Got to party with Phil one night in the early 80’s. I was starstruck because I was a Jeff Beck fan and loved Phil’s playing on Blow by Blow. Really sorry for your loss Norm. He was one of the greats.
Ouch, this one really hurts. Phil was always a gentleman. Always on time to the studio (early!), never an unkind word, a great team player. Sometimes getting older really sucks.
Dam, sad legends gone. You know Norman, your place is a Bench Mark of quality merchandise, and also a very important HISTORY lesson of the greats, present and past, and showing many who are to be greats of the future. We know a little about your charity work , and a man of great heart, integrity, and your love of the Art. TY Norman, my hat is off to you and your love of people, documenting and sharing experiences that will last for many generations from TEXAS Bear
RIP Phil Chen, and what a cool tribute story...Norm,, you are a living legend...thank-you for bringing so much to the music scene and being so humble...
I'm richer for you talking about your friends. Idols to me; friends to you. RIP Phil. So many of those bottom end thuds, thumps, bumps, slaps and absolutely spot on rhythmic lines are alive in his music and in my soul.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tributes with many memories of my dad. I remember coming to your shop and buying a guitar from you with my dad! He is missed greatly. 💕
Sad news, a friendship that lasted for so many years is truly special. Norm recalling having dinner with Phil and Jaco is indicative of how much he is a part of the history of music in L.A.
Phil played everything with that "Mutiny" sense and touch. He is with me every day as a Guardian Angel now. He called me right before he passed and I just rambled on about feeling like I was out to pasture as a session player. He didn't tell me he was dying.
So sorry to hear about Phil's passing, Norm. 😕 You truly are one of a kind, with a heart of gold. I'd just as soon have you stick around for many, many more years. ❤
Such a loss, losing one of my friends. Honored he asked me to be his date for his induction into the Rock Godz Hall of Fame. I'll miss our visits and his musical encouragement. RIP One Love
This is a great tribute to a really good bass player. He isn't really gone Norm. He will always be with you. That is how it is with those who touch us. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
So sorry for your loss Norm. I learned a ton from Phil growing up (and yes, I still play his solo from Hot Legs and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy)!! He did an excellent, accurate version of I’ll Be There on a James Jamerson tribute album. A very special musician!!
Phil didn't look much bigger than that bass he was holding, but, man, could he play. He had massive talent. And who didn't love Jaco?! Jaco's story breaks my heart and always will. He was one-of-a-kind. R.I.P. Phil Chen and R.I.P. Jaco Pastorius. I think in this case R.I.P. has to mean rip on the bass in paradise. Please don't plan on leaving us too soon, Norm. Some of us enjoy having you with us. Oh my gosh, I forgot that Michael Nesmith has left us. R.I.P. Michael Nesmith. This is all sad news, but we can keep their memory alive as long as we're here. I know I will.
I'm sorry for loss and greatly appreciate you sharing your memories. When you mentioned he played with Jeff Beck, I checked to see if he was the bassist on "Blow by Blow," one of my favorite albums of all time, and he was.
Very interesting stories.....My condolences to you and his Family ...... As a Louisiana Native born before you (lol) R&B was 'our music' ....TILL the Beatles hit us ! I still love it!
I can relate Norm.. have lost several bandbmates and musician friends over the years.. this old picker just celebrated his 74th birthday Dec 10th so I think we're pretty close to the same age Norm.. RIP Phil...😔
I know he's up in Heaven with Jaco now. It is so sad when we loose one of the great one's. He has been a mentor for many of us Bass players. May Phil rest in peace. Signed John Gregory / Zepbass from Munster Indiana.
Dear Norm, Thankyou You show this weird world what love is For your beautiful guitars (wish I could have one) For music For your friends And for this life ❤️
For Phil and Norm Music saving the World Peace My Heart Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet. Let it not be a death but completeness. Let love melt into memory and pain into songs. Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest. Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night. Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence. I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light your way. Rabindranath Tagore ☮️kevin
Sad news. Jeff Beck Group, summer '72, one of the best of my life. GF then and i loved Ice Cream Cakes and Highways. I know, forget the past,,,, Tough $#!+ ! It meant something. RIP, Phil.
God must have required another bass player for his supergroup, he will live on in his recordings and in the memory of all music appreciators RIP wee man with a big soul
Knowing perfectly well how unlikely it is that norm will read this comment, I feel compelled to leave it nonetheless. I've lost many a friend that meant as much to me as Mr. Chen meant to you. I understand how it feels. Eventually, what we all need is to think about what we can do to honor them.

Condolences to You Norm!
My deepest condolences for your loss, Norm. R.I.P. Phil Chen and Monkees Guitarist Michael Nesmith, two men of extraordinary talent and character.
And Mike Nesmith, IIRC, one of the pioneers of country rock ...

What a great story!
I remember seeing pictures of him on stage with Rod Stewart when I was a kid “who’s that?” What a bassline!

A nice tribute to Mr. Chen. He may have been small in stature but he was a giant in the music world.
Jamaican NATIONAL TREASURE!!! R.I.P. MAESTRO PHIL CHEN
Phil played everything with that "Mutiny" sense and touch. He is with me every day as a Guardian Angel now. He called me right before he passed and I just rambled on about feeling like I was out to pasture as a session player. He didn't tell me he was dying.
And Phil Chen was also the bass player in the album "Star Fleet Project" with Brian May and Eddie Van Halen. RIP
So sorry to hear about Phil's passing, Norm. 😕 You truly are one of a kind, with a heart of gold. I'd just as soon have you stick around for many, many more years. ❤
