I have had my Quilt Expression 4.0 since November of 2011 and have not done much with it because I found it kind of difficult to understand...a really big change from my favorite machine the Pfaff 1471. This video was excellent and as a result of having watched it, I am going to try using some of the stitches, tools and techniques demonstrated. I found the video by accident. It would have been great to have known about it sooner. Dealers should tell new purchasers about its existence.
Your video/tutorial on the QE 4.2 was the determining factor in my choosing this machine over a few other top end ones. I've been using Pfaffs for over 30 years and as a quilter this is a perfect fit. I continue to go back to your video to learn new stuff. I can't thank you enough for creating such an informative tutorial. I shared your video with my favorite dealer so they too will be up on all this machine can do!
I inherited a 4.0, also my first Pfaff machine ever. Your video taught me a whole lot I had not figured out on my own yet, so thank you! Very well done!
So glad I found this, thank you! I've had my machine for a while (it's been in storage for 3 years) and I couldn't find the instruction manual. Have to say I've learned more from this video than I would ever have done from the instruction booklet. You have truly inspired me to get better acquainted and have some fun with it. Sadly it never had the automatic button holer, so I'm on the hunt for one of them now (UK)
I just purchased this machine and had to watch the video. The instructor is fabulous. I love the challenge of using a machine with so much capability. Thanks for your help.
THANK YOU!! We moved right after getting the machine, so it looked totally foreign by the time we got settled, and we were now two states away from the dealer. I wanted to learn about the buttonhole, but learned so much more, too. Again, thank you.
John you have helped me so much. I inherited a 4.0 when my beautiful mother-in-law died and I do not have the manual. Your tutorial has meant that I can now use this terrific machine and finish off the quilts that will become treasured memories of our dearly loved friend, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and wife. Thankyou so much from Sydney, Australia.
wonderful tutorial. I had about given up figuring out my 4.0. Now i"m inspired to use it again because of your clear explanations and all the time you took to do this. i think you made me love my machine!! It isn't has hard as thought !!Thank you thank you!!
Thank you John. I bought my QE 4.0 a few years ago. I had very much troubles with this machine. It goes better now, but the manual is terrible. But after I watched your video, I understand my machine better. I'm so happy. Thanks again from The Netherlands.
Thank you so much for this video! I bought a QE4.2 on Saturday, it's my first ever electronic sewing machine and this video was much easier to follow than just reading the manual (though I did read the manual!). I've only had a chance to use it to do a little piecing so far, but this has given me a much better idea of what it's capable of. Can't wait to try out some of the tips and get to some serious quilting! :)
I was debating between three different machines and your video showed and answered all the questions I had. I will definitely be getting my 2nd Pfaff. My old one is over 30 years old and worked like a charm until it finally decided it had enough, plus there is so much more technology now. Thank you very, very much for your time and knowledge.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been looking for a tutorial for my Pfaff Expression 3.2 but there aren't any. This one comes very close so I followed the tutorial with my machine and suddenly my machine wasn't so complicated and incomprehensible as before. Finally I can enjoy using it more now
Thanks John for your fantastic tutorial. I bought the 4.0 and was unsure how to use some of the functions like the mirror image. I have learnt so much by watching your video, one should be sent out with every machine. As they say "A picture paint a thousand words" Thank you so much from England
Thank you so much for this BRILLIANT video. Made the decision for a new machine so easy. I will watch it again and again as I learn to use beautiful machine.
Great video. Bought my QE 4.0 years ago and had many issues and problems, too long a list to report. Glad to hear PFAFF has been reworking many of the identified problems these past few years to correct them. I have to say the PFAFF manual is awful and a great disappointment for such a sophisticated machine. Unfortunately, the shop I purchased from did not lend much support. Maybe PFAFF can commission you and provide this type of instructional video with every machine! Terrific job. Thank you.
John, you are AWESOME. Why oh why are you not a Pfaff dealer in Southern California?? Thank you so very much for doing this video for those of us that are forced to buy our Pfaff machines from dealers that only care about getting the signed check for the purchase of the machine. Most do not even know what the words CUSTOMER SERVICE means. If you are a dealer I envy the people who choose to buy their machines from you. Diane
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this "very useful" video. My husband bought me a 4.2 for Christmas. Unfortunately, we live in Canada, so we couldn't buy it from you. You've explained everything exceptionally well and now I feel comfortable about getting started.
