told me then that someday, life would be good again and there would be hemis and Challengers again, I wouldn't have believed it. But if you would have told me they would make fucking 10 second 700 horsepower Hemis with stick shifts and blowers, I would have cried with joy. Then if you'd have told me they would be relatively affordable, about the same price as a gussied up pickup truck, I would have kicked you in the dick for being cruel.
    Of course, if you had told me back then I could watch unlimited free porn on my telephone, I would have given up cars and simply masturbated all day every day.

    I love the Hellcat.
    I hate that Chrysler decided to make the Hellcat with United-States tax money doing the same error that made them bailout two times. Instead of doing a proper econo-car that, a higher percentage of people is going to buy to actually save Chrysler from bailout.
    And i'm 100% with him. A higher percentage of the population nowadays buy cars with two factors MPG (L/100km) and price(resale value included)
    The cheapest car that Chrysler sells currently is the Dodge Dart with a starting MSRP at ±17 000$ and has a highway fuel efficiency of 36MPG (±6.3L/100km). A lot of other brands can sell cheaper and do even better, that's where Chrysler lacks, and this is why they will bailout again.
    Of course there's the Fiat500 ! It's at ±16 000$ it's less economic (34MPG(±7L/100km)) then the Dart AND it's smaller, what's the point, really ?

      This car is basically a prosthetic dick, because anyone who would ever buy this car, or anything like it, obviously needs that level of compensation. In reality, they probably had a really hilarious problem telling their parents that the reason they failed Phys-Ed in middle school, was because they said "No, I'll shower at home". Just a box of pure shame, and penis envy.

      +Skylar Garrett Not the point at all. He was just saying that it's easy to make a lot of horsepower these days. Heck it's easier to make a reliable muscle car with big power as well. Yes you can point to that one but that's not the case for all. If power were the gauge for all production cars than Mercedes and Bugatti would be the undisputed kings. Both make the cars with the biggest numbers. Do you think of them that way? Not unless you are Jeremy Clarkson.

    • @herranton
      @herranton 9 років тому +6

      I thought it was making in the 600s when it got on the dyno. And it's cheap and easy to make an LS/LQ reliable, even turbocharged/supercharged. GM did it themselves with the zr1. not rocket science. and you don't need zr1 money. The point is that if you want a 700 hp pos, there is no reason to pay the 70odd grand for a hellcat or worse, a charger. Don't get me wrong, the Charger is the best rental car ever conceived, but I wouldn't want to own one, and certainly not one with 700hp...

    While I agree with all the points in the video, I will say this. The hellcat in 2024, now on its way out, has become a staple in car culture. It went from an attempt with dodge to appeal back to the classic muscle cars of old and revive muscle car culture to now being the symbol for take overs and felony evasion with a side of drug possession with the intent to distribute. Regardless, the desire to own one has never left me as it represents the pinnacle of the muscle car. The challenger, and subsequently the charger, have stayed true to what makes a muscle car a muscle car, while the mustang and camaro diverged and went more into the sports car category.
    To classify in my eyes as a muscle car, it takes more than just "have big V8 motor and be American." Muscle cars had certain stylized lines to them that made them seem bigger than life, at their core, they are not supposed to be track cars, they are supposed to be "how can we go as fast as we can in a straight line at a drag strip or on a deserted road for as cheap as possible." Suspension, weight loss, even brakes are an afterthought for these cars. The challenger and charger exemplify this. How many cars do you know that can go 0-60 in 3 seconds that are this cheap?
    What comes to bite these cars are a combination of mopar quality control, which has been a thing for decades, and the modern owners of them. I looked today at charger hellcats just for kicks as I do want to pick one up eventually as the hellcat is a dream car of mine (first it was the challenger, but the charger is far more practical for me these days). The average price of these cars, even the ones as far back as 2016 was still 45-50k, which says something about the value these retain. The problem was I could find seldom one that didn't have an accident reported on the title because people keep wrecking these things for driving like idiots. I am honestly saddened by it.
    The challenger and charger had to come to an end in production because they had been running for so long on one generation, but also because of the massive emissions hits that Chrysler was taking by keeping these in production. The EPA comes for us all in this ever green enforced world. Soon will be gone the days of the V8s rumbling in our streets, replaced by vacuum cleaner EV noises (or silence), and the soft putter of little inline 4 cars. Only one still building the V8 is Ford, but they too will pass.
    There is a reason that this car has been hanging over my desk since I was 14. I still want one.

    Dodge is a division of Fiat-Chrysler, and each division has its own niche. Fiat makes the economy cars and subcompacts, Alfa Romeo makes exotic Italian performance and luxury cars, Chrysler is a luxury based main stream manufacturer, and Dodge makes muscle cars. There's no reason for dodge to make an economy car because Fiat already does. It's like complaining about Michael Kors not making cheaper handbags because that's what Americans want.

