Matt Biondi was my 1st model of freestyle : his low stroke rate, esp in 100m and 200m freestyle.
Then Alexander Popov refined it with even more effortless style.

Phelps was a great swimmer all around, but where he really excelled were longer distances. 400 im, 200 fly were his best races, followed by 200 im and 200 free, and he often struggled to win the 100 fly but was still the best overall. he was also one of the best 200 backstrokers in the world, but didn’t compete in it because he couldn’t beat piersol/lochte. he was good enough at the 100 free to race in the relay, but never individually, and he never competed in the 50 because it was too short of a race and he often was one of the slowest in the first 50m of all of his races.