Wow. Amazing video thank you. Feel much better about my new machine. Manual didn't cover off the 'hold down the c button to clear'. Thanks for the tips. Beautiful stitches. Your enthusiasm for this machine shines through. Thank you. 💖
Just bought my QE 4.2 yesterday and love it. Your video is awesome and has helped a lot. Even though I'm reading the manual, this video is a big help. THANKS so much!
OMG, thank you, thank you! I bought my Pfaff expression 2.0. before 5 years and I had so much problems because the manual is not well-written. I had moments when I was cried, I even gave to translate the manual from english to croatian because I was sure that I am obviously to dumb. You can not imagine the fact that I can disassemble and assemble industiral sewing machine, but I could not capture how to work with this sewing machine.
A thousand thanks for this fabulous tutorial. I am about to purchase a gently used 4.2 and this tutorial was an excellent orientation to the joys of this machine!
John, this was the most useful youtube video that I have seen!!! Thank you soooo much. I have had my QE 4.0 for just over one year and I have found the manual to be almost useless. However, your video has suddenly brought it all to life for me! Thank you heaps and heaps and heaps, all the way from Australia.
The most disappointing aspect of my new Expression is the poor manual too. Coming from an AU$800 Singer which has a very informative manual, I was surprised that after paying more than 3 times that amount, Pfaff couldn't supply a more comprehensive manual.
I would like to thank you very much John for this video, I have just today bought one of these machines and was very intimidated about using it not to mention very confused. you have helped me no end with this video thank you so very much I shall now quilt with confidence thanks again lesley
John thank you so much for the tutorial. I have had my 4.0 for almost a year and was never able to attend a class. I learned so much. From a Georgia Peach.
Thank you so much John for such an informative tutorial. I have owned a Pfaff 4.0 for the past 3 years and didn't know what half the buttons were for or how to use them. The manual is a bit useless when it comes to quilting but you have certainly given me such encouragement to use it as my No. 1 machine.
Fantastic. I have a 4.0 but this video has taught me so much. I was looking for info on free motion because the manual is of no use at all and now know what to do. Thank you sooooo much
I have a 4.0 (basically the exact same machine except for a different color and the 4.0 doesn't have a start/stop button or LED bulbs. I replaced my bulbs with LEDs from Amazon) it is a later run, I'm guessing, because it is made in China, not Sweden. It recently needed a replacement thread cutter module--I guess that was one of the main problems with the 4.0, there was a bad batch of thread cutter modules--but it was done under warranty and they did a complimentary clean & service too! It's been the most amazing machine. When it comes time to upgrade I will either go to the Performance 5.2 or the new Quilt Expression 720, maybe we could get a video about that machine. :) Thank you for this very informative video!
Thank you!!!!!! I haven't been able to use my Pfaff QE 4.2 very much (tax time) but your video is fantastic!! I can't wait to jump in quilting again! I've also have to make some time to sell my Pfaff QE 4.0 .......
Omg ...so glad I came across this wonderful informative video...I just up graded my old Phaff 750 to a 4.5 last last year and love it but you have given me some exciting tips like the scant 1/4 inch seam in 💛and the free motion quilting 👏👏👏👏. Thank you 😘
Thanks so much!! What an excellent video with so much information! I just bought an Ambition 1.0 and your video has helped me learn about my new machine (obviously mine doesn't have as many features, but I now understand the ones it does have). Thanks again!!!
Thank you so much for your informative video. I looked at the Quilt Expression 4.2 this afternoon in a sewing shop and hope to make a decision tomorrow on whether or not to purchase it. Your video explained the machine in such great detail, I loved all of the sample stitches and your explanation of the buttons and settings. Looks like a wonderful machine, Thank you!
I don't know what I did that I have had to replace the automatic needle threader and after I did it messed it up again. What did I do? Who knows?! Thank you the great explanations that you have provided. I was frustrated was getting ready to give up on this machine. You caused me to give it another go. Thank you so much!
