I remember reading an article back in 94 or 95 in Motor Trend or Car and Driver or something where the compared the 3000gt, the FD rx7, 300zx and the Supra. Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Mazda sent engineering teams along with the car to make sure their cars were running at their best. Toyota sent the car on the back of a flat bed with a few pairs of spare rear wheel/tires. That is confidence in your product.

The cars a a Lot more reliable than RCR makes it seem. My dad has a 94 vr-4 and the only thing that went wrong is the crank sensor. Also the coolant was leaking but that was cause it’s old Edit: the coolant leak was just the overflow tank
Just the other day I just bought a 92' RT/TT Stealth, Not stock but I absolutely love the car. One thing to mention the biggest things to maintain on these cars (3000GT or Stealth) Is the timing belt. If you do not take care of it and replace it when needed, The car will self destruct. So if you're gonna get one, focus on the matience bits and they'll treat you right.
I couldn’t disagree with this video more! I’ve had a 91 Stealth RT TT that I drive every summer and love for the last 6 years. For a 90’s car it’s incredibly fast and I haven’t to spend more than a $1,000 on the vehicle in the last 6 years. I’m a lucky guy and get to drive a lot of very fun vehicles but my Stealth is my favorite because no one knows what it is, it handles better than most cars of today, it looks great inside and out, and it takes me back to a simpler time.
@@NIVEKFFORHS I've owned 3 3000gt's/Stealths, are they as dead reliable as toyotas/hondas? No. But, their unreliability is often exaggerated because of poor maintenance. The engine block/heads are really strong. Like 450+ hp safely on stock internals. The timing belt/water pump should be done every 60k miles or 10 years, which people dont do then the belt breaks and they blame the car. The ECU capacitors always go out which makes the car runs like shit or not at all, but is like a 1 hour $20 fix for anyone that can solder. 2nd gear synchro's wear out every like 100k miles depending on how hard the cars driven but new synchros are a couple hundred bucks and changing them yourself is possible if you are patient. People perceive them as unreliable because they are 30 year old cars that rarely get the maintenance they need.
Loved these cars back in the day. Super quick - because back in the 90's these weren't rare and fragile. Nearly bought a VR4 model, but didn't like the rear visibility and overall low cargo space. If I had bought it, pretty sure I would have gotten to experience the inside of a jail cell, because being 20-something means you feel responsible, but only in comparison to your 17 year old self.
The oldest car I've owned had an aux port. It was a '94 jetta and didn't last long, but it had an AUX jack. I think they were supposed to be for plugging in a portable CD player like a Walkman.
My 2007 Fiat Punto has an unlabeled header on the back of the head unit that is apparently an Aux in, but it sounds like dirt... So I put a new head unit in. I lost my steering wheel controls, gained podcasts and music other than that provided by the ABC.
You didn't mention the insane technology for the time when you were listing tech. Rear-wheel steering, two-mode exhaust, active aero (for the Mitsu), and two-mode suspension. For all that, the pricing definitely made sense.

@@wackyduck3 yes but it was only at higher speeds and the back wheels would turn the same way as the front, like if you were passing someone. Also, I'm dead certain the 92 year RT was the last year for active aero.
I own a 1991 3000gt vr4 and i have to say all of the things he said are wrong. From the engine power to the engine's fragility to the having to pull the engine out. I'm sorry but these cars are fast as hell. I'm faster than a 2015 Audi S4 and with little mods can keep up with a stock corvette and still corner like no ones business. I rev the crap out of my car and have yet to have a problem. This car was way over priced and is complicated. But you dont have to pull the engine for any reason and can hold 500all wheel hp on stock internals.
I've been driving and racing these cars for years - Both stock, or heavily modified, I would hardly even come close to calling them fragile - I've never broken any drivetrain parts, or blown any engines on or off the track, let alone had any drive-ability concerns in terms of Reliability..... out of probably 6 of these cars... I think the owner dealt you a bad hand by asking you not to rev it out/drive it spiritedly...(feel free to check out some of the videos of them on m channel. Also it is not a DSM - Please do better research in the future.
This owner has had the car for 17 years, he's likely become a "hypocardriac" from all the bad stories on the forums over this time. I bought my R/T TT around the same time he did and while I found the stories disturbing, it was the unobtainable and unserviceable parts that ultimately made me throw in the towel and sell it, after having lusted for it for 10 years. That and the lack of headroom became really annoying over a short period of time. But yeah, you gotta open up that throttle every so often to keep things working properly. It's not going to make your bottom end bearings or synchros die that much faster... and if you have to be so careful, you never really owned the car, it owned you.
Only fragile part that was mentioned is the 2nd gear synchro’s... otherwise I’ve drive the car fast... and mr r did open it up too. Weird.... and in the 17 years I’ve owned the car it’s been more reliable then anything else...
So now you've moved on from "cars I have had sex in" to "cars my friends wanted that I explained were not as good as they looked" - excellent trend my friend
In the 1991 TV movie " Knight Rider 2000" They built the red K.I.T.T. out of a 1991 Dodge Stealth. This was because Pontiac would not let Universal Studios use the Pontiac Banshee concept car for filming. In the 1994 TV version of Smokey and the Bandit ("Bandit") instead of a Trans Am a black 1994 Dodge Stealth R/T was used.
Had a 3000gt vr4didn’t need to pull the motor to put on bigger turbos, plenty of aftermarket parts or them, mine made 486 all wheel on the stock bottom end and I took it to the strip all the time for around four years. Other than going through clutches never had a problem. Kind of over playing the reliability thing
No mention of the all wheel steering, active exhaust and active suspension back in 1991????? Or that the 3000gt vr4 had active aero? Most cars today don’t have all that technology. Disappointed. Also they got 320hp for the 1994 model year. Also the 3000gt and stealth are not DSM
I know this is satire, but sorry, those cars were state of the art when they came out. Styled by Dodge's Pacifica design studio, the car was indeed built by Mistu with various shared pieces. Nothing of the time had DOHC, combined with twin intercooled turbos, 4 wheel steering, and AWD with a 6 speed manual. Nothing! And your owner of this car is a complete wuss. Drive it like you stole it! At the time, they ran mid to low 14s in the quarter.. that ain't slow!
Hell, I’ve never seen one run slower than 13.80’s 100% bone stock....if you caught them turning 14.0-14.5 quarters, the clutch was probably toast or the car was in need of a serious driver mod....