    • @killawhale8726
      @killawhale8726 6 років тому +3

      Your argument makes sense until you realize that the economy car that Fiat sells is the 500. Nobody wants to buy those, not in the U.S. It works fine in europe, but it's too small and Italian to be taken seriously here. The size is a big problem especially when you could, for the same price, buy a
      Ford Fiesta HATCHBACK which has far more usable space, four doors, better fuel economy (not the ST, although it is very close) and reliability (at least with the stick-shift).
      The important detail in this economy car requirement is *a sizable amount of people must desire to own one.* FCA makes two real "economy cars": the Dodge Dart, and the Fiat 500. One sucks and the other sucks and is too small for realistic practical use. The main problem is that dodge would much rather advertise/develop its Charger, Challenger, and SUVs, and Fiat has a joke of a reputation in America. The 500's style only really resonates with Moms because it's """""cute""""" while dad has a big ol' trugg. It's also not a good thing to have a joke that goes "What does Fiat stand for: Fix it agian, Tony!"
      FCA is just lacking the competitiveness versus other brands that do economy better like...everybody esle, except maybe Nissan or Mitsubishi, and at least Nissan tries. Let's just say this, if I wanted a good economy car, I'd buy a Honda, Ford or Toyota, and a product of FCA would be far at the back of the list.

    Ummm,
    ok, I love this channel, and just about every video you post. I've spent hours watching your videos, and loving every minute of it. So I'm anything but a troll. Honestly, I'm a fan.
    That being said, that video was confusing. You seem to get what "Muscle Car" is all about, but then hate on it, while at the same time liking it... *shakes head* What?...
    I know you are a smart guy, so what gives? I know you understand the concept of halo product. So lets take a look at some of your questions... Can Chrysler build a "normal car"? - So lets focus on their Dodge brand sense that is what the Challenger is, and the Chrysler brand is their luxury line. The Dodge line up currently consists of 7 vehicles. Yes, they have the Viper and Hellcat lines, but those are the Halo products. The excitement behind the brand. I'm not going to explain this more, because I know you understand this. So lets ignore the Viper for a minute. That leaves us with 6 vehicles. Challenger, starts at $27k, 19/30 mpg. A great choice if you want something with style and excitement, that can also serve as an everyday driver. Yes, you can get into the higher trim levels like the Hellcat and things will start to get crazy. But that shouldn't slam the entire brand. Charger, starts at $28k, 19/31 mpg. Durango, starts at $30.5k, 18/25h mpg. Journey, starts at $20.7k 19/26 mpg. Caravan, starts at 21.8k, 17/25 mpg. Finally the Dart, starting at $16.5k 28/41 mpg.
    Doesn't seem like an absurd lineup to me.
    The Dart starts at $16k, and gets 28 city and 41 on the highway. That's cheaper than the current Corolla and it gets better mileage. This is a very "Normal" car... So is the Journey for that matter, it's cheaper than a RAV4, while competing with the Highlander. What about the Caravan? If this isn't "Normal" then I don't know what is. Boring yes, but normal, very. I hate mini vans! But I'll look anyways! It's $6k cheaper than the Sienna, and they both suck, and you'll hate every minute being in them. Winner, Dodge.
    You also said that they are "circling the drain again". Umm, did you check sales figures at all?
    - "FCA US LLC today reported U.S. sales of 185,035 units, an 8 percent increase compared with sales in June 2014 (171,086 units), and the group's best June sales since 2006."
    - "Challenger sales were up 56 percent in June, the muscle car's fifth sales record this year."
    Sales numbers agree with me. Chrysler is doing great. Showing double digit increases year over year for many of their models.
    - "Journey sales were up 32 percent"
    - "Through the first four months of 2014, Dart sales had tumbled 29% to just 22,098 units. But year-over-year volume increased in May, June July, and August (16%, 12%, 23%, and 22% respectively). The month of May, in fact, marked the Dart’s best-ever performance up to that point with 8644 sales. After a brief September decline, the Dart once again entered a period in which sales increased, rising 32% in the fourth-quarter with plenty of help from November, when 9012 Dart sales marked the nameplate’s best-ever U.S. sales performance."
    Can't make an economy car Americans what to buy? Are you sure about that?
    You also mentioned QC, stating that they didn't care about it. How can you really say that? Get into a pre 2010 Dodge and then get into a post 2011. Can you honestly tell me you don't see a HUGE turn around? I'm not saying they are perfect (lmao), far from it, but I also give credit where credit is due. They have made an effort to change their ways that can't be ignored.
    - "The Challenger earned the top spot in the Edmunds.com 2015 Best Retained Value Awards in the Entry Sports Car category last month, and was best in the Midsize Sporty Car segment in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study."
    I don't know dude. That was strange. And Yes, I have a Charger, but that fact doesn't void what I'm saying. The facts speak for themselves. I'm no fan boy for Dodge. This is my first Dodge car ever.

