"...and that needs to stop teasing me." 😂 I love it when you have some fun like that. Also love that you show what's not done well in addition to your successes. It's encouraging to us more basic gardeners when things go wrong in our own plots!
Everytime i watch i think how beautiful your garden is, it is such a pleasure to look at even via video, the surrounding green of the fields sets it off so well. Must be a lovely place to work Hugh even in the cold of winter
Please could you do a comparison of all the undercover growing options you have, which is your favourite and which is the most useful/practical in a garden? Thanks for the great content x
Thank you. Such practical and useful advice. I have dear friends in Dinas Cross who I’m lucky enough to visit yearly. Such magnificent landscapes! Bought a few of your books and use them frequently.
I have a very small garden here in the USA. This year feels special. I can feel and see such potential in my small space. So much growing, and ya know, I forgot to start kale. Well, I'm not done for sure..lol
After doing no dig for 30 years, about 5 years ago started digging over one or two beds each year, the carrots had become, short and stumpy, dug one out the other day fed 9 for one meal and 2 for the rest of the week. Onions had a problem with wind, mulch and when they were being planted. This year planting in NZ's autumn will see how that goes.
Whoa, what?! At 5:55 you say this is your last full season in this garden. Moving? Spending more energy at the other garden? This garden is more the size and varieties of the home garden, and I love this scale.
Same. So many garden youtubers are up-sizing from a more relatable size garden into a huge space (like epic gardening too) and then I feel like they lose touch with what the average gardener is dealing with. I really hope Huw won't be doing the same 😔
Yes, all will be explained but you'll be pleased to know the main filming garden is actually about 1/4 the size of the current garden (all built just private) so I am downscaling in a sense, with other types of growing intermingled. I also live over 30min from this garden which is another barrier.
I have a polycrub. It's VERY hot, even with the back windows left open. We need to rebuild the door and incorporate a louvre vent so the air will move.
Hi Huw, Thank´s for sharing your experiences. It´s really beautiful with sackcloth as a lining in a wooden structure, in a basket as well as in a hotbed! - Let´s see for how long it holds before it´s broken down to compost...
Great update Huw, It's nice to have some dry weather as West Wales has been extracwet and windy this winter. The hot bed looks amazing and easily a month a head of a normal raise bed.I want to add more perennials and red currents and black currents are on my radar.
I'm going to be starting some beds as no-dig. mainly because I need some extra beds that will produce right away. After a couple years, when the grass is killed off, I plan to loosen the subsoil.
You say turnips aren't your favorite vegetable, but have you tried the red varieties? I and my husband personally think they're more flavorful, and are well worth growing over the white or purple types. I can recommend the variety Scarlet Ohno Revivial in particular. I've tried Hida Beni in the past but didn't have a good crop that year, and I'm trying Asuka Akane this spring to see what they're like. Also, have you ever tried Wall O' Waters for your tomatoes? They let you plant out frost tender crops a bit earlier than you otherwise would.
Everything looks so green and lush. Can’t wait to see it later on. Still waiting on your books to show up from your funding campaign you did. Hope they show up soon
I don’t plant greens. They get so many bugs on them. I netted my cabbages and the white butterflies folded their wings to get through the net and I had loads of white fly. I composted them all!
Looking forward to seeing how your garden changes over the next few months. I too have one solitary PSB plant which is teasing me with what could have been 😂. Take care 😊
I do the opposite with my garden. I put the things I need to access most, farthest away. This forces me to walk through the whole thing most every day, so I notice more that needs to be done or kept on top of. Out of sight, out of mind, right?
Hey Huw! Love your channel! Like a lot of Australians, my partner and I are planning a party with friends to celebrate the crowning of a new British King on May 6th. Not sure where your loyalties lie but I thought it may be a good theme at least for a few videos to mark the occasion. Cheers!
How are British kings related to gardening? Besides, there's nothing really to celebrate, same ol' thing ni matter who's "in charge' (not that the people in the spotlight are really the ones in charge). So...
@@tarastreasure Henry VIII designed the gardens at Hampton Court Palace, and the new King has been a keen gardener for most of his life. The gardens at High Grove are quite something.
@@saltburner2 oh, yes, I forgot about landscaping and co. Only thought of vegetables. 😅 Well, yes, those times were possibly more interesting than the ones we live today. Some history videos might be nice.
Just bought another book you written, and picked up my self a new raised bed. Really looking forward starting one this year ❤. Thank you for your vids and books ❤
@@HuwRichards no thank you for all your wisdom x are you going to write another book. Even though you have just written one. Maybe a cook book with all the garden veg 🪴
Another great video Huw. I have an allotment which through no dig and module sown techniques has transformed my growing. I get up twice a week due to family commitments so watering can be an issue In summer sometimes so I've been trying to figure out a way. I have 16 2.4m X 0.75m beds I don't have power so can't pump a drip system, too many plants for a gravity drip system. I thought about homemade ollas but not sure how well they work in the uk. Have you ever used them? and do they work? or any other thoughts?
How old is your grape vine please? I've just bought 2 kiwi vines to put in the polytunnel (in France) and just wondering how to train them in our polytunnel. Thanks
Are you going to save seeds from the purple sprouting broccoli in hopes that it will carry genetics for the cold climate that the other plants didn't survive?
I think that's most likely crows if you find they've been pulled up and left on top of the soil, this is what happens to us. I doubt any birds will eat them. If you put some short garden canes around the area and then put netting over them it will stop them doing it as they don't like nets. We had the same with garlic here, the crows watch us in the garden and when we planted the cloves and went in side they were straight onto the beds and pulled some up to see what they were.
Can’t believe that out of over 8,000 views only 703 viewers liked this video 🤷♀️🤔 Huw always gives us such good advice 👏👏🇬🇧
I always forget to like videos even when i really enjoy them, I don't think it necessarily means it wasn't enjoyed by everyone :)
@@imogenspoor1701 Was going to say the same but I did go back and give it a thumbs up because I know it helps the algorithm.

It was such a revelation to find that the flower shoots of any brassica are delicious! Cabbage, kale, broccoli, mustard, I love them all.
Huw sometime could you do a video on caring for garden tools? How to sharpen them , clean them prep them for summer, etc?
It’s such a beautiful garden even when there’s not too much growing. Looks so peaceful! So excited to see the grape vine come to life!
It's such a well laid out garden and that weather is certainly nice! I woke to fresh snow over here by Yellowstone. 😄
Wow, I watch for sheer beauty of your garden. And your own delight in the process. Lovely!
Thank you so much Carol
Yeah that herb's getting a bit caraway with itself.
😂 great comment!

Jealous! We still have so much rain right now that it’s hard to get anything in the ground right now. Oregon is just wet. Thanks for a great vid😊

That purple broccoli could be good to seed save from, it may be more cold hearty than usual.

I'm still waiting for the cookbook, too.

I also lost all but one of my purple sprouting broccoli because of the winter weather!
Wow! It is hard to imagine plants liking soil temperatures as warm as 32 degrees C. That is 90F! It seems it would be bordering on too hot.

I wonder if that seedling is blackcurrant or redcurrant? Difficult to tell at that age…and rather close to the redcurrant!😀
You can tell by the smell when you rub the leaves. A black currant has the distinctive smell while red and white currants don't!