I had over 172k miles on my 1991 Stealth R/T. A lot of little things broke, but the power train was solid. I did take good care of the car, but I had no problem driving it hard either. Still my favorite car. I hated giving it up.
You can talk crap out of this this car... but Dodge Stealth was best looking car in 90's.. even now when i see one it doesn't look dated and still looks awsome!
I fell for the Stealth TT's after seeing a black 93 used in the 1994 made-for-TV Bandit series which were loosely based on the Burt Reynold's character. Guess GM didn't want to donate any Trans Ams. They did a lot of fast driving, bootleg turns & skidouts (while clearly using the actual 6 cylinder exhaust sound with boost on the soundtrack which is very cool) but only jumped it once. Guess they wanted to keep the shows budget in check and not wreck a 40K car or two repeatedly

Ive had my 91 since 2007 with 84k miles and it has never needed more maintaining than my other cars and I do push it to its limits and I keep everything stock including its horribly dated stereo. I love driving it and it handles like a dream, especially consodering how heavy it is.
Not sure about that....on a 1/4 mile the Twin turbos actually where quicker but on track not. At least various best motoring tests showed that the track Performance of the gto wasnt as good as the nsx r32 gtr and FD rx7. Not sure about the supra.
In best Motoring sometime around 95-96, the VR4 in Japan was on par in the quarter with the R33 GT-R getting 12.8 seconds and barely beating it by 2 bumpers
Ugh, it was fun to listen to how each car was great in it's time period, or funny, or obnoxious. Now it seems as though something has changed and EVERYTHING sucks and nothing is good. Never liked the Stealth Boy Racer styling but must call BS on the DSM comment. The main product: Mitsubishi Eclipse/Dodge Laser were very good cars. In performance per dollar those- AWD Turbo versions were monsters at the time.
Engines on these were not fragile, the bottom ends hold up 500hp with the 1st gen cast crank, 2nd gen forged crank can handle 1000+, the 1st gen transfer case however was prone to breaking with hard launches, a problem they resolved with the 2nd gen. As with any performance car, following the suggested maintenance is key. Also not a DSM, its USDM, Made in Japan, not Normal Illinois, look it up.
I almost got one of these in high school, my dad and I were returning from Florida in his C5 Z06 cross country and came across a dealer having a hail damage special. This was just after Katrina and all of their cars had severe price cuts due to the hail. My dad knowing hoe much I loved dodges at the time pulled over and we test drove this exact model in dark green. I loved the car, I though it was incredibly fast for what it was and sure wanted to get it but my dad got cold feet thinking I’d hurt myself with all that power. I had nearly forgotten all about this part of the trip, thanks for taking me down memory lane.
I find it kinda funny, or more so ironic that Mr. Regular praises the ever loveing juice out of a simple Honda Prelude 4WS but fails to mention even a single time that the Stealth R/T was equipped with one aswell. Electronically controlled suspention, electronic sport exhaust, active 4 wheels steering and car alarm with remote control was just a few bits he didn´t mention at all. This car was groundbreaking for its era and time, so yea... it was rightfully expensive. It was better equipped and faster than some Ferraris and most Porsches of that time. Seems like he was biased quite a lot in this review.
I graduated from Lincoln tech in 1995 and got my first mechanic job in the fall of that year, just in time for the timing belts for theses things to get their first scheduled replacement. What an insane pain in the ass! The flat rate pay did not anywhere pay enough.

