I used to buy all the Airgun magazines...45 years ago.
I got very "wound up" as a young man reading all about shooting squirrels, rats, birds, rabbits, etc.
But now, as a 61 year old man, I regret it bitterly.
I loved the "hunt", and the silent tracking of quarry...
The technicalities, and craftsmanship of my guns (Weirauch HW35 Export)...
    The challenge of target-hitting...
But I deeply regret the taking of life.
    Just for..."sport".
As my mortality gets ever more vivid, and my own fragility becomes ever obvious to me, as the years go by, I think...
    "What RIGHT...did I HAVE ...
...to take the life of another sentient being?"
    Answer: None.
    I had NO right.
Please think about that before storming off into the dark Woods, gun in hand, as I once did, as a young and foolish man 😥😔

You make it seem that if you live in that house you can shoot the mentioned pests etc, however I must point out that if you live in rented property you must obtain the property owners permission first. The same applies if you whish to own either air rifles or shotguns or section 1 firearms on the property without shooting any of them on the property.

      @@markdixon4775Thats not quite correct.
See Section 161 of the Highways act, which only applies to roads not footpaths. It's only an offence to shoot within 15 metres of the centre of a highway IF, AS A CONSEQUENCE, someone is “Injured, endangered or interrupted”. (“Interrupted” means being forced to stop or make a detour).
If none of those 3 things occur you can legally shoot close to, (but obviously not on - that is an offence) the highway. In the case of footpaths, as long as you own or have permission to shoot on the land there is no restriction on shooting near or over footpaths.

Yes, if they are attacking you with a dangerous weapon like a knife or a club, or threatening you with a gun or a crossbow. If they only try to punch you then you can hit them with the butt of your gun. In no case can you shoot them once they have backed off or are running away; your response has to be proportionate to the threat. And don't try lying to the cops, saying that you thought Charlie's stick of celery was a knife or some such thing: once you give up the moral high ground you're as likely to end up in front of a magistrate as your attacker.

Culling invasive species to protect natives is only one of the many reasons shooters give to justify what they do when challenged. They seem to suffer collective amnesia when it is pointed out that there are between 50 and 60 million pheasants released each year purely for shooting and there is some science that suggests by October 1st pheasants by mass, are an estimated 1.6 times the total of the remaining Uk bird population. Pheasants are native to Asia.
