The problem with both Fultz and Smith is they're combo guards with awkwards skill sets. Neither one of them are good 3 point shooters, nor are they wing defenders (Smith is a decent perimeter defender, but doesn't have the size to be an effective wing defender). They need the ball in their hand to be effective, but they aren't the best options for that on their team usually. Plus, there are an abundance of PG's on contending and playoff teams. Developing teams don't usually take players like them and if they do, they usually won't play much. The Bucks, Clippers, Nuggets or maybe the Mavs might be good spots for them. Suns already have Monte Morris as well. If Suns didn't sign Tyus Jones, I would say he could have joined the Suns and be the starting PG for them. In some ways, he might actually be better fit for the Suns than Jones.

I mean free agency is typically boring. You mean like it felt long ? Prob cause it all gone done so fast after draft. Stuff did happen. Klay and PG were pretty surprising. Demar, Hartenstein, kcp… people moved around
@anthonytrevino3191 No. The FA period used to have a lot of fireworks and in general just activity but the CBA and the current adjustments and changes to the cap has limited the fluidity of moves teams are making.
Veterans are likely the first to suffer when their market shrinks and demand for their services declines, as too many teams are tanking for a chance to draft Cooper Flag rather than competing for a championship or at least a playoff spot. The best that these veterans can do is go overseas and play a significant role in Europe, rather than being buried on the end of the bench for an NBA team for a veteran's minimum pay.
There wasn’t a market. There value is based on who’s willing to pay who can afford it. Bad teams don’t want to win because of the draft and good teams can’t pay him because 2nd apron
The cba rules got teams thinking twice before picking up solid backups not very long ago these teir of players didnt always struggle finding a new home
Unless they expand the league, I think you will see more and more FAs unsigned that should be on a roster. Not enough money to go around with the new tax aprons and everyone wanting supermax contracts
4-8 year vets have no market due to the new CBA. Rookies are cheaper and necessary to stay below the aprons. The new CBA guarantees a high percentage of money to 2-3 guys per team but leaves little meat on the bone for mid level experienced guys. No wonder it's an ISO game. Team skills are not encouraged.
@@justinalley3399 scoring, yes. But I see Fultz in a Smart role. Defensive pass-first PG, giving variance to their offense cause most of their guards are off-ball
Fairly surprised Covington is still available. Would Okoro still be available if he wasn't a restricted free agent? Pretty clear most teams don't want guards who can't shoot. I really don't think Russ will work out in Denver, especially come playoff time.
... or maybe it's time to reconsider how highly you value unrealized athletical potential vs actual basketball skill? four of the five players could be described as "young, uber-athletic, under-achievers, with shaky shooting and major holes in their offensive game, known for their defense because (a) they're athletic and (b) they sure ain't in the league for their offense"... then you have RoCo, who was a splendid role player a couple seasons and a couple injuries ago...
Most NBA players have to find a role that fits them in the NBA to make it. Not every team needs someone who can score 25 a night. There’s value in a solid 3&D player. However all of these guys are a little lacking in their 3 point shooting and that’s why they’re still available. You’re right about that. Okoro is clearly the best of the bunch tho.. he’s won’t be 24 until 2025 and he’s coming off the best 3 point shooting season of his career. As the guy mentioned the only reason he’s not sign is because as a RFA he has an 11.8 million dollar Qualifying Offer that he can take and the Cavs don’t want to pay him that much per year. There may have been other teams that would pay him that much or more, but they know the cavs could match so they used money elsewhere
Brooklyn obviously wants to tank, so why sign defensive players who could help them win close games? I’m sure the Nets ownership will receive some cash from the NBA slush fund for deliberately losing, and maybe even a top lottery pick.
It’s because of the cap. Teams either have max or minimum contract players. No one wants 7 mill a year players. So these guys are waiting cuz of low offers