I used to watch this guy several years ago and forgot all about it until a few weeks ago... crawling through new material and comparing to old... all this stuff is just goofy to me now. Tired of the crass jokes primarily, and its just so wordy. And now comparing to the 3000GT, hard to take it seriously at all.
❤️Out of the 40+ cars I’ve owned, it’s one I wish I still had. Bought new, was a ‘94 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo with AWD & AWS for around $38k back then. Fastest I had it up to was 155mph; smoked Corvettes & some Porsche’s on the freeway back then. Drop it from 5th to 3rd going 80mph @ 4500rpm’s & you had 2 more gears to go!❤️
I love my 1991 Mitsubishi 3000 gt , it just reach 100,000 miles yesterday, the only thing that don't work is the radio but I don't care, the only modification I made was the tires, normal size on the front, a little bigger in the back , it looks more aerodynamic.
I like this vid but I don't think using inflation to compare $ to $ with a modern car is a good comparison like you did with the Kia Stinger. I think that you are underselling how far tech has changed in the almost 30yrs when you do that, not to mention how all tech is far cheaper and more reliable now than it has ever been, like the talk about vacuum lines those would never exist in a modern car let alone one worth $50k. I think showing options that are from the period like mentioning the Toyota's MR2 Turbo or the BMW Z1 makes more sense and for a better comparison.
It's a great comparison, shows how much cheaper cars are nowadays. People complain that cars are expensive now which is dumb.....I mean my wife's $26,000 Accord has leather, navigation, 180HP with 35+ MPG and will deploy side curtain air bags if it feels itself rolling over. All for 26k. That's nuts
I remember 5.0L magazine running an article in the mid 90s where they described the Stealth RT/VR-4 as "baroque" (not broke) and in the same blurb cautioned their readership to "think happy thoughts and avoid them in the rain." If they hooked, they would scoot.

I had a Stealth. Damn, I loved that car. It was an amazingly good car in the snow, which was unexpected, since I didn't have the all-wheel drive version. But even back in 1997 it was hard to find parts, and everything about the car was stupid expensive. Still, I'm tempted to go buy one again...
I love how little EVERYONE knows about the 3000gt/Stealth platform. This nor the 3000gt (same exact car) are result of the Diamond-Star Motor collaboration. These are straight Japanese cars. DSMs were all built in Normal Illinois.
You reviewed the worst possible year of the 3000gt/stealth platform. I had a 94tt and ran 450awhp for 60k miles over 5 years before the car and I parted ways at 185k miles. Pre 94 had cast crankshafts and a weak 18 spline transmission famous for failure. 94+ got forged crankshafts and a much stronger 6spd box. With the forged crank that engine really loved to rev.
For the time this was a very high tech and impressive car. In 1991 the Corvette had roughly 50 more horsepower with close to double the displacement and 2 more cylinders. You had to pay $65K to go to a ZR1 if you wanted to go fast. The quality of materials and durability was way superior with Mitsubishi. The weak point on these cars was the premature failure of valve stem seals and oil burning. Otherwise, they were solid. Parts have been drying up for a long time. This guy did a great job of preserving this one. The factory seats in that condition are stunning.
Wtf? Engine not fragile... It's lack of maintenance and idiots would jack them up by oil pan and ruin them.. so annoying when they are Soo off... They aren't fragile lol... The only thing I agree on this review is that it was a bit expensive. Dodge Stealth 3000GT VR4 would reach 40-50K+ based on the options also they had a Spyder model.

May not be the best car of the early 90s, but damn I still think these look great! Was never sold on the spoiler, but the little tweaks to the bumpers that Dodge made really make these look awesome, and to my eye look better than the 3000GT Was always overshadowed by the Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, and even the 3000GT itself, so the Stealth was always like the underdog to me And I remember the one guy in Walker Texas Ranger had one... Dolby digital was the surround sound format that replaced prologic and prologic II

Fun fact. 1996 Toyota Supra Turbo was $50,400. That is $80,950.30 in 2018 money.

I've been using a 1992 VR4 as my primary driver for the last four years and it has been a great car. I drive it around 400 miles a week.
The cars a a Lot more reliable than RCR makes it seem. My dad has a 94 vr-4 and the only thing that went wrong is the crank sensor. Also the coolant was leaking but that was cause it’s old
Edit: the coolant leak was just the overflow tank
Is it still reliable?
Then you'd love the updated Mitsubishi version review.

My 2007 Fiat Punto has an unlabeled header on the back of the head unit that is apparently an Aux in, but it sounds like dirt... So I put a new head unit in. I lost my steering wheel controls, gained podcasts and music other than that provided by the ABC.

