  • The Skull Woods dungeon is a surprising shake up compared to the usual dungeon formula found in ALTTP, and has always been a personal favourite of mine. But is that nostalgia, or does the dungeon actually have deeper flaws that hold it back? Let's have a look!

such an interesting layout shakeup for a dungeon. For me, I think the Lost Woods in this game is the most iconic, and what in my mind is the default treatment of the Lost Woods...very much a precursor to the "hidden" Forest Temple of Ocarina of Time. I would love to see a 3D version of this gambit in some future iteration of the Lost Woods, with the dungeon itself a subterranean maze, accessible from the surface. Some of this music needs bringing back too. Chilling/gorgeous

This is such a cool dungeon! I love how you have to go in and out, it feels like an underused dungeon design. The fire rod is a cool item! I'd honestly love to see it again, but I guess fire arrows so about the same thing.

MOTHULAAAAA! Lol love the name 😂 this boss environment is too chaotic imho 😝 I wouldn't get rid of all of it, but just dial it back a bit. I again agree with all of your points about what could be improved here, and why it's still a very enjoyable dungeon to play through. Another great video!!! Excited to see the next 😁👍🏼

Interesting that you say that, as the Fire Rod come back in BOTW...But it just didn't seem of much use there, and wasn't really used for puzzles...

@@mrnegative4482 yeah, I think it would be cool to have it come back as a main item instead of just a weapon existing in the world! It's also different from 2D to 3D I think

I agree with you completely. It’s an amazing idea in concept, but not executed perfectly. I love the idea of it being blended with the overworld. Most dungeons feel like one giant task where you enter and never leave until it’s complete. I hope TotK takes this idea where larger dungeons can be segmented for different reasons. I also think the boss is a bit too chaotic, it’s unreasonably difficult to defeat with skill and you just sort of have to survive until it’s dead. Another banger, Burger!

Based on the LTTP dungeons I’ve seen in your videos, this is the most visually interesting dungeon so far! I like all the spooky little sprites.

The point of the useless key doors is to get you to burn keys and not have one for part 3. If you know what you are doing you can take an extra key or 2 to the 3rd part and speed through it. Especially if you just have one to bypass that lower level maze in the first room.

Blooming heck! What a shakeup! Breaking the dungeon into sections AND that boss fight seems so epic!
Shame it had so many small issues. Looks like you really enjoyed the fire rod!

You should do In-Depth Pre Dungeon Activities in Zelda Games Videos. That way you can give Detailed Information about all the Pre Dungeon Quests, Items, Locations, etc that players couldn't find or access.
A Link to the Past is the Best Way to start as it has a lot of Backtracking for all these Pre Dungeon Activities.

Love this series Capt, and the high quality and professionalism of all your uploads. Even though I know the dungeons you feature so well inside and out, I still enjoy hearing you talk about them. Glad to see you gained quite a bit of followers recently, it’s honestly surprising you don’t have 10x or 20x the followers you have but I have no doubt you’ll reach those heights and beyond in due time.

    A banger of a dungeon!
I also never realized that the second half of almost every dungeon in ALTTP gets so linear, that's an interesting observation.
Out of curiosity, why were the bees omitted from this video? I always use bees during the Mothula fight to help deal damage. 🐝🐝🐝

Skull Woods is such a dungeon for my memories. I was always terrified of the Floormaster, the idea of a hand just grabbing me freaked me out. I accidently figured out the most optimal route to skip almost all of Skull Woods and blitz the boss. It's only now that I'm much older that I realize that the overworld was part of the dungeon. Well played nintendo. Also, Bombos blows away Gibdoes.

First time I fought this boss (on GBA), I brought a golden bee with me. I trew it to it's face and the fight was over in less than a minute. I would never be able to see this boss as a hard one. Even if fighting the intended way is brutal indeed.

@OmegaFox09 that would be correct, however in the normal game you can't get the gold sword before mothula as you need the red crystals to open the way to it while skull woods is a red crystal dungeon

Ah, I know what they’re referring to.
In randomizers, a few dungeons are shown as red crystals rather than the usual blue on the map and inventory screens. This is to differentiate which dungeons are mandatory to get the certain items.
However there are no red crystals in the vanilla/retail version of the game

skull woods i wish was refined more. in albw it overcorrected the design by making the dungeon very linear outside of the vertical drop puzzle and a little bit of early (dead end) branching. it is unfortunate we never saw a return of this sort of dungeon. the other problem is the door logic on the east end can lead to a potential soft lock where save/quit is the only solution.

    • @scorpionsapprentice3248
      @scorpionsapprentice3248 Рік тому

albw's version fell into the oot mq trap but for the opposite reason. the spirit temple traded consistency for navigability while skull woods traded navigability for consistency.

Every time I watch one of these, I think, wow, that was one of the best dungeons in that game. They can't all be, of course, but that just goes to show how great the dungeon design in A Link to the Past was. I am really hoping that the underground/cave areas in Tears of the Kingdom will be influenced by this dungeon, having multiple cave entrances from the overworld that are connected, so you need to coordinate between them in order to reach whatever is in there. And speaking of Tears, with so much content being based on the hands-on previews these days, which I am trying to mostly avoid, I really appreciated this video having nothing to do with that.

the snes version had an oversight where the tempered sword's normal swing works against the boss of skull woods while the golden sword's weak poke only works against it. this was fixed in the gba version.

Skull Woods is still my least favorite dungeon. Honestly it's the only one I have trouble with even today. Not in the boss fight (Yeah it's hard, but I know how to deal with it) but just the dungeon itself.
