This lady played at Stihia - so distant place in the world that very few DJs would actually travel there. It was crazy trip, but she managed to get all the way from USA to Uzbekistan solving visa issues while on flight! And on that night, she stormed the desert calling for the gods of the dead sea, who were themselves thrilled to hear those bizarre and angelic sounds! Jamaica, you are our star!
Hi, can someone explain to me why she (and a lot of other DJs) are touching the spinning platter e.g around 10:45? Shouldn’t she be touching the edge of the vinyl instead? Touching the platter is interfering with the motor itself and is likely to break it in the long run, no? No trying to pick on her specifically just trying to understand what the correct thing to do is. Thanks
I do the same as well. Sometimes vinyls aren’t cut properly along the edge and you have more control by slowing down by nudging the platter rather than the edge of the record. I haven’t heard that this damages the motor but I could be mistaken.
The platter is heavier than the vinyl, so touching it lightly gives a much finer adjustment than touching the vinyl. Also the effect of touching the vinyl will heavily depend on how sticky the skin on your fingers is - so touching the motor is much more predictable. I dont think it has a negative effect on the longevity of the motors.
I think it has already been replied well, but I will give you why I do it. That was how I was taught. This lady DJ spins vinyl exactly how I do. The reason I go to the table platter is it is much easier to fine tune the track slower than touching the record to slow it down. The variable of the slip mat to the vinyl is too much to maintain a certain technique learned to control the track speed while beat matching. You could get one cut to slow nicely for you, but the next cut could slip much harder based on its composition. The platter is a consistent feel. The only variance in the platter is based on turntable make. One might say the same thing about speeding the record up on the label surface like she and I do. However, the chance of the vinyl slipping forward is much less than it would slipping backward. Please bear in mind that this is my experience though. Each DJ has their own way to slow and speed a track down.
The motors are pretty powerful in the tables, a little pull back isn't going to affect it. Ive always liked touching the platter or using the pitch adjustment more than toughing the vinyl. The vinyl is way lighter than the motor and you can hear it slow down or speed up more when touching it. Gotta remember most of these turntables have been operating for years with no motor problems.
the thing I love about this station/channel is that you can't judge a book by its cover. I've heard some storming sets from dj's I wouldn't usually think twice at looking at.
That depends on how you use it. If it enables you to do crazy fast mixes on 4 decks that would otherwise be almost impossible to pull off, then I'm all for sync.
OMG I'm dying laughing here. If this wasn't intentional I would be sad. She started her set with a track including the vocal "The System is Down." If this isn't a tie in to the parody of techno from homestar runner years ago, then this is accidental genius. ua-cam.com/video/JwZwkk7q25I/v-deo.html

Never heard of you before but well done for going back to basics! At least we can see the DJ is doing something with vinyl.
There are many DJs out there getting back to analog and mixing vinyls, specially "modern hipsters" in Berlin :)

maybe it's a bad habit that many dj's have just picked up from seeing it done by others? I had no idea this was bad as I am guilty of doing it myself.

I love it when I don't see a "sync," button!!
I thought we already dropped this silly thing.