Great video! Even though I've had my machine for over a year I refer back to this video many times for different reasons. John, you did a good thing making this! The person at our local Pfaff place is not a good teacher and she does a poor job explaining things! Love your fmq too - I don't always seem to be able to keep the tension right on my projects but it's probably not the machines fault...I'm getting faster!
Great tutorial on the Quilt Expression it has been very informative thank you. I have learn t so much, I be able to get to use more features on the machine and extend my creativity on my sewing projects.
Thanks so much for your very informative tutorial! I have learnt all lot about my machine QE 4.0 that I no idea I could do.You have given me a lot more confidence to have play with different settings. Thanks so much
Wow! Just bought my QE 4.2 yesterday and was getting frustrated coming from a basic machine to this! you showed me ALOT of information. I am only having one problem so far, the cutter will not cut my bobbin thread and when i go to sew again it keeps telling me I have a jam. I will be contacting my local store, but thanks for all the other info you provided. I will be coming back to it again and again. deb
Thank you for excellent video! When receiving Pfaff warning on low bobbin and there is thread remaining on bobbin = Ignore screen display and press presser foot as normal and it will continue to sew. If one needs to use any button, it requires one to press Check Mark button. If display sends warning on low bobbin again; repeat procedure. Also passing along good tip from store that if upper thread breaks repeatedly the upper thread spool may be at the end of spool. The thread is wound tighter on spool at last part of spool. As I was doing free motion, I put on new spool and problem was gone.
This tutorial was great. I learned so much about my machine. Thank you. While cleaning the machine, I dropped the thread cutter into a little space under the needle plate, front right hand corner and can't remove it. Could you give me any instructions to take it apart to find the cutter please. It's not floating around in there so must be stuck. The machine still works perfectly.
Excellent video, I've been using my expression 4.0 for a couple of years but still learning. I would love some guidance on sewing with twin needles as I'm about to have a go at stained glass patchwork.
Thank you so much! I am a brand new sewer. Never even touched a sewing machine, ever, ever. Still haven't turned on my new Pfaff 4.2--working up the nerve. Your tutorial is boosting my courate--tomorrow could be the day! What other tutorials do you have or recommend for a newbie?
I have a 4.0 (guess I got lucky, it's perfect in every way, including free-motion), and your video is so helpful as the machines are quite advanced and the Pfaff manual is rather sparse. Thanks again. :)
Thanks for this helpful demo. Almost everything shown was new to me and I learned so much. such as the better foot to use in making a 1/4" seam and using stitch number 51 with width setting then saving to favorites. Just what I needed to know. I wish Pfaff had included a CD like this with the machine. I do have other questions such as what settings are best when using heavier thread. But I can figure that out with the info I learned here.
Thank you so much! I just bought Creative 2.0 and this seems almost identical except that the Creative has embroidery. Phaff needs to hire you to do their instruction books and videos. I now feel so much more confident to use the machine and really loved the helpful hints that you gave...especially free motion. I have seen a lot of blogs with discussions about free motion with Creative 2.0 and this machine.
Great showcase for the quilt expression. Thanks so much for your time. One of the LED lights on my machine is flickering, is this something that I could look at myself? Thanks again.
Terrific video, I learned a ton! Like some others here, I've also been having tension problems when trying to free motion quilt. So I'll keep looking for solutions to that, or contact my dealer.
AWESOME..Finally learning how to use my machine. During the training they rush the instructions, and I just felt overwhelmed. So, I never used my machine. Thanks for doing such an awesome job, and now I can use my machine comfortably. Keep up the good work. I also need to learn beginning quilting. Any suggestions...
John, I noticed that before you did the sensormatic free motion quilting, you didn't bring up the bobbin thread like we usually do manually. Is there no need to do it now (with the 4.2) including the hiding of the top and bottom threads in between the sandwich?. It is a great improvement of quilting if that is so! Very impressive tutorial.
Hi John, You provide the best tutorials out of the 100's that I have seen. I wish I could "Like" you every day. You deserve it. I just bought a used Pfaff Creative 2.0 is that the same as the Quilt Expression 4.2 mine is also an embroidery but I can't find the machine on a tutorial to tell me how my Creative 2.0 works. Any advice as to which tutorial I can watch for those specifics for that machine?