The owner is one of the guys who calls it baby and doesn’t trust anyone with it. Like an ugly rich 40 year old with a 20 something girlfriend.

Arthur Gutenbrunner all oh these features were mentioned to him...
Last time I was this Early, well it's 1 AM, so yeah it's early.
420 over here on the east coast hehehehe
PST too
@couchfort well it was 1 AM I forgot what I was gonna say.
It was tired and I was late.
Beaudoin Motorsports go to sleep old man.
@@CANControlGRAFFITI Old man? *OLD MAN??* Haha I'm 21
I graduated from Lincoln tech in 1995 and got my first mechanic job in the fall of that year, just in time for the timing belts for theses things to get their first scheduled replacement.
What an insane pain in the ass!
The flat rate pay did not anywhere pay enough.
Nubyrc lml that's funny how that worked out
I've read many times over the years that Stealths/3000Gts pop their timing belts at 60K on the dot
Not a dsm line, this was built in Japan along with 3000gt. The eclipse, talon, and laser where Dsm diamond star motors. At time these where realible for 90s. I owned two no issue until 174000miles. They do 14.0 at 100mph. Competition to 300zx tt, Supra turbo, and rx7 turbo. Fit at time and high tech at time.
One of the sweetest cars of the 90s. A neighbor has a red one, gave never seen it one the road, But the car is mint!
crazy how the 95 is the best car ever but the 91 is a shitbox lmao
He's selling that one and going to make bank. Thats why.
Chrysler back then vs now. Marty: we have to go back. Me: Lee, we need you again
I feel like this configuration is more respected as the 3000GT VR4.
But HOLY. FRICKING. GOD. This car is beautiful en face. Every time it looks at me with its killer whale face, I'm just shivering.
Loving the intro/outro music being an extended stupid pun. :P
True
WELL SAID
It's a great comparison, shows how much cheaper cars are nowadays.
People complain that cars are expensive now which is dumb.....I mean my wife's $26,000 Accord has leather, navigation, 180HP with 35+ MPG and will deploy side curtain air bags if it feels itself rolling over.
All for 26k. That's nuts
Cars maybe cheaper it's the earning the money that has gone down making them closer
True! I heard stories about how 300ZX's came with phones in the passenger side near the glovebox..
*_now tell me of a car whom did that nowadays?_*
I remember 5.0L magazine running an article in the mid 90s where they described the Stealth RT/VR-4 as "baroque" (not broke) and in the same blurb cautioned their readership to "think happy thoughts and avoid them in the rain." If they hooked, they would scoot.
Put a clutch in one a while ago. Ran ok just didn't have the power I thought it should. Come to find out the front exhaust cam was two teeth off. New timing set and water pump. Totally different car owner was more than happy.
I love these cars from Mitsubishi and Chrysler
Jonathan Alonso TWIN TURBROS
*Mitsubishi, chrysler didn't do shit other than slap its shitty badge.
They past boundrys that cars didn't want to pass at the time. I love the 3kgt it was a very comfortable car. With corvette looks
@@jonathanalonso7502 honestly mitsubishi was such a fun car company back in the 80s and 90s with the eclipse,evo,3000gt,colt,starion, galant, mirage, etc. I lowkey want them to come back to doing that again.
@@Abel-Alvarez your not the only one. I wish they would bring back the 3kgt and the right eclipse
Jason Valerio I wish he would have beat on it a lil in video
@@tylercouture216 yeah that's bs. They didn't drive it anyway he drove other cars. The owner probably scared him too much to open up. My car just has cat delete and it's so fun to drive they enjoy 3,500-5,500 rpm.
Jason Valerio oh you have 1
@@tylercouture216 yeah check out my other comment here. I am 29 but I know a ton about this cars history. I can't forward it as I am mobile.
Jason Valerio going to have to take your word for it as its wayyyyy to many comments lml , not even being a dick
Yo just realized this was filmed down the street from my house lol
May not be the best car of the early 90s, but damn I still think these look great!
Was never sold on the spoiler, but the little tweaks to the bumpers that Dodge made really make these look awesome, and to my eye look better than the 3000GT
Was always overshadowed by the Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, and even the 3000GT itself, so the Stealth was always like the underdog to me
And I remember the one guy in Walker Texas Ranger had one...
(Ok, now I feel old lmao)
In later seasons the Travette character had a white 95. Not sure if it was the turbo one
I had an NA R/T a few years ago. I did not drive it like it was fragile, and it was an absolute blast. Then, once I decided to sell it after starting college, my dad let some asshole kid test drive it alone and he broke it. I basically gave that car away so that it didn't end up in a junkyard. I had some great times with that car.
Fragile? Maybe now but back in the day I saw people beating the crap out of these things in street drags. They got the job done!