      Sketchy oh, no not at all. - and I agree, 707 is absurd. But then, it isn't trying to be a regular car by any means. An $80k price tag isn't normal by my budget. lol
      We could make an argument that they should drop the Viper now that the Hellcat is here, because, you really only need one Halo product. But slamming the hole company because of one purposefully outrageous product, seems unfair. Do we slam GM because it makes the Corvette and Z28?
      DeftonesFan867 No, Chrysler isn't a global sales leader, but when were they? And more importantly, do we really want them to be? - I mean, do we really need another car company making copies of the latest Accord and Camry? I like that Dodge is a bit different, and that they offer crazy, wild and absurd things. I like that they don't follow the crowd and give us cookie cutter cars like so many others.
      Normal people will never be able to have an exotic car. Most of us can't afford it. But I would offer that cars like the Challenger, Mustang, Camaro and maybe even the Charger are the exotic cars for us regular car guys.
      And for that, I'm grateful. :)

      ever seen how cheap a used Chrysler anything is? dodge isn't known for build quality, or reliability, or cars really... I had a dodge neon. worst car ever. water pump went out, crashed the valves since the timing belt also drives the water pump. $3k later and 20,000 miles later, water pump went out again. I replaced everything with dodge factory parts. I still owed money on the car, so another $2500 later... had to replace the head cause the machine shop couldn't fix it. this time 13k miles later, it ate the water pump. it's a freaking miracle neons ever accrued mileage. mine went to the junk yard with 120k miles onto it. I put over $10k into that stupid car. in the end, I was glad to get the $120 out of it.
      it also ate tires, the camshaft was retained in place by the camshaft position sensor, which got eaten every 1,000 to 5,000 miles, the body was rusted badly, the light bulbs melted the tail lights and the electrics worked when they felt like it. the alternator died 3 times and the battery would go dead due to a short in the wiring between thr battery and the fuse box. car randomly shut off, or lost headlights, or gauges whenever it felt like it. sometimes hanging on the dash, tugging on the wires to the fuse box, kicking the car or letting it sit overnight fixed it, temporarily.
      the worst part of it all was the fuel economy. it got 23 city and 21 highway that's to its slushbox 3spd automatic NON-overdrive transmission. I got better gas mileage out of my v-8, city and highway.
      it's hilarious how cheap 2-3 year old chargers and 300's go for. makes ya wonder why people buy them new. overall, that neon was the first and LAST dodge if ever drive. I wouldn't let a friend park one in my driveway when they came to visit.

    I saw the Hellcat as Chrysler's swan song. V8's days are numbered now that the big three have figured out how to make a six banger perform and sound just as good, if not better, than a v8. So they let their Mopar performance division go nuts one last time before moving on to Eco friendly performance technology or closing it down for good (only time will tell).
    You are right, nobody needs 707hp for daily use, and most non-car people will say it's vulgar and excessive. But for car people we just see it as a refreshing throwback to a time when gas was cents, and auto makers were fudging their car's performance figures to help owners get by insurance premiums. Much like most of today's pop culture, the Hellcat is a rebooted nostalgic throwback to an era where torque was king and nobody cared about miles to the gallon.
    Great review !

      I'm no Chrysler expert, but from what I've gathered the Challenger and Charger share a platform underneath. So basically it's a 2 door car sitting on that gigantic 4 door Charger platform. Throw in a huge V8 and Dodge Ram size body panels and voilà, another 4,000 pound hunk of Chrysler horse shit.

      +Charles Flaherty 100% agree. IF people wanted the economy cars so bad, Chrysler wouldn't be focusing the Dodge brand the way they do. On that side note, the whole Fiat Chrysler brand is just that, focused. They have one brand focused on the smaller econo cars - Fiat, one for offroad - Jeep, one on luxury - Chrysler, one on trucks - Ram, and one on higher performance/more fun - Dodge. Why? Because not having this focus and having half a dozen of the same cars all rebadged for their different brands is what was killing the company in the first place! Their current strategy is bringing in the sales like never before, so the whole Circling the drain crap Mr.Regular is saying is currently going on is just getting pulled out of his ass, and has no basis in reality.

    • @adamtrombino106
      @adamtrombino106 8 років тому +1

      +Charles Flaherty Agreed. Before Chrysler sold out, it said it wanted the Dodge Division to be the performance arm of Chrysler. FCA said Ok we'll run with that. The Dart is a huge disaster here in the States, whereas all Challenger models sell well. Here in Chicago, 1 must wait for Scat Pack, SRT and yes Hellcats to be built and delivered, and the cost is extreme. But various versions of the R/T's and standard models can be had n/p. All day long 1 can get any Dart model they want. So what is that saying? Who wants an economy car based machine, when 1 can simply wait for a hyper Challenger that gets no real mileage, is harder to park and see out of, and is a cop magnet? WE do! I've owned several throw away K cars of the 80's and even the vid mentioned Neon.. Complete crap every one. Now I own a 09 Challenger R/T 6 speed.. and it's FUN. It's the kind of car the makes 1 want to go on a road trip; have the Sunday drive. Can anyone say that about an economy car? Phone call.. " Hi, I'm in my Aries... I'm in traffic.. What's for dinner?"
