In this scene, John (Dan Levy) comforts Abby (Kristen Stewart) and reminds her that everyone's coming out story is different. Happiest Season is now streaming, only on Hulu.
    ABOUT HAPPIEST SEASON
Meeting your girlfriend’s family for the first time can be tough. Planning to propose at her family’s annual Christmas dinner - until you realize that they don’t even know she’s gay - is even harder. When Abby (Kristen Stewart) learns that Harper (Mackenzie Davis) has kept their relationship a secret from her family, she begins to question the girlfriend she thought she knew. Happiest Season is a holiday romantic comedy that hilariously captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.

Being straight and never really being able to understand the gravity of what it must be like coming out to parents and family, I really feel like john was able to put it in the easiest to understand way I've ever heard of seen. Happiest season was one of the most unexpectedly pleasant surprises I've had in awhile

Is it kind of weird that I appreciated the fact that Abby really was an orphan?
Throughout the movie, I felt like there was gonna be this big reveal that Abby had come out to her parents on Christmas, only to be kicked out and rejected by them, and that’s why she disliked Christmas. I was sincerely surprised to find out the orphan side of her story was actually true. But I kinda appreciate for two reasons:
    A) It was a side of her separate from her sexuality, and showed her personality was based around more than just it.
    B) It gave her a real, grounded read for disliking Christmas. It wasn’t like other cheesy Christmas movies where the character is just grumpy, or didn’t get the present she wanted, or something silly. She’s reminded of her parents’ death every time she sees people celebrating like they would.

The moment when he says the details about how it’s a terrifying moment, that little beat before you say it, all i could think(and what I hope Abby was thinking) was that Harper didn’t get that chance. Her sister outed her and forced her into it. Such a good movie.

I really hope through this scene more people would understand that people like Harper deserve love and support, despite the horrible decisions they made while being put in those positions. She never stopped loving Abby she just didn't want to lose her family, and to fix this inner conflict is far from easy.

While it would be awesome to see where these characters are now i think a sequel is not necessary. The conflict of the movie was borne out of Harper not being able to come out and Abby struggling with hiding who they are is something that couldn’t be walked back in a sequel.

This resonated with me in a way no other description about coming out has. I've never fully related to other coming out stories or comments about coming out in movies or elsewhere but I believe John's comment in this scene is something everyone can relate to no matter the circumstance of their coming out. I grew up in Sweden in a very liberal and accepting family but even still I've never felt more terrified than right before I came out to my parents and I still feel some of that terror every time I come out to someone new. Wether it's a family member, a friend or a total stranger. Even though sometimes I know with utmost certainty that I have no reason at all to feel that way I still do. So thank you for this. Representation really does matter.

And I had to remind her that it’s easy for me or her to say that when it’s not really something we have to deal with. We can’t say what we’d feel or what we’d do. I can only imagine how scary it would be to have to tell something like that to your parents

I remember watching this movie when it came out and feeling like harper. scared about what others would think (Still, kind of do) if they found out and if I would be accepted. I've watched countless other movies and stories of how it was when people came out. the same advice I would always get back was that 'it gets better'. I hated that cause how can someone say that without knowing what I was going through, they didn't know what my future was going to look like. Why give me false hope (I know now it does get better, time has shown me that). But watching this scene brought me comfort cause no matter what others are going through we all share that one common experience and that is that moment we chose to share who we are with others. once we do 'A chapter has ended and a new ones began' and we have to be ready for that. I've Always had and we forever more so will have people around that understand me, wheather I can see that or not.

I am totally happy with the ending, abby never looks at riley the way she looks at harper. And abby just met riley and they only known each other for like 4 days and some people want her to end up with riley at the end of the movie???
Yes, harper act badly sometimes but who doesn't? We are all toxic at some point of our relationship. The movie revolves more on harper not coming out and more on her family, we actually did not see how they started, how abby fell inlove with her, we really did not see how they are as couple when they are just the two of them. Would you not forgive someone you love who hurt you just because she is too afraid of showing her true self to her family? You should be first person to understand her, you should be the first person to trust her own process of when she's ready to come out.
We all do poor decisions in life, so people should stop commenting like they are so perfect in a relationship like they never hurt someone at some point. Give harper a chance to make it up with abby.
I'd be happy if riley will have someone also in the movie if there will be a sequel.
I have watched the movie for like 10x

He says this to two side. The person who is doing coming out and finally feels ready to say them out loud, and the person who hears them. When you tell the truth about yourself you know that everything will change, also you know that if the other person reacts in an inappropriate way your relationship will forever change. Something will always be an obstacle to getting along together. Therefore, it is important not to lie to each other and to have trust if the other person has it in us

I love this scene. I really just wish it was in a better written movie. I'll be honest, I am bias, I don't like Kristen Stewart but oddly its not her that makes me dislike this movie. It's the ending. It honestly would've been better if they didn't get back together. Regardless of this amazing scene and it's truth, I am a believer that actions speak louder. Harper hid Abbey the whole time and then denied the truth while looking at Abby and didn't even go after her. I understand the fear but to me it doesn't matter. If you truly love someone, you DON'T treat them like that. I feel it would've been better if Abby broke things off explaining her self worth and how no matter the fear you don't treat another human being the way Harper did. The movie could end with Abby moving on and meeting Harper again some time later seeing how much Harper has grown as a new true version of herself. Not a "Look I've changed! Take me back!" but a mutual respect for each other and if written well could leave the ending open to possibilities instead of "OF COURSE THEY GOT BACK TOGETHER BECAUSE TRUE LOVE". I just find it toxic and unrealistic for Abby to forgive Harper so quickly.
