There was a fad in the mid sixties to wear BIG polar bear coats. Loved them. I’m a little ole lady but still a fashionista. I’m happy to see you teaching young people about fabulous cloths from the past. I have saved clothes my entire life. Just yesterday I wore a darling cropped wool vest I knit in high school in the mid sixties. Always get compliments from young people when I wear stuff from my clothing archive.
I don't know if those were actual polar bear coats but the movie Dr Zhivago started a big fad for Russian looking attire, and long coats with fur or fake fur trim and fur hats were a big part of it. My Polish mother was very anti-Soviet but when my dad was stationed in Germany she happily wore that look. She looked a bit like Tonia front Dr Z in her fur hat.
I adore the 60s and 70s fashion, every article of clothing I own are from those decades. I wish I had more access to 60s clothing. But i do own a vintage raccoon trench coat
I've got my mother's sheared raccoon coat. Knee length. The hide has dried and hardened. I have always wondered if it could be reconditioned so it could be worn again. I think a relative gave it to her as a hand me down so she could wear it at college. She was born in 1919 in Michigan.
I don't know really, but you can look for leather and hide artisans, check if they can do restorations (this is key, since not everyone do it) and ask them
@@goldenruby I second this. Find a good leather/fur tailor shop and see what they can do for this. It's a bit of history, vintage and should be saved if at all possible.

But mostly he says take it to a pro to be rescued and make sure you follow their storage instructions.
Yes. I have something very similar from Costco (doesn’t zip) and it is the warmest coat ever. Fits over my current baby bump. Last year I’d just pick up my youngest and wrap her to my chest in it. I had to hold the coat shut, but it took some of the strain of carrying her off my arms
Yepp, got a biggg ass dark green coat (think Anastasia in the beginning of the animated movie) at a thrift store for 5 bucks and it's the best when I don't have a matching jacket for my outfit cause it covers everything haha, it's been known as the kgb coat in my friend lol
OH! YES!! 😃 My mother had one of those shearling car coats in black. I always adored it, but out grew it b4 I was old enuf to wear it. And my sisters live in Florida, so... 😢
I can testify with the hoodie huggle versions, they're so warm that they literally help me get through the cold seasons. I can't live without them. Btw, those raccoon coats remind me of the coats the Pevensie children used in Narnia.
You and bloglates relate! I love big coats but living outdoors in the cold I can’t do anything sawdust and wood splinters stick to (chopping and gathering wood for log burner).
Hello from a fellow basement dweller in Alberta! I find polyester (plastic, aka the sherpa material) just doesn't compare to animal products. I'd opt for a thrifted/vintage real fur coat or a 100% wool one. Wool doesn't harm the sheep. There is ethical wool. Plus the plastic traps odours that idk why, never quite seem to wash entirely out. Sure they smell clean and good right out of the laundry but wear it for an hour and it stanks again. Yes, even if you are right out of the shower into clean clothing. It is a very cute look regardless! Stay warm everybody. ❤
I was under the same impression as you are regarding wool but wool is in fact very very often very unethical. You can Google a docu on it but of course animal exploitation propaganda is everywhere too and will want to convince you otherwise. But there are shaving techniques that are rly shit for sheep and of course also keeping conditions in some places that are not good , so you can't just say that wool is ethical, only a small minority comes close to that
I have one and someone once told me it looked like little girls clothes so I never wore it out and this just gave me the confidence/inspiration that it doesn’t look like kids clothes at all😂❤️ thank you
The "can wear anything under it" is SO REAL though! I have a second (twentieth?) hand wool coat that's very long and loose cut. It fits my favourite puff-sleeve sweaters EASILY, allows for the full range of movement (to hold onto bars on public transit) AND it feels like a giant, warm tent. 11/10, 2022/23 was the coziest winter ever. It has yet to get cold enough to bust it out this season, but I can't wait!
The material probably isnt more ethical but I live by tent clothes in winter. It cost an arm and a peg because they valued the life of the animals more than the value of the often plastic/synthetic sherpa material. Unless the material is real sheeps wool
Me and my mom have something like this called “the comfy”. We love them so much that we bought 3 extra, and we literally LIVE in them in the winter! I wish they had zippers in the front though like the ones in this video!

I've tried on LOTS of different fur coats and some of them were so HEAVY! Wolf and coyote I remember being like a ton. I can't imagine the weight of those raccoon coats 😅 Sable full length coat was as light as a feather but cost more than the house I was buying at the time! 😂
Also in Minnesota. Very much agree lol I have a pink fur sweater in a sinilar cut and it goes with everything (I mostly own pastels) amd its soooo comfy

my biggest tip to begin dressing vintage (or fancy in general) in a colder climate is invest in a good period looking coat, if they are long (most vintage coats can be long) you can literaly wear anything underneath you'll look vintage and on the contrary you can have the best outfit underneath if it's put under a modern looking coat, it just won't look right

Plus raccoons are considered a pest animal by many. They aren't (as far as I know) raised on fur farms. If a farmer shoots one to protect his poultry, grain, or dogs, he or she may as well make use of as much of it as he can. Raccoons are usually very nasty to dogs.