Thank your for an amazing tutorial. Much better than the instructions I received from the owner of the shop where I purchased it. I had a difficult time with the tension and had to return three times to have it fixed. I have one more problem (and I do not not want to return to her shop) with my sensormatic buttonhole 5A. When I attach the foot to my machine the stitch screen appears with the picture of the buttonhole, but the width indicator is not on the screen and I cannot change the length of the buttonhole. Any suggestions? Wish I lived near your store!
Whe the 5A is plugged in you use the left and right arrows on the scroll wheel to the far right of the screen to set the buttonhole length. Hope that helps
Thank you very much, I was given this machine ( the 4.0 ) a couple of weeks ago, and have been stumbling along on my own, but now I have watched your video from start to finish, and followed you as you went along, I've managed everything apart from the free motion, my top thread keeps breaking, any suggestions plz as I really want to use this machine to its full. Thanks carole
Great video John. I have a problem with the threat cutter. Some times it cut, other times it does not cut. What could be the problem? I had to change the tension unit 2 months ago, but the problem with the cutter still remain... Do you have any idea? Thanks.
Fantastic tutorial and soooo helpful. I have my 4.0 for years and have never known how many of the features worked. I have been trying free motion quilting but I am still getting thread breaking. What am I doing wrong. Many thanks in anticipation.
Make sure to use a size 90 needle, also running the machine faster helps. If you run the machine slow you might cause the needle to flex when it is in the fabric which will break your thread.
Im having stitch problems with my new Pfaff quilt expression. The top stitch looks good but the bottom looks like the threads haven't been pulled up through the fabric as I can see dots and the main stitch line looks tight. I've seen lots of information saying to increase the top tension. I've moved it from the set tension right up to 7.8 but it's still the same. I've tried making my stitches smaller too at 2 but no improvement. I can't think it's the bobbin tension as its a very new machine. I had this all singing all dancing machine and I was led to believe that it would be sooo easy to use as it's all automatic but I'm getting very frustrated by it. It sounds a bit clunky to me too. Do you have any ideas as to what I can try please?
I just bought this beautiful machine.I'm going to learn FMQ I watch your video that by the way is great and very detail.I have a question.I heard you said about the needle plate to change it for free motion. I need to obtain the plate for better results?.What is the part number for the plate?.This video is going to help so much to understand I'm a visual learner. Thank you.
could you also include - needle size/recommended embroidery thread to use/ bobbin thread. is that 2 layers of fabric or is there 3 layers including batting? do you have video showing needle art stitches (for 4.0)
Thank you for a great video. Helped me a lot with my brand new Expression 4.0. Do you know why the needle plate has that tiny notch near the needle hole (02.48 on the video). I noticed that this morning on my machine and thought the plate was damaged. Thank you.
Hi john just bought an expression 2.0 very similar to this one but with less features. Do you John or any one knows if there is a similar video for 2.0 pls as I just can't seem to find one
I have a pfaff QE4.2. I bought spring motion foot for it. Would the 6D foot work better? Just wondered why the default tension for free motion quilting is set at 5.2 when I always have to adjust to anywhere from 2.6 to 3.2. Does it have anything to do with being new to fmq, or is it the thread. Usually use 50 wt. bobbin for all FMQ. one more question? tension, does adjusting the number down loosen the top thread? not sure as I seem to have tension issues that are not consistent on any given day
I have the QE 4.0 and I’m trying to change the bulbs to LED. I’ve tried a couple of different brands that end up getting hot and burning out. I’m using a 5W / 12 Volt. What would be the exact bulb for this machine?
I have the 4.2 Pfaff which I love to sew with. But, recently, I used the start/stop button after adjusting to a faster speed, and what it did first was go into reverse and then moved forward. What should I do to correct the problem? I never touched the reverse button before adjusting the speed. Thank you
I'm looking for a video for free motion quilting on a Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.0. After reading the comments below, it looks like you might have made one. Where can I find it to watch?
I am having so many problems with free motion quilting on my QE 4.2... I did exactly what you did in the video and my threads are looping on the bottom as well as the bobbin thread isn't getting picked up all the time.. any suggestions?
Whenever i use my scissor option, if I don’t pull a generous length of thread to the back, I get a birds nest on the underside of my patchwork. I’ve watched and I don’t see on any videos where it’s necessary to do this. I have re-thread the upper thread, checked the bobbin and changed the needle. Can u give me any other idea as to y I encounter this issue?
Would you show how to clean thread from under the bobbin and put it back together. I must have done something with mine and now the stitches hang up on the little metal bar underneath.

wonderful tutorial. I had about given up figuring out my 4.0. Now i"m inspired to use it again because of your clear explanations and all the time you took to do this. i think you made me love my machine!! It isn't has hard as thought !!Thank you thank you!!
The Best sewing machine video I have seen. Just purchased the 4.2! Thank you for posting this great video. Gotta go sew!

Where can I get this information for operating the pfaff quilt expression
@@ethelgranger8152 I wish I knew!! I am writing it all down because I could not find it in print. I hope they don't erase this video.🤪

Awesome instructional video. Best I have ever seen. Thank you so much

Thank you so much, your tutorial is fantastic! It is my go to for any questions I may have about my machine.
The most beautiful video I've ever seen on a sewing machine! Too bad I live in Italy otherwise I would be sure to buy from you. Ciao
Great tutorial on the Quilt Expression it has been very informative thank you. I have learn t so much, I be able to get to use more features on the machine and extend my creativity on my sewing projects.
Excellent video. Helpful tips and shows me from beginner to advanced techniques to showcase my new Pfaff Quilt Expressions 4.2. Thank you so much.
I will be coming back to it again and again. deb
love my new Quilt Expression 4.2 !!! Merry Christmas from Santa
Great video! One thing you didn't mention is that we can wind the bobbin from the needle. I love my new pfaff!
Fabulous! Such a helpful video. I think I've made up my mind which machine I want to get!
Oh, and on the 4.0, the quilt straight stitch with tie-off is 51. :) Terrific function.
Fantastic tutorial Thank you!
Fantastic tutorial, John you are my forever PFAFF friend :-))
Thank you very much, I was given this machine ( the 4.0 ) a couple of weeks ago, and have been stumbling along on my own, but now I have watched your video from start to finish, and followed you as you went along, I've managed everything apart from the free motion, my top thread keeps breaking, any suggestions plz as I really want to use this machine to its full. Thanks carole
John, I think I am going to look for a home in Santa Rosa! lol
thank you so much for this amazing tutorial you have helped me greatly!!!!!
Great Video!
What a great video! Thank you.
This is so awesome thank you so much for the instructions
Thank you! Great presentation!!
great tutorial! is there a great difference with the older version of this product, the quilt expression 4.1 (that I own)? thanks!!!
Thank you.

could you also include - needle size/recommended embroidery thread to use/ bobbin thread. is that 2 layers of fabric or is there 3 layers including batting? do you have video showing needle art stitches (for 4.0)
Thank you very much for this video.
Thank you for a great video. Helped me a lot with my brand new Expression 4.0. Do you know why the needle plate has that tiny notch near the needle hole (02.48 on the video). I noticed that this morning on my machine and thought the plate was damaged. Thank you.
+Ronson Dalby The notch it to accommodate the attachment to lift the fabric for doing pin tucks
Hi john just bought an expression 2.0 very similar to this one but with less features. Do you John or any one knows if there is a similar video for 2.0 pls as I just can't seem to find one
Hi John , this machine comes with one needle only? Thank you for the video.
If you get thread looping underneath it is usually that the thread has come out of the upper take up leaver.
I was wondering if there is a stitch regulator for the quilt expression 4.2? this is a feature that I didn't know I wanted when i bought my machine.
Super erklärt, werde mir diese Maschine auch kaufen 🏠🌳🏠🌳👍
Thanks, I needed that!
Usually use 50 wt. bobbin for all FMQ.
one more question? tension, does adjusting the number down loosen the top thread? not sure as I seem to have tension issues that are not consistent on any given day
Great tutorial thank you very much!!!
Thank you
Brilliant! Thank you very much.
